Grassing the Terracrete™ blocks adds to their ability to acts a green eco-surface in a sponge city design.

Altus Eitner, Streets & Stormwater / Project Planning & Management, Mossel Bay Municipality, South Africa, commends the block: “Thanks to large holes and a unique interlock the blocks are fully permeable and plantable, which adds to their ability to fully integrate with any environment they are introduced to.

“The roots of the plants anchor the blocks and help to strengthen them, especially against floods. The holes also allow worms and bugs to pass through the block without sterilizing (smothering) the area. Added to this, maintenance of the installations is easy, as the blocks provide a stable platform for the mowing of the grass if needed.”

Versatile step block creates safe space for play!

https://www.terraforce.com/product-category/4x4-step-block/

In July 2018, Eikstad Primary School, Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa, decided to transform a bland, paved space into a place for play for their students.

As the area sloped upwards considerably, the school needed to find a way to mitigate the possibility of injury by adding some low steps to allow students safe and easy access to the playground equipment.

SP van Blerk, Director, Decorton Retaininig Walls, says he suggested the Terraforce® 4x4 Step block™ by Terraforce: “it offers a rounded/bullnose front to form softer steps and terraces. As added benefit, the completed steps also look great once installed.”

Van Blerk adds that the locally developed product has become very popular at public recreational or educational facilities: “it is often more affordable than other solutions out there. Also, the blocks are durable, don’t burn and can be readily repaired or recycled!”

The installation was completed in August 2018 and no major challenges were encountered. In addition to a concrete foundation underneath each row of steps, the blocks were all concrete filled for extra stability. Says van Blerk: “We avoided cutting the blocks as much as possible, rather making use of spacings between the blocks to form the rounded lines.”

Van Blerk is very happy with the result: “Instead of hard concrete paving, the space now features comfortable steps and seating, modern play equipment and was finished off superbly with Easygrass for added safety for the children. The finished project really stands out!”

Best Terraforce® Project of the Year, 2022!

In 2021 Terraforce started the “Best Terraforce Project of the Year” Awards to recognise the excellent workmanship and manufacturing standards of our licensed partners, installers and clients, highlighting the one that impressed us the most.

2022 winner, Dubai Silicon Oasis, United Arab Emirates

These long, up to six-meter high Terraforce L16 rock face retaining walls were skilfully installed at Dubai Silicon Oasis in Dubai by Al Aamal Construction. The retaining walls were necessary due to the substantial differences in levels on site, and to provide access to a leisure area on ground level, with access stairs and ramps leading to the residences at top level.

Says Sinan Awad, Al Aamal Construction: “The site consists of set-back and vertical walls, as well as 90-degree corners that were achieved by carefully cutting the Terraforce L16 rock face blocks. For additional stability the blocks were concrete filled, reinforced with rebar and we used double block rows with the rock face finish facing outwards either side for some of the vertical walls adjoining the two grand staircases and ramps. Where the walls joined other structures, dowels were used to secure the connections. In total, 41100 Terraforce L16 and 2000 Terraforce 4x4 Step blocks were installed on site.”

Overall, the fantastic multi-level corner details, inset planter boxes, ramps with rails and grand 4x4 Step block staircases make a notable visual statement and create effective breaks in what could have been a sheer and vast, grey surface otherwise.

What we really want to bring across are the endless possibilities to environmentally engineer beautiful structures,” says Holger head and founder, Terraforce®.

This was the motivation for the manufacturer’s latest initiative – the Terraforce Book of Ideas – which showcases creative ways to install aesthetically appealing structures ranging from beach erosion works to culverts and bridges, staircases, pedestrian ramps, sports ground seating and amphitheatres.

“The key ingredient is that the Book of Ideas is highly visual and will appeal to technical and non-technical readers alike looking for inspiration,” Holger explains.

The insights shared feature South African, as well as international projects from diverse countries that include Australia, Canada, Egypt, Eswatini, Ghana, India, Lesotho, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Spain, the UAE and UK.

Colourful steps with Terraforce®

Installed by Coastal Home Improvements

Need a neat and easy to install staircase? The Terraforce 4×4™ Step block, a light, dry-stack concrete unit is ideally suited for efficient and economical steps, either in combination with the Terraforce L range blocks or for free standing staircases.

General guidelines

The step can be as wide as you wish; four blocks in a row will result in a flight 800 mm wide. With an overlap of 50 mm, a single block tread of 350 mm and a riser of 150 mm is obtained, although a double row will work well in a gentle slope and where the steps curve. After positioning the blocks, push mortar into the hollow of each block, but only if the blocks are supplied without the internal T-bar, dependent on the manufacturer.

Compact the soil behind each step and ensure that the ground is absolutely level before you start laying the next row of blocks. In some instances, it may be advisable to place a bedding layer of stabilised sand below the blocks (5% cement added).

Berg River Dam Terraforce® 4x4 Step block seating

This spectacular seating arrangement was initiated by Hans Roux of Grinaker-LTA, Group Five, WBHO and Western Cape Empowerment Contractors (WCEC). Together they form the Berg River Project Joint Venture (BRPJV) that was awarded the R550 million contract for the construction of the dam.

Designed by Dassenberg Retaining Systems , it is situated on the eastern bank of the Berg River Dam which captures water in the upper reaches of the Berg River and will augment the supply of water to the City of Cape Town by 18 percent. Hugo Pienaar, quantity surveyor for Dassenberg, says that the seating arena will provide visitors with a comfortable viewing platform to sit and admire the panoramic view of surrounding area and the vast expanse of water.

In terms of landscaping, the downstream face of the dam wall, visible from the main road into Franschhoek, has been re-vegetated with indigenous flora. This ensures that the dam and associated structures do not contrast with the surrounding landscape.

Pienaar says that this is the reason the Terraforce® 4x4 Step Block was chosen for construction of the seating arena: “A lot of money was spent rehabilitating the area, with new topsoil being placed and fynbos planted.

"Everything was very environmentally conscious, seeing that the Berg River Dam is the first dam in South Africa to be designed, constructed, and operated in strict accordance with the guidelines of the United Nations World Commission on Dams. When you see how the blocks and pavers blend in with the surrounding landscape, you can easily see that no other product would have been viable, especially one that is so versatile and durable.”

Do you have a commercial project that needs retaining? With the Terraforce® retaining block system, it is possible to create the building space you need 😊

The optional vertical interlock the system allows for seamless variations of wall inclination from 90 to 35 degrees, with or without geofabric. Convex and concave corners and curves allow complex designs to suit most site conditions. The system also reduces evaporation and improves drainage for effective backfill compaction, while texture or plant growth deters graffiti. Need we say more?

Eco-surfaces lead the way in Australia since 2007 💪💪💪

The Geraldton Boat Lifters in W. Australia are currently in the process of expanding the Boat Lifter Maintenance and Storage Area. We love a happy customer who keeps coming back for more Terracrete™ blocks.

The blocks for this application are Elasto Plastic reinforced and were installed on a specifically designed sub-base structure so that heavy loads could be carried. In addition, the blocks can easily be lifted to clear oil and other spillages to protect this ecologically sensitive site.
