June Mood || Design Is In The Details

You’ll hear this expression often from designers. A take on Charles Eames famous quote “The details are not the details. They make the design”.

He is not wrong. Sometimes the details are obvious and other times they are subtle or hidden. We talk a lot about the details around here. Spotlighting the beauty in the day-to-day is one of the most enjoyable aspects of what I do. Each element, no matter how small, plays a pivotal role in crafting a space that is not only visually stunning but also deeply personal.

In the journey of designing our homes, it’s easy to overlook the beauty of those small, utilitarian features that bring a space together. Each home has those hardworking items that may be humble in size, but brilliant in ex*****on, that bring function and form to every day life.

If you think about it like this, everything is an experience in your home - so why not make it the best that you can? Good design makes us feel better, live better. Flowers in your kitchen, for example, makes you feel happy. But if you’re anything like me, so does a good dimmer switch. Just being able to lower the lights at the end of the day and create a different evening mood is something so simple, yet so deeply satisfying.

This month we’re going to focus on those details. Those little certain somethings that you might not be able to instantly put your finger on. Those seemingly small design details that we love to use, and a few that we’re hanging onto and desperate to use, all of which work towards elevating the everyday.

Just as your favourite gold bracelet can make an outfit, the right design details can add the finishing touch that pulls a home together.

Thank you for following along. Xx

When it comes to sourcing affordable prints and posters, there is nothing better than turning to your kids owns creations. While the drawing and vibrancy of the work may not be suited to all spaces in your home, we know that the right selection of pieces adds so much personality and that personal touch to your home.

Not only that, but your kids will simply love to see their creations framed and displayed on the walls of your home. My girls could not believe it when I hung their pictures on the walls of our passage. They were so proud of themselves and love to show visitors their work.

Given that works of art can cost hundreds of thousands rands, the average person who wants to brighten up their home may well despair that they’ll never be able to find anything affordable. We know that there is never a project that doesn’t require good quality and interesting art pieces, but we realise that not everyone’s budget can stretch very far.

However these days more and more there are sources of affordable posters and prints that will still bring personality and style to your home - without breaking the bank. Along with availability comes with knowing where to look and how to match the different styles to your home. Creating art requires a lot of time and effort, making art an investment.

That being said, good quality affordable artwork is out there, and we’ve found some amazing options from our favourite locals suppliers for you. If you have an empty space, here’s your chance to fill it.

Does Your Bedroom Need Art?

When it comes to the interiors of your home, it can be easy to get swept up in the notion that every nook and cranny needs to be adorned with canvases or prints. However let’s pause for a moment and consider the essence of a bedroom. It’s a sanctuary, a haven of rest and rejuvenation. In this restorative space, simplicity can often be more conducive to tranquility than a cluttered cacophony of artwork clamouring for attention.

The absence of artwork can create a sense of openness and airiness within a bedroom, fostering a feeling of freedom and relaxation. Consider the freedom that comes with a blank canvas. Without the constraints of predetermined artwork dictating the room’s aesthetic, you’re free to experiment with different design elements and accents.

In my own bedroom I’ve also gone the route of not having artwork on the walls. With the room being purposefully designed to be dark, the goal is to let you feel enveloped by the wall colour, which creates a calming effect (perfect for my insomniac of a housemate). Instead I brought in detail through the feature wall light, and the wall mirror, which was a purposeful addition to break up the big wall.

And let’s not forget, art can be expensive, it’s very personal and it sets the tone for a space immediately. The absence of artwork opens up a world of possibilities for personal expression and creativity.

If you’re planning on adding some floral decor to your home this season, can we tempt you to consider dried flowers?

Watching your favourite blooms slowly wither away is arguably the worst part about decorating with live plants. It’s no secret that dried flowers have a bad rap. If I think about dried flowers from my child hood, I think about a bowl of potpourri leaves or a small vase of bunny ears. For a long time these arrangements had a distinctly dated vibe.

Fresh flowers undoubtedly bring a burst of vitality and fragrance to any room - and they are one my greatest luxurious in life. I love a house filled with beautiful blooms. The choice between dried and fresh flowers often boils down to more than just aesthetics; it’s a decision that encompasses practicality, longevity, the desired ambiance of a space - and the reality of one’s budget. Because fresh flowers are expenny!

On the other hand, dried flowers offer a compelling alternative that appeals to both the senses and sensibilities of interior design enthusiasts. There is no denying dried flowers are huge right now - and for good reason.

Dried flowers offer longevity that fresh blooms simply cannot match. They require minimal maintenance, retaining their elegance without the need for watering or sunlight. This makes them an excellent option for spaces where access to natural light may be limited, such as high shelves and bathrooms. One of the most enchanting aspects of dried flowers is their versatility. They seamlessly complement a myriad of design styles, from the quaint charm of cottagecore to the sleek sophistication of modern minimalism. Their muted tones and organic textures add a touch of rustic charm and sophistication to any setting.

While we’re on the topic, I’m sure many of us have an abundance of fresh blooms following mother’s day. If you’re looking to DIY your own dried flowers, then we have five easy steps for you to follow on the blog today.

With the changing season upon it’s a good time to start turning our attention indoors, as we ready our homes for the cooler weather.

What does it really mean to get your home ready for the winter season? It’s not like we are going to renovate our homes or buy all new furniture with the change of every season, so what can we really do to mix things up and make our homes feel warmer and more inviting - without spending a small fortune?!

The key areas we turn our attention to are:
- lighting (including candles)
- changing up your textiles
- warming up your bedroom
- adding texture through rugs
- bringing the outdoors in

While we strongly advocate that your home stays true to itself in all seasons, join us on the blog as we talk you through these tried and tested ways to make your home cosy and inviting as the darker, colder days of winter approach.

As I start May one week late, I have given myself a clear mantra for the remainder of this month…. Do Less!

It’s not unknown for me to try to do all the things. But let’s be honest - the reality of doing too many things all the time, is that you end up doing none of them well. If you can relate, then you’re probably also left feeling burned out and tired.

I love the concept of “minimum effective dose.” Traditionally used in pharmacology, it describes the smallest dose that will produce the desired outcome. When it comes to our lives, it’s the basics that will make the biggest difference in how we feel: meals cooked at home, getting sunshine, taking a walk, spending time with people we love and getting enough sleep. If you can build those five things into your daily routine, you’re good.

As I spend my time recalibrating this month, I’m also renewing my focus on all things at home. Not since early March have I spent much time at home, being away for weekends on end, and I am SO looking forward to the opportunity to spend time in my own space.

I’m a sucker for the change of seasons and winter is no exception. I love turning my attention indoors and thinking about how I can make our spaces cosier for the cooler months ahead.

While I always strongly advocate that your home stays true to itself in all seasons, there are tried and tested ways to make your home cosy and inviting as the darker, cold’s approach. This month (as I spend more time at home doing less), we’re going to share our favourite design ideas to help you welcome winter into your home this season.

Thanks as always for following along Xx

Round rugs have long held a place of prominence in the realm of interior design, and it’s not hard to see why they continue to captivate us. The continuous curve of these circular marvels and lack of angles lend a free-flowing style to a room.

At the heart of our affection for round rugs lies their innate ability to soften the angular edges of a room, creating a sense of flow and cohesion. Whether nestled beneath a cozy reading nook or anchoring a bustling dining area, their symmetrical shape fosters a sense of balance and unity, inviting us to linger a little longer in their embrace.

Whether you’re seeking to elevate a room’s ambiance or simply craving a touch of cozy elegance, consider the transformative power of a round rug—it’s sure to leave you circling back for more. 😉

An Ode To The Dining Room

Ah, the dining room – a cherished enclave within the home where sustenance meets socialisation, and memories are dished out alongside delectable meals. Its allure lies not only in its practical function but also in the intangible sense of warmth and conviviality it exudes.

In the ever-evolving landscape of home design, the once-revered dining room finds itself continuously undergoing subtle yet significant transformations. Once deemed a staple of domestic architecture, its importance now shifts, mirroring the evolving lifestyle and preferences of contemporary homeowners.

Moreover, the advent of casual dining options, such as breakfast nooks and kitchen islands, has reshaped the way families approach mealtime. The emphasis shifts from formal sit-down dinners to more casual and spontaneous gatherings, where flexibility and convenience take precedence over rigid dining rituals.

Yet, despite these shifts, the dining room retains its inherent significance as a hub for social interaction and connection. While its formal usage may diminish, its role as a gathering space persists, albeit in a more relaxed and informal manner. Whether hosting intimate dinner parties or impromptu brunches, the dining room continues to foster meaningful connections and shared experiences among family and friends.

In a fast-paced world fraught with distractions, it offers a respite – a space where we can pause, reconnect, and savour the simple joys of shared company. In the embrace of its walls, we find nourishment not only for the body but also for the soul, reaffirming the timeless adage that the heart of the home truly resides in its dining room

Spread over two levels, this generous family home draws from both midcentury and modernist stylings, using a careful selection of materials to define the space. She is such a beauty, and lesson in design restraint that is worth noting.

Now obviously there was a generous budget when it came to putting this house together, but to me this house is an excellent example of how with careful planning you can create a very, very similar look for a lot less.

I find this to be especially true in spaces with clean lines and a minimalist approach, where the architectural details are well thought out and carefully planned.

Creating a recessed pelmut spacing in your new ceiling is a perfect example on how to get the luxe look for less. With curtain rails hidden and a ceiling to floor drop, you have already given your home an upgrade. With good off-the-shelf affordable sheers and curtains available, you’ve got yourself a

April 2024 | Make The Best Of Your Budget

There’s nothing like some downtime for the opportunity to take stock of life and reflect on what truly fulfils you. All it takes is a few days out of the office - and since my office is in my home, this means that I do need to actively leave the house and go away for a mini break to truly get that out of office feeling going on.

Home is our shared starting point, our common ground, where those of us lucky enough to have a roof over heads can dream about our futures, nourish our bodies and connect with loved ones. Inevitably as you let your mind wander you will probably spend time considering the changes you are looking to make to your home.

When it comes to your home and interior design, one of the biggest myths we hear again and again is that good looking design has to cost a fortune. We have said this before - interior design isn’t always about going from nothing to something incredible.

We know that whether you are consciously making over a space in your home, or if you are embarking on a larger renovation project, budgets are always stretched thin - regardless of their size.

If you have been following along with us for a while, then you will know that at The home Studio we are all about making interior design affordable and approachable, and hand-in-hand with that comes implementing cost-effective interior design solutions into our projects. We believe that it is totally possible to achieve those “designed” interior styles and looks that you see on Instagram, Pinterest and many of your favourite design magazines, without breaking your budget.

This month on the blog we’ll be sharing our best cost saving design tips and budget design inspiration, our favourite mix of High and Low, all the while focussing on how to make your budget work for you.

March Makeover Month

The alliteration gets us every year. Although it seems wrong to call just one month of the year makeover month, when every minute of every (working) day of every month we are focussed on creating beautiful spaces for our clients.

We know that each home is unique and brings its own characteristics to the design tables. We consider this month a reminder to ourselves that the design of a home is a journey, not a sprint. More importability, the design of your home should be an act of personal expression.

Small changes can have a big impact on your space and don’t have to cost an arm and a leg. I love it when I come across a small-budget renovation because a lot of people think to have a million dollar “look” the renovations need to cost that much and it’s just not true. The design is in the details.

We know the design process and all the choices presented to you and all the decisions that need to be made is not easy. Last year I made around 67,398 design decisions. At times like that, interior designers are good to have on board.

Just remember, you don’t have to go from nothing to something incredible for the process to be worthwhile. Most of the time it’s just about enhancing the space you already have.

This month we are celebrating all our makeovers. We’re here to help you through every stage of your renovation, big or small: The nitty-gritty planning, the “what have I done?” moments, and the photo-ready finish - Insta worthy or not.

Setting your dinner table with beautiful basics should be a reminder that the objects we choose to surround ourselves with can not only be timeless and long-lasting, but also quietly uplifting.

At the same time, there is nothing quite like that little adrenaline spoke you get after seeing something real cool on Instagram - only to realise it is also a budget friendly .

Realising that you can afford a gorgeous dinner set without breaking the bank gives me all the adult feels. And since we’re right in the middle of our summer entertaining seasons, there’s no better time to refresh your tabletop collection with affordable dinnerware.

Now you can enjoy the anticipation of sharing a home cooked meal surrounded by friends in the comfort of your home. It’s the little things like that that make life so beautiful.

Three colour ways, four combinations - all of which will bring something special to your table setting.

Tablescaping is like designing an interior within an interior – creating a table-top world with its own flourishes and distinct personality. And with the right set of tableware, linen and finishing touches at the ready, the possibilities are endless.

When it comes to elevating your tablescaping skills, start by selecting a theme or concept that you work from. Whether it’s rustic chic, minimalist elegance, or vibrant bohemian, a cohesive theme guides your design choices. Draw inspiration from seasonal elements, cultural motifs, or personal interests to infuse character into your table setting.

Consider these three tablescape styles firm favourites.

Nine To Know | The Drinks Trolley

When you are full entertainment mode, it is really handy to have a drinks easily accessible for guests. Otherwise you end up feeling like you are never part of the conversation, always popping away to help top up drinks. A drinks trolley offers guests the opportunity to easily help themselves, and is also a great way to keep plenty of water on hand, ensuring that everyone stays hydrated during those steaming summer days.

The concept of the drinks trolley works perfectly well both indoors and out, and could be considered as a necessary feature in an entertainers home. This is especially relevant in smaller spaces or those without lots of counter space, bringing the bar to wherever you may need it. We love it pool side!

When it comes to styling your drinks trolley (or bar cart), remember that it is not just about functionality - it is also an opportunity to showcase a few favourite objects and elevate the aesthetics of your space. We’ve collated out favourite drinks trolleys, drawing on a number of different styles, ready to impress your guests and have you hosting in style.

These balmy summer nights are the perfect opportunity to gather friends and family together for a meal, while weekend brunches are a personal favourite.

When considering a dining table and chairs for your outdoor space, it is important to think about scale, shape and usage – just like you would for inside your home.

Obviously, the smaller the space the smaller the pieces. Shape is also important as it affects the flow in and around the dining area. Round tables are ideal for corner nooks and circulation areas, as they create more of a sense of ‘flow’. If you need to push your table against a wall then square or rectangular tables are best.

With this in mind, we have rounded up combination of then outdoor dining tables and chairs, which can easily be mixed and matched depending on your own personal taste and style.

The weather in Cape Town these last few days is everything that I live for! I simply love evenings where I can sit outside and watch the mountain change as the sun sets behind it.

In the office we’re getting lots of requests on outdoor spaces, so we figured that the good weather has been motivating many of you to tackle your list of outdoor updates.

We understand these things take time (and money), as well as a lot of thoughtful consideration. Decision paralysis is real as people try to consider whether they will still like choices they make now in 1, 2 or even 5 years time. While I do believe that an outdoor setting is a great place to have some fun and bring in colour and pattern, given the cost of furnishing an outdoor space it’s wise to create for yourself a timeless and neutral base that you can easily accessorise and update over the years.

Nothing says “absolutely classic” quite like a wood and white base. From here you can add those hot pink scatter cushions, or bring in the blue stripe umbrella you have been eyeing out. It is easy to let your let your inner maximalist out and completely alter the look of the space with the right foundation.

With this in mind, we’ve pulled together the ideal selection of base pieces, that you can work from and style to suit your own personal taste.

Kitchen Design Favourites 2024

We already know that the kitchen is one of the most important spaces in our home. So naturally we pay attention when we see shifts in design preferences in the kitchen.

We’re a bit reluctant to call them trends, when we’ve seen the rise in some of these elements over the last few years. Many have also come about as a result of functional lifestyle changes, or a new perspective on how we nurture connections with family and friends.

Favourites include the Breakfast Nook, Warm, Muted Colours, Layered, Minimal Lighting, Outdoor Kitchens, and a Connection to Nature, and most of all an Appliance Hatch and Wet Bar!

For many people, simply ‘enjoying their life’ has become a driving force behind prioritising the design of their homes. As part of the ongoing rise in upgrading this process, these are kitchen elements that are being requested more and more during the design process - and we love them!
