The ethos behind the new guest lodge in Shikwaru Eco Estate is living in equal partnership and harmony with nature.

As an overarching metaphor, the building echoes a humble wildlife hide, where its understated façade of natural materials belies an interior which opens up to nature on its doorstep.

Humans, antelope, fauna and birdlife exist in happy symbiosis. From clever window design that allows for an unobtrusive gaze upon surrounding wildlife, to open en-suite showers overlooking the privacy of a tree canopy, to a panopticon roof balcony – every ecological plain is accessible to the very welcomed guests of the lodge.

This weekend I had the privilege of joining in the celebration launch of the recently completed Leadership Traning Facility for . It was truly special and deeply satisfying to experience the building being successfully occupied by more than 30 friends, family and donors of this incredibly impactful organisation. Our renovations are complete. There is something quite special about transforming an unused and forgotten space into something useful. The former ceiling void has been transmuted into a warm and light bedroom loft - high above the sounds of traffic, and closer to the clouds that brush Paarl rock. The imported Velux skylights are double-glazed to make sure the room remains temperate with the golden West-facing sunsets. The skylights also pivot to allow warm air to circulate and escape, thus offering seasonal benefits. The rustic portal windows offer charming peephole views of the mesmerising Cape Winelands. We could not be happier with the outcome made possible with our main contractor: Henton Homes (072 270 2943)

Shikwaru Chapel is almost complete. The front facade of the chapel is a modern nod to the stained glass window panels of churches of bygone eras. The glasswork and fold-away doors allow for a near-panoramic view of the watering hole and bushveld, respectively, on either side of the structure. The deck overlooks the sun setting across the water – facilitating a seamless transition between the interior and external spaces.

Guests are able to spill out from the ceremony into celebrations. Wood, stone, and glass are the primary textures that continue the dialogue with nature that the clients were after in their request for a pavilion-style design. As the sun moves across the sky, the slatted louvers set the stage for a playful dalliance between light and shadow as the heartfelt exchange of vows happens within.

Boschenmeer Country Estate Residents Forum

With a limited footprint and a pressing need for more space, it made complete sense to maximize on the double-volume space in our beautiful Boschenmeer townhouse and build a loft! In a matter of weeks, the new suspended timber floor and reinforced trusses transformed the dusty ceiling void into a sun-drenched garret. Light streams through the skylights - allowing for ample views of Taal Monument and Paarl Rock. Once the carpets are in and the built-in cupboards and bookcases have been installed, we will move into our new master bedroom.

Concept design for a new residence for Swedish architect & client who is the principal designer on this project. Privacy and simplicity are key for the owner of this beautiful Scarborough holiday cabin. The site falls along a sharp South slope with exhilarating views overlooking the tiny coastal village of Scarborough, and the wild Atlantic sea. The simple yet elegant design fosters hybrid functionality: the bottom floor can be accessed at street–level and serves as an outdoor yoga studio and workspace, while the upper storey holds the quaint living and dining area. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms, separated by an open-plan kitchen and lounge and dining area. Sliding doors open up to a balcony overlooking the private garden and ocean views.

First floor brickwork progressing nicely. It was great to stand on the first storey and experience the stunning 360 views over the Limpopo bush.

Concept design for a new house in Suiderstrand. The site has stunning southern views of the ragged southern-most coastline of Africa, together with the prevailing South Eastern wind. The design offers protected views for the upstairs bedrooms with the option of opening up the entire downstairs living space for when the conditions are favourable. When the wind is pumping the living area can be closed off to the south and open up to the north enjoying the vast and wild fynbos of the Cape Agulhas.
