With few job opportunities available locally, we are mindful of ensuring that KHULA Education's work to support youth with further education and training does not lead to an exodus from local communities. It’s a careful balancing act of providing skills that are locally relevant and therefore give young people the choice to stay in their communities, alongside qualifications that may take them to the big cities.

Providing more local employment options doesn't just have economic benefits, it also reduces the all too common issue of families being split apart when parents have no choice but to move to big cities in search of work, leaving their children in the care of extended family.

Schools, hotels and other facilities everywhere will always need staff with expertise in hygiene and industrial cleaning, so we’re delighted to be launching a new paid learnership programme with Human Capital Investments aimed at upskilling and providing more jobs for young women in a vocation that gives them greater choice about where and when they work, as well as offering entrepreneurship potential.

All recent graduates of our Life Skills & Job Readiness training, these ten ladies are now embarking on the year-long accredited Hygiene & Cleaning learnership, providing them with a formal qualification which will help them access employment opportunities, wherever those might be.

We have big ambitions to expand our vocational training offerings for rural young people, so stay tuned!
