Simple tips to set yourself up for success with your exercise-based New Year's resolutions...
π€ Find Your Why. Many people will base their New Year's resolutions on losing weight by exercising more. However, losing weight is proven to be an unsuccessful motivating factor to do exercise and it often results in low levels of enjoyment. Try finding a more motivating factor to exercise, such as improved fitness, lower levels of stress or better mental health.
β
Set Smart Goals. Consider short- and long-term goals that are achievable, measurable and have an end time (e.g. within 3 months). Keeping track of your progress is also a great way to stay on track.
πΆFind Exercise You Enjoy. Forcing yourself to participate in activities you don't like is a sure-fire way to lose your motivation to exercise. Remember there are hundreds of ways to be physically active! If you're feeling lost about what exercises are best for you, chat to your local Accredited Exercise Physiologist.
π΄ Exercise with a Friend. Research has shown that exercising with another person can help you stick with it - it can make exercise more enjoyable and help keep you accountable.
π Make a Plan. Creating a plan or schedule of your workouts, specifically when, where and how your exercise will be done helps to form exercise habits. Scheduling in time to exercise and making it a priority will help you reach your goals and stay on track.
