Two of our staff, Amanda and Nancy were privileged to attend the Professional Minds - Education Revolution conference yesterday.
Surrounded by educational colleagues, therapists, leaders in virtual education, and Dr Kathie Nunley, a renowned international specialist. Topics covered:
▪️education has to change. The how, what, where, when, and how of education needs a major overhaul
▪️the state of education in South Africa and what is happening in government right now to address the huge gap between the various educational bodies
And finally
▪️the relationship between the brain and the gut. What we eat has a large impact on the health of our neurons and pathway.
The exhibitors displayed new products available to teachers and therapists. Various specialist schools gave a glimpse into their facilities.

The relevance for our ECD sector, was an acknowledgement as to the importance of getting the foundations right from this early stage and the need for government to give more importance and support to ECD centres .
Topics covered that we found relevant to the little lives we teach, by Dr Kathie Nunley was the HUGE importance placed on Sleep! “Learning happens at night, the processing, neuron firing and neuron growing all happens in rest”.
The second was the importance placed on gut- brain health and the latest finding in terms of the microbiomes produced in the gut by what we eat, and how they produce so many of the bacteria needed for the release of neurotransmitters in the brain which are needed for memory mood, learning and cognitive function . Interestingly chemicals (neurotransmitters), like serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine are produced primarily by the gut bacteria . So “play to learn” and “eat to learn” very important .

A brilliant and busy day, we came away from the conference with renewed hope for how we can make a difference.
