to ensure a much more gratifying experience for visitors. About 20 000 people attended last year’s event that takes place at the Horse Racing Track in the northern KZN town of Dundee. The race is hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport and Recreation in conjunction with the Umzinyathi District and Endumeni local municipalities. This event has become one of the main attractions in the Province’s calendar of events and is a major driver of tourism in northern KwaZulu-Natal. Unlike the other horse racing events like the popular Durban July, the Dundee July traditional horse riding is unique in that the jockeys and racing horses are drawn among ordinary villagers from all over the province. The positive growth of the race has attracted participants from other provinces like Mpumalanga and the Free State as well as Lesotho. The event also affords aspiring fashion designers a platform to showcase their creations, and offers a boom period for the local hospitality industry. It ends with a musical spectacle featuring top musicians and local acts. More details are expected to be announced by the MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha as the event draws closer.
