In French, the present tense has several irregular verbs that do not follow the standard conjugation patterns, adding a touch of complexity to the language. Common examples include ĂȘtre (to be), avoir (to have), aller (to go), and faire (to do/make). Each of these verbs has unique conjugations in the present tense, such as je suis, tu es, il est for ĂȘtre; j’ai, tu as, il a for avoir; and so forth.

Did you know that these irregular verbs often reflect older, traditional patterns?

What do you think of this concept: "La poesia non Ăš di chi la scrive ma di chi le serve" or "Poetry is not of the one who writes it but of the one who needs it."

Perhaps this perspective is that the importance of literature should focus on the needs and experiences of the audience. It implies that poetry gains its meaning and relevance from how it is received and utilised by others. This highly subjective topic is one that we would love to get your opinion on.

SC Language Solutions is here to take your Italian language and cultural knowledge to a level where you can discuss anything from literature to philosophy.

The word fiasco has a fascinating history rooted in Italian culture/

Fiasco in Italian literally means "bottle," specifically a bottle with a round body and a long neck, often used to store wine or olive oil. These bottles were commonly used in Italy, and the word itself has been in use for centuries.

The connection to failure likely comes from a phrase used in Italian theatre: "far fiasco" or "fare fiasco," which translates to "make a bottle." This expression was used to describe a performance that went disastrously wrong.

Some believe that in the Venetian glassmaking industry, a flawed or misshapen bottle would be considered a fiasco, and thus a failure. This idea may have crossed over into theatrical language.

SC Language Solutions offer specialised tutoring in Italian language and culture and can take you to the next stage of your learning.

Do you know of this French idiom: "Mettre la charrue avant les bƓufs" ? In English "to put the carriage before the oxen".

This expression has been used figuratively for centuries to describe any situation where someone reverses the natural or logical order of things. It has retained its metaphorical meaning in the French language, warning against getting ahead of oneself or trying to achieve results without following the proper steps.

In essence, it's a reminder to do things in a sequence that makes sense, reflecting the logic and patience learned from early agricultural life.

The Statue of Liberty, gifted by France to the United States in 1886, commemorates the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence and represents the friendship between the two nations. The idea originated from Édouard RenĂ© de Laboulaye, a French political thinker, who envisioned the statue as a symbol of liberty and democracy. Designed by sculptor FrĂ©dĂ©ric Auguste Bartholdi and engineered by Gustave Eiffel, the statue depicts a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom.

Have you heard of the French region of Burgundy? This iconic region is one of the less visited, see how the poet Christopher Morley described it in his poem Ballad of French Rivers at the beginning of the 1910s.
SC Language Solutions offers cultural and linguistic advancement classes for students of all ages.

Of streams that men take honour in
The Frenchman looks to three,
And each one has for origin
The hills of Burgundy;
And each has known the quivers
Of blood and tears and pain—
O gallant bleeding rivers,
The Marne, the Meuse, the Aisne.

Says Marne: “My poplar fringes
Have felt the Prussian tread,
The blood of brave men tinges
My banks with lasting red;
Let others ask due credit,
But France has me to thank;
Von Kluck himself has said it:—
I turned the Boche’s flank!”

Says Meuse: “I claim no winning,
No glory on the stage,
Save that, in the beginning
I stove to save Liége.
Alas that Frankish rivers
Should share such shame as mine—
In spite of all endeavours
I flow to join the Rhine!”

Says Aisne: “My silver shallows
Are salter than the sea,
The woe of Rheims still hallows
My endless tragedy.
Of rivers rich in story
That run through green Champagne,
In agony and glory
The chief am I, the Aisne!”

Now there are greater waters
That Frenchmen all hold dear—
The Rhone, with many daughters,
That runs so icy clear;
There’s Moselle, deep and winy,
There’s Loire, Garonne and Seine,
But O the valiant tiny—
The Marne, the Meuse, the Aisne!

Les gorilles au Gabon sont une partie intĂ©grante de la biodiversitĂ© du pays, vivant principalement dans les forĂȘts tropicales denses. Cependant, ils sont menacĂ©s par la dĂ©forestation et le braconnage, malgrĂ© les efforts de conservation du gouvernement gabonais et des organisations internationales. ProtĂ©ger ces grands singes est crucial pour maintenir l'Ă©quilibre Ă©cologique et la richesse naturelle du Gabon.

Italian, like French, uses the subjunctive to express several emotions. The subjunctive mood in Italian is used to express doubt, desire, uncertainty, or possibility. It's often used in dependent clauses that are introduced by certain conjunctions, such as che (that), affinché (so that), senza che (without), benché (although), and others.

The subjunctive is formed (for regular verbs) according to the following endings after the verb's root:
Person/Subject Present Subjunctive Ending
io (I) -i
tu (you) -i
lui/lei (he/she) -i
noi (we) -iamo
voi (you all) -iate
loro (they) -ino
