Inspectorate ALERT: Scammers taking advantage of peoples' lost pets

The Sandton SPCA inspectors have been made aware of a group of scammers who contact owners who have posted details of their lost pets on social media platforms, print posters and WhatsApp groups and pretend to have found their animals. These horrible people demand that the owners pay a cash deposit via e-wallet, following which they will release details of the lost pets' whereabouts. After they have received the money ... they disappear with no way to contact them back.

There have recently been cases reported by devastated owners missing their beloved pets in the Norwood and Lombardy East areas. Both of these cases are being investigated and any feedback on the outcomes will be shared with our supporters.

In the meantime, be alert and aware of this criminal activity.

MISSING PET. Do you want this to be you?

On a recent vet visit, we decided to check Scruffy's chip. He was chipped 12 years ago when we adopted him from the SPCA. To our dismay it wasn't working, they couldn't find the chip. 🧐😱 Scruffy also recently lost his name tag too!

Luckily we checked, and we will be taking the rest of the family to be checked too. It is not a risk worth taking. Every year especially around this time pets go missing. The shelters are already overwhelmed. Play your part and get them chipped. You may be a responsible pet owner, but accidents happen.

It has come to our attention that the attached message is doing the rounds again on social media advising people that raw eggs could save your dog in the event of poisoning.

This is as fake as the fact that the earth is flat.

If you suspect poisoning please phone a vet for advise or rush your pet through - we are available 24/7.

Please refrain from giving your pet a raw egg to try and counter the toxin/poison. The raw egg could contain Salmonella which could lead to Salmonellosis. Your dog could also aspirate on the egg if it goes down the trachea and ends up in the lungs. Which could lead to further complications.

If it was me and I got forced to swallow a raw egg, I would most probably gag or vomit - why would your pet not suffer the same fate?

Should one induce vomiting in a poisoned pet you stand the chance of a chemical burn if the pet swallowed something like chlorine.

Please think before acting on these tips that circulate on social media.

Would you force a raw egg down your mother's throat if you thought she ingested something potentially harmful? I can already see mine swinging her arms at me furiously, boy am I in for it when she recovers.
