Ten days of End-of-life Tipsā¦ day #7
When someone stops eating or drinking, it can be really hard to accept, but it is a normal part of the dying process. If they stop drinking, their mouth may be dry, but this does not always mean they are dehydrated.
Sometimes it is a matter of safety to stop food and waterā¦ trust that too. The last thing you want is for your person to aspirate.
They might choose to stop because of their own fears. Some signs to watch for:
Pocketing food in their cheek
Saying no to food
Keeping their lips closed tightly
Turning away when food is brought toward their mouth
Most people equate food to love and when they cannot provide that, it feels like you are hurting themā¦ I get that. Please know that you are not.
Being at their bedside, talking to them, massaging their hands or feet, reading to them, playing their favorite music, or just letting them know they are safe and not alone can bring comfortā¦ do these things instead ā¤ļø
And remember, at the very end of life food and water can actually be harder on the body when it is trying to let go. Food and water is not necessary when someone is dying, and you are not hurting them by following their lead, or simply not forcing it.

I am asked this often, and it has become one of my favorite conversations to have with people. I find it beautiful and almost miraculous that they are able to have visitors at the end of their life, which is usually someone from their past who has died. It doesnāt always work out that way though, sometimes they are strangers, but very rarely are they fearful of them, in fact, it is usually a welcomed visitor and a reminder that they are not alone. ļæ¼
In my experience, people have seen friends and family members that have died, pets that come back to lay at the bedside, and oftentimes children are playing nearby, which is also comforting.
Unless somebody is afraid, I never try to correct them and tell them that no one is thereā¦ Just because we donāt see them doesnāt mean they are not there.
It is not always at the very end of life, I have witnessed people having conversations with someone they see but I do not, months before they die.
I canāt explain why some people have the visitors and others do not, perhaps it is the sense of awareness that they have of their impending death, perhaps they need a hand to hold, and a guide to show them the way. ļæ¼ The one thing Iām certain of though is that most people find it comforting and that is good enough for me. ļæ¼
