Due to hearing loss speech during a conversation can be unclear and the person with hearing loss can only hear bits and piece of the spoken sentence, in which their brain needs to work extra hard to focus and decipher what was said by the speaker, this intense focus can lead to listening fatigue and emotional distress like frustration and irritation.

- Get their attention.
- Always face them when speaking to them.
- Talk slower (this makes your voice clearer and automatically louder).
- Limit the distance between you and them (Distance makes your voice softer).
- Don't mumble.
- Don't yell (Yelling does make your voice louder, but not clearer to them).
- Limit background noise (background noise can make it harder to focus on your voice).

Ear infection is known as an infection just behind the eardrum.
The middle ear is usually filled with air, but due to the Eustachian tube (tube connecting the middle ear and throat), not functioning as it should the middle ear gets filled with fluid.
Ear infection is common in babies and children between the ages of 0 – 3 years, because their Eustachian tubes are smaller.

How will I know if I or my child has ear infection?
- Pain in the ear
- Fluid leaking out of the ear
- Pulling or rubbing the ears
- Inconsistent response to soft sounds
- Trouble sleeping
- Loss of appetite
- Flu, cold, cough, runny or stuffy nose
- Nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea

What can I do?
- Place a warm cloth over the infected ear
- Go to the doctor or clinic for medication to clear up the infection
- Don't throw anything in the ear, unless prescribed by your doctor
- If no improvement ask the audiologist, doctor or clinic to refer you to an ear-, nose - and throat specialist (ENT) for treatment.
