HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY CAN BE PRODUCED ON A ROOFTOP OF A HOUSE 🏠? HOW VIABLE IS IT?
===============
My understanding is that the policy direction is to have houses install solar panels on their rooftops to generate electricity for consumption and where there is excess to send to the national grid. This is really complex stuff bringing Zambia into the 21st Century. I’m truly excited.

I hope that we will not have the defeatists coming to discourage the government not to embark on this technologically challenging process and idea! This is almost like we’re embarking on part of what we needed to run a nuclear power plant! We can do it!

However, we need to temper our expectations because the amount of electricity that can be generated from solar energy on the rooftop of an average house is limited.

According to experts in the energy field, an average house roof size is about 150 square meters (most of the houses in Zambia are much smaller than this). In this case, the suitable roof area for solar panels will be approximately 70 square meters.

If one installs good quality solar panels, the level of power generation will be between 2-5 kilowatts of electricity per day.

In order to have context, please note that the amount of electricity used by an average household per day varies significantly.

Here are some approximate daily electricity usage figures for an average household:

- *United States*: •30kWh/day
- *India*: •7kWh/day
- *Europe*: •7kWh/day

In the case of Zambia the average household electricity usage is approximately *8kWh/day* for 3-5 inhabitants in a household.

Please bear in mind that in order to have at least 5kWh/day in Zambia, the cost of installation of the solar system is incredibly prohibitive. For example, the optimal system to install for an average house in Zambia will be the 5kW solar system. This solar system will cost approximately $15,000 (K400,000) for equipment and about the same amount for batteries. In total each household will require something in the neighborhood of K500,000!!!!This is not taking into account the installation costs!!!!

Is solar really a viable option for the majority poor Zambians? Your guess is as good as mine.

In the end, we have to wait and see when all these wonderful programs are rolled out and how they will work in reality.

“NET-METERING”… The New craze … 🙏🏽
================
I have always believed that we must be very weary when we see someone using complex words to communicate to non-technical people. When you hear someone using complex language, it’s either of two things.
1. The person is lying or
2. The person does not understand clearly what they’re talking about.

For the last few days, we have been bombarded with the word “NET METERING”. Even people like myself who are highly educated and highly exposed, have had to do some research to understand the concept of “NET METERING”.

We have also been told that this concept will enable citizens who install solar panels for generation of electricity to earn extra money. I was excited and delighted about this forward-looking announcement.

We need to be a little more deliberate about how we communicate messages to our people. The mark of a good communicator is to make complex concepts easily digestible to a common person. It’s a mark of lack of intelligence to use complex concepts when communicating to people generally. It’s important to use simple words to explain technical concepts.

So what is “NET METERING”?

In simple terms, this is a method used to REDUCE BILLS incurred by consumers of electricity by allowing them to feed the excess solar energy they produce to the national grid. The excess energy they feed to the grid will be calculated and then used to reduce their bills (from ZESCO).

What I find a little confusing is the addition that people can make money out of this process. From my research, the idea of “NET METERING” is NOT to make money, in the business sense, but to reduce the energy bill burden on consumers.

With the current electricity deficit in the country, all efforts to ameliorate the current energy shortfall are welcome. Citizens must be encouraged to consider alternative sources of energy including the solar option. However, it’s important to be honest with our citizens by stating that the rooftop solar panels will not be enough to meet the household energy needs, let alone have excesss to sell to the national grid (I’ll discuss in my next article). Secondly, it’s important to reassure citizens that “NET METERING” will be very useful when we have “cost-reflective” electricity tariffs which will be beyond the reach of most of our people. This is one of the methods the IMF has been using to cushion the “cost reflective” agenda in the energy sector.

In conclusion, my research seems to indicate that “NET METERING” is aimed to REDUCE energy bills and NOT to earn electricity customers revenue in the business sense. This is clear because, rooftop solar power solutions CANNOT be sufficient to provide all the household energy needs and have “excess” to “sell” to the national grid (my next article will explain that)

KENYA IS A WORRYING EXAMPLE OF IMF OVER-REACH
====================
Just this year, President William Ruto was being wined and dined by President Joe Biden praising him for being the beacon of democracy in Africa. Kenya also signed one of the most powerful treaties and agreements the US has granted to an African country. President William Ruto is revered outside his country.

However, like the case is with many African countries, it’s almost a playbook of the West that they will praise a leader who almost invariably works against his people. The US Government supported the government of Mobutu Sese Seko (Zaire)?the government of Hastings Kamuzu Banda (Malawi) as long as these leaders did the bidding for their interests. They overlooked everything negative these leaders did to their people and countries including wanton looting of national resources.

For those of us who follow American and European foreign policy, the principles underpinning European and American values are the same. For example, the United States believes in principles such as “manifest destiny”, “American exceptionalism” and many other doctrines which have determined how America postures to the world.

By extention, all countries in Europe are inherently racist and view Africa as a continent where they can get natural resources for cheap. But in order to get natural resources for cheap, they need compliant puppet leaders to ensure their interests are protected.

Kenya is now going through a very difficult time because the government of Kenya has decided to pay more attention to the needs of the IMF and condemning their citizens to painful austerity measures. The Kenyans are generally very aggressive and very alert. They have pushed back against their government. Sadly people have lost their lives in the process.

No development will come to Kenya if the country degenerates into political or civil instability. We hope that what’s happening in Kenya will quickly be nipped in the bud and that civility and normality will prevail.
