President Hichilema outlines Success in the Education Sector.

The President of the Republic of Zambia Mr. Hakainde Hichilema on Friday 8th September officially opened the 3rd of the 13th National Assembly with his national address focusing on he achievements made so far in ensuring a brighter future.

The theme for the President’s address was, “Building on the socio-economic gains for improved livelihoods and a better Zambia.”

President Hichilema said the theme calls upon every Zambian citizen and the entire nation to unite and build upon individual and collective achievements forging a more productive and unified nation.

As regards to Education the President pointed out as follows:

1. Free education policy has created opportunities for all citizens to access education. To avoid compromising the quality of education, the government has continued to increase learning spaces.

2. The construction of 149 secondary schools across the country has since been completed and all the schools are now operational.

3. 132 early childhood and 61 secondary schools are at various levels of completion.

4. Government has continued to procure desks through various forms of financing, such as the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

5. As at July 2023, a total number of 373,848 desks had been procured, out of which 353,120 were procured through the cdf.

6. About 747,696 pupils are now learning while seated on desks. unlike before, all these desks are being produced locally by our citizens across the country. Creating the much needed jobs and saving on foreign exchange.

7. Government will this year, recruit 4,500 teachers to further reduce the teacher deficit in our schools.

8. To equip children with lifelong and equitable quality education, government is placing equal emphasis on building practical skills, entrepreneurship and qualifications required by industry.

9. Enrolments in skills training centres have increased due to the policy measures being implemented by government.

10. In 2022, 76,500 Government enrolled in various fields, in Tevet institutions and youth resource centres. The number has risen to 86,700 in 2023. Out of those enrolled in the skills development programmes, about 47,000 have been sponsored at the local level across the country under the constituency development fund.

11. Government, this year, reintroduced meal allowances to improve the welfare of students in our universities. as a result, 32,000 students are benefiting from this policy decision.( )

2023 LITERACY MONTH LAUNCHED

Education Minister Hon. Douglas Syakalima says government has prioritised education because it is a weapon to fight social vices such as poverty, exclusion and moral degradation.

Hon. Syakalima said it is for this reason that government introduced the Education for All policy that has provided free education in the country.

The Minister was speaking Thursday7th September 2023, on ZNBC TV when he launched the international literacy month whose theme is “promoting literacy for a world in transition: building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies.”

Hon. Syakalima said the theme points to the importance of promoting literacy in a world that is constantly changing.

“Literacy should not only refer to basic reading and writing, but also to the ability to think critically, analyse, understand information and utilize it in our everyday situations.” Hon. Syakalima pointed out.

He went on to say that: “Literacy drives the economy of any nation, as former President of the United States of America, Barrack Obama said, ‘’literacy is the most basic currency of the knowledge economy.’’

VERA CHILUBA PRIMARY SCHOOL IN DESKS AVALANCHE

Education Minister Hon. Douglas Syakalima is pleased with the rise in mass manufacturing of school desks by various sectors in the country.

Hon. Syakalima says desks are being manufactured locally by various sectors including individual schools and Trades Institutions.

The Minister says his Ministry is now confident that by December this year there will be enough desks in Schools countrywide.

Hon. Syakalima was speaking in Lusaka on 4th September 2023, when he distributed 100 desks to Vera Chiluba Primary School in Lusaka’s Mutendere Township.

“With the introduction of Education for all, we have seen about 3-Million Children return to class. As a Ministry we are faced with a good problem of limited desks, but now we are not concerned because there mass manufacturing of desks by not only my Ministry but various sectors including individual schools.” Hon. Syakalima said.

He said the Ministry of Education is optimistic that the deficit of desks will soon be a thing of the past.

And Vera Chiluba Primary school Head Teacher Annie Zgambo said her school is grateful for the gesture as the school had a deficit of about 200 desks.
