PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA EMPHASISES ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY IN THE “NEW DAWN" GOVERNMENT President Hakainde Hichilema has emphasized that environmental sustainability is a key pillar his new Dawn administration. Speaking when he officially opened the first session of the thirteenth National Assembly, President Hichilema stated that his administration intends to make the country a global icon for environmental sustainability and champion of the green economy. He said his administration will champion environmental sustainability and execute measures that will benefit future generations through the planned Ministry of Green Economy and Environment. The four main areas that his government would pursue over the next five years are economic transformation and job creation, human and social development, environmental sustainability, and a good governance environment. The Republican President emphasized that environmental sustainability is key to economic recovery, continued growth, and improved livelihoods of people. “The value of ecosystems and their biodiversity are neither fully appreciated nor translated into monetary terms. As such, we need to appreciate these resources by utilizing them sustainably so as not to deprive future generations,” the President said. The President, however, observed that Zambia's natural resources are under threat from a variety of factors, including habitat transformation, encroachment, uncontrolled fires, climate change, unsustainable exploitation, pollution, and invasive species. The President underlined biodiversity and ecosystem conservation, strengthening the institutional framework, pursuing low carbon and climate resilient development pathways, and implementing international agreements and protocols as some of the measures to protect Zambia's natural resource capital.
