Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the field of computer science focused on creating systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks include, but are not limited to, understanding natural language, recognizing patterns, solving problems, making decisions, and learning from experience.

Zambia has seen a lot of discussions from digital transformation to AI. Furthermore, there have been several workshops, meetings, and trainings discussing AI-related issues. However, the country must look at establishing an AI authority in Zambia.

This will require a critical conversation such as are we ready as a country to have an AI Authority? Is the Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) ready for an AI department? Is Smart Zambia ready to have an AI department? Is Zambia prepared to harness the transformative power of AI through a unified governance approach?

It is not just about the potential of AI, but rather Zambia's readiness to embrace it. We haven’t seen much when it comes to national discussions on AI governance that recognize its potential and the importance of a data-driven framework.

If we look at the African Union's 2024 continental AI strategy, it highlights the transformative potential for Africa. Furthermore, the AI strategy document says AI has great potential for Africa’s socio-economic transformation and cultural renaissance. It will contribute to attaining the African Union Agenda 2063 and Sustainable Development Goals.

Zambia’s AI landscape is still fragmented with a lot of data in Silos and very isolated.

To change this current landscape and unlock the potential of AI, the Information and Communication Technology Association ICTAZ must work with the government to conduct a comprehensive, data-driven analysis of

Africa's lack of technological expertise and infrastructure is a significant obstacle to fully benefiting from its natural resources. The issue is twofold:

1. _Technological gap_: Limited access to modern technologies and machinery needed for efficient extraction, processing, and manufacturing.
2. _Human capital deficit_: Insufficient number of skilled technocrats, engineers, and technicians to operate and maintain complex technologies.

Brief solution:

1. _Invest in education and training_: Develop programs focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to build a skilled workforce.
2. _Technology transfer_: Collaborate with foreign partners to acquire modern technologies and machinery.
3. _Infrastructure development_: Build roads, energy systems, and transportation networks to support industrial development.
4. _Public-private partnerships_: Encourage joint ventures between local governments and private companies to develop and operate mineral processing facilities.
5. _Regional cooperation_: Share knowledge, resources, and expertise across African countries to accelerate development.
6. _Innovation and R&D_: Encourage research and development to create homegrown solutions and improve existing technologies.

By addressing these challenges, Africa can unlock its mineral wealth and drive sustainable economic growth.
