What can we do about natural resource decline driving poverty? | Sebastian Scott | TEDxLusaka 08/11/2023

In this talk, Sebastian proposes that regenerative agriculture, farmer managed natural regeneration (FMNR), planned grazing, and community management of natural resources can be used together to change the current trajectory. Though Sebastian Scott began a career in rural development, in 2001, he took the unorthodox route of becoming a ‘small-scale, hand-hoe farmer’ in order to learn the art of agriculture in-depth.

If you are planning on planting trees this rainy season here is a bit of advice about ficus - don't plant them near the house or in small gardens. In the ground they are rapid growers which can grow to over 20m tall, but can be invasive, potentially damaging foundations, pipes, and sewage systems.

The ficus (fig) family includes the popular ficus benjamina, ficus lyrata, ficus elastica as well as indigenous ficus bubu. Ficus are popular as indoor plants which is fine as their roots are contained and cannot do much damage. They are fantastic in large gardens where they can develop a thick dense shade canopy.

Several groups worked together to refresh the soil and create a lovely garden at Golden Glad School within the Kalingalinga area of Lusaka, so that students can enjoy fruits from these trees for years to come. If you are planning on planting trees this rainy season our tree of choice is the Trichilia emetica or Natal mahogany which is a fast growing indigenous tree which grows in most parts of Zambia. It grown up to 10 m, has a dense shade canopy and non-aggressive root system. It is evergreen and low maintenance and so is an easy choice for urban spaces, near houses, along roadsides and in car parks.

In what is a relatively dry area near Lusaka, Palm View Nursery has created an oasis in their propagation center. When they bought the land, many of the original trees had been cut down for charcoal, leaving large areas bare and exposed to the elements. It was here that they decided to begin the process of developing a palm nursery sustainably.

In this video, Maggy shares some of the challenges they face and shows us what eco-friendly practices they have put in place, proving that sustainable principles can work even in the world of commercial horticulture.

Why Greenspace?

Greenspace aims to inspire local gardeners by highlighting some of the garden and environmental projects taking place in Zambia as well as provide information for urban residents on what they can do in their homes and community to create green space of their own. The page covers everything from domestic gardening, garden accessories, plant nurseries etc. in an effort to encourage people to take care of plants and the environment both in and outside their homes.

As urban development continues to gallop in Zambian towns, land in being cleared at increasing rates, removing established ground covers and ecosystems. Green spaces, in any area provide tremendous benefits for health and well being in general and it important that as out towns grow we consciously move to maintain or create these areas.

So much work in already being done on environmental conservation. If citizens and organisations work together, we may be able to further enrich the lives of people through with benefits such as cooler temperatures, increased household food production, nutritional improvement, return of some natural ecosystems and wildlife habitats, improved ground water retention and more community engagement.

Greenspace: Plant tomorrow, today.
