ACEIDHA SUPPORTS ACCREDITATION OF TWO UNZA MASTER OF SCIENCE PROGRAMMES

The University of Zambia, through the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine with support from the Africa Centre of Excellence for Infectious Diseases of Humans and Animals (ACEIDHA), has internationally accredited two postgraduate programmes at Masters Level which have been aligned to Level 7 of the European Qualifications Framework for Life-long Learning (EQF LLL). The international accreditation exercise was undertaken by ASIIN. These are:-
1. Master of Science Tropical Infectious Diseases and Zoonosis
2. Master of Science One Health Analytical Epidemiology

ACEIDHA Prepares for 2023

The Africa Centre of Excellence for Infectious Diseases of Humans and Animals (ACEIDHA) Project Team has begun preparing for the year 2023 when it started its three-day Annual Work Planning meeting which will provide a roadmap for its operations.

Officially opening the planning meeting, ACEIDHA Centre Leader, Prof Bernard Hang’ombe, reminded members that the Project has been in existence for four (4) since its inception in 2018 and has provided a platform for bonding and teamwork.

The Centre Leader informed the members that the mission of the planning meeting was to develop an Annual Work Plan for 2023 that guide the operations of the Centre of Excellence and urged them to contribute freely.

ACEIDHA is the World Bank-funded project whose vision is to become a leading Centre for generating knowledge and skills for infectious disease prevention and control by conducting high level training through cutting edge research.

WORLD BANK GROUP TEAM VISITS ACEIDHA

The World Bank Group team, led by Education Practice Manager, Ms Safaa El Tayeb El-Kogali, visited the Africa Centre of Excellence for Infectious Diseases of Humans and Animals (ACEIDHA) at the University of Zambia (UNZA). On this visit, the team was accompanied by Director of Technology and Science, Mrs Jane Chinkusu, from the Ministry of Technology and Science in Zambia and was hosted by UNZA Vice-Chancellor, Prof Luke Mumba, at the Great East Road campus on Tuesday, 8th March 2022.

After a brief meeting and tour of the rehabilitated ACEIDHA Building, Ms Safaa El Tayeb El-Kogali expressed satisfaction at achievements attained by the Centre so far. Further, the World Bank Group team also found time to interact with some local and regional postgraduate students who are financially supported by ACEIDHA.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS TO MASTERS AND DOCTORAL STUDIES FOR 2021/2022 ACADEMIC YEAR

The Africa Centre of Excellence in Infectious Diseases of Humans and Animals (ACEIDHA) is looking for highly qualified and motivated young African scientists interested in research in infectious diseases that will culminate in obtaining MSc or PhD qualifications from the University of Zambia. This training programme will empower graduates with knowledge and skills to improve the quality of livelihoods of people, including animals and the environment, and ultimately contributing to the attainment of some of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In line with UNZA strategic plan, ACEIDHA is committed to the principle of gender equality and equal opportunities for all including individuals with physical disabilities and disadvantaged backgrounds (We believe in equal opportunities for all).
Through the funding received from the World Bank, ACEIDHA will offer scholarships (full or partial depending on circumstances) for the period of study at the University of Zambia, to deserving applicants meeting the selection criteria and whose proposed research areas will be in line with its mission and vision. AFRICA CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASES OF HUMANS ANDANIMALS

BRIEF BACKGROUND As a way to increase capacity to tackle increasing challenges of emerging infectious diseases affecting both humans and animals, the Government of Zambia obtained a loan from the World Bank for the creation of the Africa Centre of Excellence of Infectious Diseases of Humans and Animal at the University of Zambia and anchored in the School of Veterinary Medicine. These infectious diseases include Ebola, pneumonic plagues, anthrax, trypanosomiasis and other neglected tropical diseases. So ACEIDHA was lunched on 25 April 2018 by Minister of Higher Education Prof. Nkandu Luo, MP, at Intercontinental Hotel in Lusaka. ACEIDHA will develop research capacity and improve training of academic staff and students with the focus centred on research into infectious diseases which affect both humans and animals, such as bird flu, Ebola, tapeworms, Brucellosis, Anthrax and others. VISION: To become a leading centre for generating knowledge and skills for infectious disease prevention and control. MISSION: To conduct high level training through cutting edge research.
