News: Happy 90th birthday Arch
__From all of us, have a blessed day!
Some people can change your life forever. Maybe you’ve met that person and know them personally, or maybe you never have, but without that person, your life and possibly the entire world would have been profoundly different.
For me Archbishop [Emeritus] Desmond Tutu, who many fondly call "the Arch", is one of the very most important special people I have the honour to know, and spend memorable times with over the years. A Nobel Peace Prize laureate from back in 1984 when he was fighting against South Africa's apartheid, the Arch is one of the bravest, smartest, and funniest people I’ve ever met. And I think he did 99% of his most courageous peace work long after he was awarded the Nobel Prize.
Today the Arch is celebrating his 90th birthday [October 7] in Cape Town, and I understand he’ll be with his family who have come from all over the world to be with him.
Happy birthday from all our Masiyiwa family! May God's blessings shine upon you today. And may all of you here, too, please join me in sharing our well wishes to this great African legacy who has done so much for our continent and the world.
Some of you here will remember that I delivered the Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture two years ago on the Arch’s 88th birthday. That’s where this picture is from. It was really a special evening. During my address at Cape Town City Hall, I talked about corruption and how it destroys lives, businesses, and nations. You all have heard me talk about that before.
This evening [7 October] at 7 pm SAST The Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation is holding a special online birthday tribute event with four former Tutu Peace laureates talking about the subject: “Truth to Power: No Future without Justice”. Here’s a link if you want to register to watch online: https://www.tutu.org.za/hear-archbishop-tutu-and-the-dalai-lama-discuss-how-to-find-joy-amid-tragedy-at-the-11th-desmond-tutu-annual-peace-lecture/
They say actions speak louder than words... Well, that defines the Arch's life, though over the years he has been brilliant with words, too. I am sure some of you have read his sermons and books.
But you may not have seen this! Here's a letter he wrote a few years ago… to a baby! The father had written to ask the Arch if he'd write a letter to his newborn daughter because he was collecting letters for her to read when she grew older. What a great idea to ensure voices of our living legacies are shared with future generations!
The Arch [by then in about his 20th year of "retirement" just a few years ago], took the time to write and this is what he said to this tiny child across the world:
“Hello, little sister.
You don’t know me. I am a very old grandfather from South Africa nearing the end of my journey on earth while your journey – on another continent many miles away – is just beginning.
We may never meet on earth, so I thought to send you a secret. Well, it’s not really a secret because we should all know it. So I don’t mind if you tell everyone else.
Did you know that all people belong to one family; the human family? That although we may look nothing like each other, live in separate homes, practise our own cultures, subscribe to different religions – and some of us have more money than others – we are all sisters and brothers in God’s family?
You and I, and everyone else, were born with the same purpose. For love, for goodness and for one another.
God Bless You.”
Amen.
Now everyone here on the platform: I know for sure that the Arch will see your 90th birthday wishes so please introduce yourself, where you’re from and share any special message.
Whether you’re a Christian, Muslim, Jew, Hindi or any other faith tradition or none, while Arch may wear a purple Christian cloth, I am certain that, sometime along the line, in whatever country you’re in, the Arch has stood up for respect and dignity that has impacted YOU and all the human family.
Arch, I hope you have a blessed day filled with love, laughter and grace. I will continue to pray for you and for Mama Leah who let me also send an early happy birthday!
Selah.
