*CCC Activist Arrested For Trying To Kill Zanu PF Activist On Election Day*

ZIMBABWE Republic Police have arrested a third suspect, a member of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) in connection with the attempted murder of a Zanu PF activist, Cyril Nyauchi on election day.

Noel Munhuweyi, 33, of Sunningdale, has appeared in court facing three counts of attempted murder. He is also facing a charge of malicious damage to property.

Harare magistrate, Stanford Mambanje granted him US$300 bail and he will be back in court on November 1.

The police initially arrested CCC Sunningdale legislator Maureen Kademaunga over the same allegations.

Prosecutor General Nelson Mutsonziwa however withdrew the charges after failing to find evidence linking her to the crime.

Also charged are Harare Ward 10 councillor Clayd Mashozhera and another opposition activist Daudi Jessub already on remand.

Allegations are that Munhuweyi, Mashozhera, Jessub and other accomplices yet to be apprehended attacked Nyauchi while he was driving in Graniteside, Harare on August 23 2023.9.22

*MNANGAGWA’S SPEECH WAS AS VACANT AS THE HALL AT THE UNGA78 -FADZAI MAHERE*

Mnangagwa’s Speech Was As Vacant As The Hall At The UNGA78 -Fadzai Mahere
President Emmerson Mnangagwa addressed an almost empty auditorium at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) in New York, United States, on Thursday.

Prominent opposition lawmaker Fadzayi Mahere said Mnangagwa’s speech was as vacant as the hall it was delivered in. She posted on X:This is the world stage. Where are your groundbreaking ideas, thought leadership, or rousing call to action? Lies and empty rhetoric will take us nowhere. The speech was as vacant as the hall it was delivered in.

In his address, Mnangagwa stressed that it was imperative for nations to work together to strengthen international institutions for the accelerated attainment of Agenda 2030.

He also said that Zimbabweans have enjoyed peace, before, during and after the 2023 Harmonised Elections.

Mnangagwa called upon Western powers to unconditionally lift the sanctions they imposed on Zimbabwe, saying they were “designed to subjugate the sovereign will of the Zimbabwean people.”

*[🌕] Ramaphosa confirms SADC plans to hold summit over Zimbabwe poll report*

HARARE – SADC is set to summon Zimbabwean authorities and representatives of the SADC election observer mission to discuss contents of a damning report on Zimbabwe’s just-ended elections.

This was revealed Wednesday by South African president Cyril Ramaphosa while speaking to SABC on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly in New York.

According to the SADC observer mission preliminary report, the Zimbabwean election which ushered President Emmerson Mnangagwa back into power and restored Zanu PF’s parliamentary majority, was fraught with irregularities and did not meet regional and international benchmarks governing the running of credible polls.

Ramaphosa, who has come under fire at home and abroad for both congratulating and attending Mnangagwa’s inauguration, said the SADC observer mission report merely pointed out challenges to be addressed as opposed to it declaring the Zimbabwean poll as unfree and unfair.

“If one looks at that report,” Ramaphosa said, “it actually says there were challenges; challenges with regards to a number of things that have got to do with the election.

“Many countries throughout the world have such challenges; the United States is prime example with regards to the last election.

“They (observers) have said in the report, as I read it, that certain things need to be improved.

“They have not declared the election as invalid, unfree and unfair; they have highlighted certain challenges.”

According to the SADC election observer mission report, Zimbabwean institutions key to the running of the controversial poll failed to conduct themselves in an independent and transparent manner.

Ramaphosa said, “what was said by representative of the observer mission still got to discussed in SADC because it’s not a final report.”

He added, “Those are challenges that need to be addressed.

“Well, there is lack of transparency, they (observers) need to come up with the details and I would say, yes, let the details be put forward so that we can deal with them.

“So, we are waiting to receive that report at SADC level so that we can deal with it because if anything, it was an interim report.

“So, once the report is put to the SADC body, we will then debate it and we will also hear representations from Zimbabwe as well as the SADC observer mission.”

Ramaphosa on Tuesday repeated his demands for the unconditional lifting of Western imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe in his address to the UN General Assembly.

He said sanctions were also hurting his country which was forced to carry their burden of a calamitous Zimbabwean economy in one form or another.

The South African leader is viewed a disappointment by both his countrymen and Zimbabweans for failing to use his country’s influential status as a regional leader and a model democracy to deal with the root causes of the troubled neighbour’s endless crisis.

*Chiwenga is not happy with Mnangagwa’s Cabinet – Sources*

SOURCES within the military and those close to Chiwenga have revealed he is not happy with Mnangagwa’s Cabinet appointments and has noted the sidelining of party officials perceived to be his allies.

President Mnangagwa last week announced Ministerial appointments dominated by members of his family, and close allies; doing away with Chiwenga’s personal doctor Dr. John Mangwiro who was Deputy Health Minister among others.

Buoyed by a 52.6% Presidential election win, Mnangagwa appointed his son David Kudakwashe Deputy Finance Minister, his nephew Tongai Mnangagwa as Deputy Tourism Minister and Angeline Gata, wife to ZESA’s untouchable Sydney Gata as Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education.

Usual allies Monica Mutsvangwa, and husband Christopher were also rewarded with Women’s Affairs and War Veterans Ministerial posts. Christopher played a key role in the 2017 coup that landed Mnangagwa Zimbabwe’s presidency. Jenfan Muswere, who is reportedly related to the Mnangagwas was appointed Information Minister, despite initial protests at how he had been allowed to contest in Zimbabwe’s August 23 elections considering his lack of support.

*ZIMBABWE HEADED INTO DARK CLOUD OF UNCERTAINTY – SAYS CCC AFTER ARREST OF THREE LEADERS, BARELY TWO WEEKS AFTER MNANGAGWA’S INAUGURATION*

THE Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has warned of a dark period ahead which it argues is evidenced by the arrest of three opposition leaders within two weeks of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s swearing-in.

Already Sunningdale Member of Parliament (MP) Maureen Kademaunga has spent a night in police cells on charges of attempted murder and malicious damage to property which the State has since withdrawn.

Party Deputy Spokesperson Ostallos Siziba is expected in court Friday on charges of having incited violence that led to the abandonment of the Dynamos versus Highlanders premier league match at Barbourfields on Sunday.

On Thursday Harare Deputy Mayor Kudzai Kadzombe who was sworn into office Monday was arrested on assault charges. She is also expected in court on Friday.

*JUST IN* :Relations between Zambia and Zimbabwe continue to go south after this Zambian minister, Elisha Mutambo, addressed Zambians who handed him a petition against ZANUPF leadership and said that he was escalating their demands to SADC, AU and UN through Zambia's Foreign Ministry.

The petition came after senior ZANUPF leader Patrick Chinamasa and ZANUPF sidekick Rutendo Matinyarare insulted the late Zambian president, Levy Mwanawasa, and insinuated that they killed him for criticising ZANUPF’s repressive rule.

Matinyarare also threatened to kill the current Zambian president Hakainde Hichilema after the SADC elections Observer team led by Zambian Nevers Mumba called the Zimbabwean elections shambolic and a sham.

The Zambian minister said they were taking the petition to SADC, AU and the UN

*Winston Chitando Moved From The Ministry Of Mines*

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has moved Winston Chitando from the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development to the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Mines came under scrutiny after an Al Jazeera expose on the alleged “Gold Mafia”, a term that refers to a network or organised crime group involved in illegal gold mining, smuggling, and trading. The Al Jazeera documentary highlighted how these individuals or groups exploit unlawful gold operations, leading to corruption, environmental harm, and human rights violations.

The documentary investigates the scale of this illegal gold trade and its negative impact on affected areas and communities. Such illicit activities pose a threat to Zimbabwe’s goal of reaching a $12 billion mining industry and tarnish the country’s reputation.

Chitando has assumed the role of Minister of Local Government, taking over from July Moyo, who has been reassigned to the Ministry of Public Service. The Ministry of Local Government has also faced scrutiny due to various tender controversies, including the Pomona waste-to-energy agreement between Harare City Council (HCC) and Geogenix, fronted by Delish Nguwaya. The project aims to produce 22MW of electricity and generate around 300 job opportunities. However, the deal requires Harare to pay US$22,000 daily to Geogenix BV, which some CCC councillors consider excessive for a council struggling to provide essential public goods and services due to limited resources.

*“ZANU PF is failing to renew itself” -Political Analyst*

Political commentators have said the reappointment of Kembo Mohadi as Vice President of Zimbabwe is a clear indication that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is not serious about progressive change.

Mohadi and Constantino Chiwenga were sworn in as Vice Presidents by Chief Justice Luke Malaba at the State House in Harare, on Friday.

While the reappointment of Chiwenga was largely expected, Mohadi’s return came as a surprise to some Zimbabweans given that he resigned from the vice presidency in disgrace in March 2021.

Mohadi stepped down after the media reported on his alleged illicit relationships with women, some married, including a former subordinate.

He, however, did not admit to the allegations but said his phone call recordings to different women were fake and designed to wreck his political career.

Speaking to SOURCE, Bernard Magugu, a political analyst, said ZANU PF is failing to renew itself. He said:

This is a shame! It means ZANU is just recycling deadwood who won’t bring any depth, innovation, creativity and flair we need in this era!

ZANU can’t even emulate the likes of Chama Chamapinduzi who have been recycling leadership or the ANC who gained independence later than others but have changed five presidents since 1994 and now Cyril Ramaphosa, is the sixth.

How will the former liberation combatants win us that independence? You cannot be a hero of two struggles and deliver the needs of the nation objectively.

At least if ZANU had appointed two young people to be VPs, people who have a new vision and will to liberate the people in economic independence. Maybe it was going to be better, not this fossil stuff!

Iphithule Maphosa said both Mohadi and Chiwenga should not have been retained, and one of the two Vice Presidents should be a woman. Said Maphosa:

It shows the type of leader that President Mnangagwa is, who defies public expectation and does the opposite without accountability.

*President Mnangagwa mourns Cde Joshua Malinga; announces national hero status*

Condolence Message by His Excellency the President, Dr E.D. Mnangagwa, following the passing on of Cde Joshua Teke Malinga, Harare, 10th September, 2023.

I learnt with a deep sense of grief and sadness of the passing on last Friday of Cde Joshua Teke Malinga, following a brave fight against a malignant form of prostrate cancer. A Nationalist stalwart and vocal proponent of disability rights, the late Cde Malinga was a leading voice both in the ruling Party, Zanu PF, and in Government on disability issues, including ensuring, in his capacity as my special advisor, that Government policy was alive and sensitive to interests of disabled persons across gender, age, class or colour. My decision to appoint him to advise me on this all-important yet often easily overlooked area was informed by his unequivocal and fervent interest in protecting and defending the rights of disabled persons.

A victim of polio at a tender age of 2, the late Cde Malinga’s illustrious life and career bore testimony to the fact that circumstances of disability need not diminish one’s ability and life chances. For him, disability became a spur to an exceptional life and career, including courageously participating and sharing in the risks of nationalist politics, and in the struggle for our Independence. An accounting graduate, Cde Malinga rose through the ranks of the country’s nationalist politics until he was elevated to the Central Committee and, later to the Politburo of the ruling Party, Zanu PF which he served with utmost loyalty, even as his health gradually failed and deserted him. He never missed any Party functions or meetings.

A two-time Executive Mayor of our second capital, Bulawayo, the late Cde Malinga, personified diligence and integrity in civil and municipal matters, virtues woefully scarce nowadays. His wise leadership and profound counsel will thus be sorely missed at different echelons of our Party, our Government and our Nation.

May I, on behalf of our Nation, the ruling Zanu PF Party, Government, my Family and on my behalf, express my deepest, heartfelt condolences to the Malinga Family on this their saddest loss. May they derive solace from the knowledge that the Nation in whose defence and interest Cde Malinga was put under illegal sanctions, today joins them in mourning his sad, untimely demise, and in according him deserved honours and a befitting farewell.

In recognition of his distinguished role in the struggle for our Independence, in the development of our Nation since its inception, and in championing the cause of special interest groups in public policy and national development, the ruling Zanu PF Party has unanimously decided to accord Cde Malinga National Hero Status.

May his dear soul rest in eternal peace.

*[🌕] Coltart Lays Out Plans To Address Bulawayo's Challenges*

Bulawayo Ward 4 councillor, David Coltart (CCC) has said if elected as Bulawayo mayor, the local authority will start by cleaning the city which he said has become a cesspit.

Coltart is CCC leader Nelson Chamisa’s choice for the Bulawayo mayoral job, and councillors have reportedly been instructed to vote for him.

Speaking during an interview with Southern Eye on Friday, Coltart said the Council will engage businesses, churches and other pertinent parties to rid the city of filth. He said:

Bulawayo has become a cesspit. There is rubbish everywhere. Before we can do anything else, we have to start trying to clean the city up. That cannot just be done by council alone. It will have to involve local businesses and the general public along with residents, associations, churches and the like. But that is my first immediate plan if elected.

Coltart also said the incoming council will review all existing contracts that the city council has entered into over the years to ensure that the local authority was shortchanged. He said:

I want to establish in my own mind that these (contracts) have been properly entered into, that they are lawfully entered into, that they followed correct tender procedures and that they are in the best interests of the citizens of Bulawayo. If I find that they are not, I will certainly consult the city council’s lawyers to see if there is any way in which they can either be amended or if need be, cancelled altogether.

Some of the controversial contracts entered into by Bulawayo City Council over the past few years include the US$60 million tender awarded to Terracotta to refurbish Basch Street terminus and the vehicle parking deal with Tendy Three Investments (TTI).

Coltart said the Council will try to persuade the central government to be granted more autonomy “in line with the devolution aspirations of the constitution.”

*[🌕] Zimbabwe Faces Drought As El Niño Returns*

Zimbabwe is likely to receive less than average rainfall leading to a drought in the 2023/24 cropping season due to the El Niño climate phenomenon.

El Niño refers to a warming of the ocean surface, or above-average sea surface temperatures, in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.

El Niño can make extreme weather events more likely in certain regions, including extreme heat, droughts, storms and flooding.

A drought will most likely slow down Zimbabwe’s economic growth projections, trigger higher food prices and stoke inflation.

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in July this year declared the start of El Niño.

WMO estimated there is a 90 percent probability of the El Niño event persisting through the second half of the year and it is expected to be “at least moderate strength”.

According to the UN weather agency, El Niño occurs on average every two to seven years in episodes lasting nine to 12 months.

Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Madagascar are listed among countries in Southern Africa as highly exposed nations to El Niño.

According to ACAPS, a non-profit, non-governmental project that provides international, independent humanitarian analysis:

Zimbabwe is a country that requires close monitoring and where the effects of El Niño may lead to negative outcomes or generate humanitarian needs.

Forecast models anticipate the possibility of below-average rainfall towards the end of 2023, particularly in the central and southern regions.

Such forecasts would affect the region’s planting seasons, increasing the possibility of hardened drought conditions and affecting the country’s crop production, livestock and food security.

This forecast would pattern with previous El Niño events in Zimbabwe. In 2015–2016, an El Niño-driven drought affected most of Zimbabwe.

Below-average rainfall during the usual growing season led to crop failure, increased food prices, and heightened levels of food insecurity throughout the country.

Meanwhile, La Niña refers to the periodic cooling of sea-surface temperatures across the east-central equatorial Pacific and the weather phenomenon is associated with wetter summers in Zimbabwe.

*Veld fire destroys 5 houses in Zvishavane*

Story by Courage Bushe

FIVE families from the Bilashaba area of Zvishavane district have been left homeless after a veld fire destroyed their homes Tuesday night.

The origins of the fire remain a mystery.

"We don't even know where to start from as things stand, it is a serious blow,” said a victim.

Another victim said, “This is very bad especially since we do not know the origins of the fire and were caught unaware."

The government has however come to the rescue of the families with revelations that resources are being mobilised to assist the victims.

"We are trying to mobilise resources to assist the disturbed families," said Assistant District Development Coordinator for Zvishavane, Lucas Chinhara.

Environmental Management Agency Zvishavane District Education and Publicity Officer, Sally Maguvu said, "We are continually losing land to veld fires, and it's sad that families continue to be affected in the process, but various resources are being availed to cater for the disaster."

According to the Environmental Management Agency, the Midlands province has lost over 25 000 hectares of land to veld fires during the 2023 fire season.
