Tia here 👋

The clinic website is lost in space, and inaccessible. Whilst I work on a solution to get it back up and running, you can reach me here, or the clinic page, and by email and phone:

I’m not currently looking for a sugar daddy, so will not be responding to such enquires (jokes aside, it has actually happened!)

Phone call or text is best for appointment enquires.

A note on the building car park: development construction is under way for an upcoming Childcare centre. During the construction period, the building car park will be inaccessible. Please permit a little extra time when attending your appointment. My sincere apology for the inconvenience during this period.

As a small business, your understanding and support is greatly appreciated 🙏

I’m seeing a lot of in the clinic recently.

Burnout is a state of complete mental, physical & emotional exhaustion. You can feel like you’ve had the life sucked out of you. One of the biggest drivers for burnout is long term stress, and unresolved trauma (which of course, equals stress).

Burnout can manifest in a myriad of ways:

Feeling exhausted and unable to tackle even the most basic tasks
Low motivation, even for the things you normally enjoy
Difficulty focusing or concentrating
Feeling numb, or lacking a depth of emotion
Becoming easily triggered by even small things
Emotionally withdrawing from friends & family

Acupuncture works directly with the central nervous system to regulate the biochemicals and hormones involved in stress and mood. Additionally, modulates parasympathetic activity, the branch of the nervous system associated with rest, , digestion and tissue healing.

Here at Pulse, we practice in a manner, and place great value in providing a safe and comfortable space for you to be with your experience. Supporting you in this way, means that in time, you may transform the big emotions and experiences that are placing stress on your system and move toward a life of vitality.

Keen to explore how acupuncture can help you transform trauma and resolve burnout?

Anxiety is so prevalent in our community. Beyond Blue suggests that ¼ of Australians will experience an anxiety condition in their lifetime.

In Chinese medicine, all emotions are associated with a specific movement of Qi and when we experience anxiety, particularly over a prolonged period of time, our Qi is likely to concentrate or become stuck in the channel systems.

The most up to date research supports Acupuncture as an effective treatment for Anxiety.

A small 2021 study found that acupuncture treatment quickly reduced anxiety and lowered cortisol levels. An interesting thing about this study was that it showed Acupuncture to be effective both for people taking anti-anxiety medication and those who were unmedicated - meaning that whatever your situation, Acupuncture can support you in moving beyond anxiety.

Quality sleep is undoubtedly the most beneficial protective and reparative health intervention we have, and it happens naturally. Well, it should happen naturally…

Inadequate sleep is associated with a host of chronic health conditions, nearly half of all Australian adults report problems with sleep(1)

From a Chinese Medicine perspective, sleep is reliant upon an abundance of yin and blood to house the spirit during the night time. Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, light sleeping, restlessness or sleep that is disturbed with vivid dreams are all indicative of disharmony within the systems & substances of the body.

A 2021 systematic review & meta-analysis concluded that acupuncture was significantly associated with improvements in several objective sleep parameters (increases in total sleep time and efficiency, reductions in wake after sleep onset and number of awakening times) as well as subjective sleep quantity and quality in patients with primary insomnia (2).

This study recommended a minimum therapeutic threshold dosage of at least 12 sessions.

Chinese medicine is big on lifestyle as well, so keep an eye out for our next post with our top sleep hygiene suggestions.

Flight, fight, freeze, fawn…….

Recently in the clinic, I’ve been seeing a lot of people who are presenting in a state of ‘functional freeze’.

We can think of this as a blended state, where we are in a ‘freeze’ stress response, but rather than being in complete shutdown - we are able to go through the motions of life. In fact, we might appear to be doing really well in certain areas like work, where high performance can thrive alongside prolonged states of stress (for a time).

Now, the freeze response (like all stress responses) is essential, it plays a really important role in our survival. It’s when it doesn’t switch off, or when we rely on the freeze state to cope with high levels of stress for a prolonged period of time that the mechanism becomes problematic. It becomes our default state of functioning… Functional freeze.

What are some signs that you might be experiencing functional freeze?

Shallow, and or fast breathing
feeling dazed and dissociated but going through the motions
numb but physically present
excessive workaholism or distracting oneself through keeping busy
running on autopilot getting long lists done without being mentally present

Acupuncture can profoundly alter the body’s stress response. How?
improving heart rate variability (1)
Calming the release of excitatory neurochemicals which keep us feeling stressed (1)
Increase the release of endorphins which play an important role in the regulation of physical and emotional stress responses (2)

During your treatment, we will also guide you to connect with slow, deep, diaphragmatic breathing which can help tone the vagus nerve and return your nervous system to a state of balance.

If you’ve been living with a lot of stress lately, and you think you might be operating from a state of functional freeze - we’d love to support you to return to a state of balance. Book in today at https://www.pulseacupuncture.com.au/feesandbooking/

Frozen shoulder & Perimenopause - does it surprise you to see these two terms paired together?

Frozen shoulder tends to affect women more than men (some studies report almost 70% of cases to be female), and it usually occurs between 40 & 65 years of age. Yep - right when those hormones start changing as people move through perimenopause and beyond.

Western medicine suggests that this might be due to the decrease in oestrogen that coincides with this time of life, a hormone that is vital for protecting joints and reducing inflammation.

From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, perimenopausal years are characterised by a decline in Yin & Blood, two substances that provide vital nourishment to our joints, muscles and tendons. When our joints and sinews are undernourished, function is impaired, less movement in the shoulder allows stagnation to arise in the local area which leads to pain.

As the name implies - the main feature of a frozen shoulder is a severe restriction in the mobility of the shoulder. And pain. Pain can be really severe and intrusive, particularly during the early stages.

Swipe through above for an explanation of the 3 stages of frozen shoulder and some tips to help you toward a speedy recovery.

Acupuncture, and Chinese herbal medicine can help support you through all the stages of a frozen shoulder, as well as many of the characteristic experiences associated with perimenopause. Follow the link to book an appointment today https://www.pulseacupuncture.com.au/feesandbooking/

A whopping 20.55% of the Australian population live with migraines. That’s 1 in 5 people living a life where their well-being is significantly compromised on a regular basis.

Acupuncture can help! Acupuncture is supported by strong evidence showing it to be an effective intervention for alleviating & preventing migraines. A 2015 narrative review of more than 40 high-quality studies concluded that ‘Acupuncture seems to be at least as effective as conventional preventative medication for migraine and is safe, long-lasting, and cost-effective’

Here at Pulse, migraines are a common presentation, and in our experience, Acupuncture treatment can provide excellent lasting results.

Chinese medicine treats the individual; consultation involves exploration of common contributing factors including hormones, stress, fatigue, your specific triggers (including food), tailoring a treatment to your unique presentation.

How can acupuncture help with chronic pain? Functional neuroimaging has shown that acupuncture affects the brain in many ways, swipe through for details.

The efficacy of acupuncture for pain has been researched extensively. A study of almost 18,000 people found that pain relief was achieved after a course of 12-15 treatments and that the cumulative effect of acupuncture provided relief from pain that persisted for at least 12 months.
