2024 for The Norton Law Group.

As the new year rolls around - it brings us the opportunity to set goals and resolutions for a new work year. We are excited for a year of learning, growing and working closely with our team of wonderful lawyers and support staff, referrers and ofcourse, clients.

2024, as we know, is also bringing about change to the Family Law system including simplifying how the Court decides what care arrangements are in a child’s best interests. From May 2024, the Court is:

1. Removing the presumption that parents have equal shared parental responsibility;
2. Clarifying what kinds of communication are allowed during family law proceedings;
3. Making it clear that final parenting orders can only be changed if there has been a “significant change in circumstances”;
4. Clarifying the role of Independent Children’s Lawyers.

There is also a continued push for lawyers and litigants to use alternate dispute resolution pathways such as mediation, collaborative practice, parenting coordination and family therapy. As family lawyers we need to be familiar with the different resources available to families to assist in resolving their disputes and ongoing conflict. Parents often need a team of individuals to assist them with their separation and we need to encourage a more holistic approach to resolution of matters.

The Norton Law Group had such a wonderful night last night celebrating the Lawyers Weekly Partner of the Year Awards at The Star. We are very proud of our Gabriella Pomare to have been nominated in the Family Law category. We enjoyed a lovely night surrounded by passionate, inspiring and hardworking lawyers. Congratulations to all the finalists and winners.

On Saturday Evening, Gabriella Pomare together with some of our team, referrers and external colleagues had the pleasure of attending the annual Giant Steps Australia ball. It was a heartwarming and inspiring experience. Hearing from the parents, local
community and supporters was humbling. Giant Steps plays an important role in nurturing and supporting the needs of individuals on the autism spectrum, and indeed their families. The teachers and therapists work endlessly to assist in providing individualised programs at both school and also in the community.

Giant Steps Australia do not charge fees. The only way to assist them in contuining to provide the much needed education and support is to donate. Reach out, learn more and be apart of the community donations program.

The Norton Law Group has officially closed its doors for 2022! It was a ladies night out to celebrate the end of a wonderful year at The Norton Law Group. Sadly we missed out on enjoying the company of (photos with!) Franco, James, Daniel and Mary - but they celebrated in spirit. I am grateful for my wonderful team. They are a group of passionate, hard working and dedicated lawyers and support staff who always work to assist our clients in some of the most stressful of times. Before any application can be filed in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, parties are required to make a genuine effort to settle their dispute through at least one method of Dispute Resolution. Many matters are capable of resolution at this early stage in what is described as the pre-action procedure phase. This can include mediation, negotiations, round table conferences, collaborative practice and FDR. Once we have a better understanding of your matter, we can assist you on determining the best way forward in terms of dispute resolution to remain out of Court.

Today we welcome our newest Senior Associate to the team, Dalya Oraha. Dalya joins our growing Family Law Team. Dalya has over 10 years experience in family law. She is passionate about assisting parties during one of the most difficult periods in their lives and helping them to achieve sensible resolution for their family into the future.
