You don't have to tell us that financial statements are not very sexy.

But running a small business for profitability and growth requires a basic understanding of reports like the Income Statement, Cash Flow, and Balance Sheet.

Your financials tell a story about the type of business you have and how you want to run it. We want to help you tell that story, so we've put together a simple explanation of some of the most valuable accounting reports.🤓
Part 1: The Income Statement💡

An income statement is a valuable tool for determining how much a company earned or lost over a reporting period.

Check out the brief explanation below👇
We would love to hear from you. Did you learn something new? Have any questions? Please send us a message or comment below.

Are you feeling defeated? Tired? Stressed out?😓

We love Synergy Network's advice for when you're feeling overwhelmed. Knowing when to ask for help and confronting your perfectionism is essential to beating those small business owner blues.

We hope you got some well-earned rest this May long weekend!

Feeling constantly overwhelmed from too many demands? Putting in longer hours isn't the answer. Here are five things to do instead.

1. Pinpoint the source of overwhelm. Ask, “What one or two things, if taken off my plate would alleviate 80% of the stress that I feel right now?” and identify where you can break tasks down into manageable parts, ask for resources, or renegotiate deadlines.

2. Set boundaries on your time and workload. "Time box" the hours you spend on a task or project, leave the office by a certain time, or say no to specific types of work.

3. Challenge your perfectionism. Know when “good” is “good enough” by asking yourself, “What is the marginal benefit of spending more time on this task or project?” If the answer is very little, stop where you are and be done with it.

4. Outsource or delegate. Ask yourself, “What is the highest and best use of my time?” Teach or delegate activities that don’t fall within your answer to others.

5. Challenge your assumptions. If feeling overwhelmed is an ongoing struggle, it is likely that you have assumptions that are keeping you stuck in unproductive behaviors. Identify and debunk those assumptions so that you can reduce overwhelm and have more agency.

Meet Damaris👋

Damaris holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Human Resources Management from the University of Alberta. In early 2021 Damaris decided to go back to school to pursue a career in counselling psychology, and she is currently working on the prerequisites for the master's program.🎓

Over the past five years, Damaris has worked as a Corporate Recruitment and HR Professional for well-known retail and hospitality brands.

She also the owner of The Career Lab (www.thecareerlab.ca), which specializes in creating personalized resumes and cover letters, helping clients who are struggling with their job search or client are looking for a career change, but they aren't sure where to get started. 🧭

Her number one tip for small businesses who are looking to add to their team?📌

"Fit is everything, especially if you have a small team. Before you make any hiring decisions, you really want to ask yourself, can this individual do the job and will this individual work well with your team. It really takes one bad nut to throw a wrench in a team."

📣What Our Clients Are Saying 📣

➡️ Company Name?

TGB Welding Inc

➡️ What challenges did your company face before you began working with us?

I was a brand new company with no bookkeeping services in place. They took the time to come and meet me as a team and asked what I was looking for and at the time I wasn't even sure. They explained what they all did and it was exactly what I was looking for.

➡️ How were we able to help your company with these challenges?

Everything I was looking for they could do. If I had questions about something they would let me know right away and if it was something out of the ordinary they would figure it out in a very timely manner

➡️ What did you enjoy most about working with us?

I enjoy working with a smaller company as you get to know them on a personnel level and they always remind me what is due if it happens to slip my mind.

Meet Willem👋

Willem is an alumnus of Grant MacEwan and, most recently, NAIT - graduating with a diploma in marketing.

Prior to Gather, Willem spent his days equipping people for their outdoor adventures as a sales associate at Atmosphere. He aspires to do the same for entrepreneurs. Providing people with the best tools in the pursuit of their passion. 🧰

He recently explored the west coast in an ambulance he converted into a living space. This unique ability to see opportunities where others may not is why we added him to the Gather Team.

How can small business owners try marketing in an easy, actionable way? 📌

"Focus on consistently good service and meaningful connections. If you manage all of your business' tasks yourself, it's easy to spread your talents thin. Marketing doesn't have to use up all your time. Start by ensuring your customers get the best service, and you will see them return and spread the word.

Find a way to keep in contact with current and past customers. You can update your social media account, send emailed newsletters, or simply give them a call - whatever you choose, stay consistent. When it comes time for them to use or recommend the service, they will know exactly where to look." - Willem VanWeelden

Word of mouth problems in a masked world😷

As Albertans continue to mitigate the 3rd wave of Covid and its vaccination rollout, the way we communicate daily remains altered.

This presents struggles and opportunities for small business owners and the way they interact with their clients. We encourage small business owners to utilize the simple, effective means available online to find new ways to foster and establish community. 👨‍💻

One crucial aspect of running a small business in the modern age is maintaining a brand image online. Customers need a place to find you in a world with more orders and fewer storefronts.

Luckily we have some easy steps to help guide you.👇

1. Maintain at least one social media account like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. It allows you to engage with your community and enables them to see that you are still present and doing what you do best.

2. Post at least 3x a week. Even sharing things you personally enjoy can build a meaningful following for your current project and future endeavours.

3. Engage with your followers. People want to know that their concerns are being read by actual people. Our conversations may be different these days, but they are still worth having.

For today's , we want to talk about Cloud Computing☁️

Simply put, the Cloud refers to a place where you can store data on the internet. You can access this data from anywhere, anytime, with a device that connects to the internet.

At Gather, we use these handy data storage solutions to ensure our team has access to the same information from wherever that they are working.

📌 4 Reasons we like the Cloud:

✅ Backups - No more worrying about computer malfunctions or forgetting to save; when you upload a document into the Cloud, it is available from any device.

✅ Access Everywhere - Using the Cloud, we can all have access to the same documents, even simultaneously.

✅ Cost-Effective Storage - As a bookkeeping service, we used to store our client's important documents and receipts in our office. With the Cloud, we no longer need to have the same amount of physical space.

✅ Security - While no Cloud service is 100% safe from cybercriminals, they offer a great solution to companies that cannot invest in a private data storage security system.

Check out the video below to get a quick introduction to Google Drive and see a simple example of how we use the Cloud to share information. 👇

👉Kelsey has been behind the scenes at Gather since September 2020. She has worn many hats at our small company and is our get er’ done guru.

👉Currently living in the Netherlands, she has been on the move for the past two years, living on three different continents🌏

👉She shares our passion for YEG entrepreneurs. Before working with Gather, she worked in some of Edmonton’s best restaurants.

👉Since helping us with our rebrand, she has been busy finding new ways to provide solutions to our clientele.

So, tell us, what do you have in store for our clients?

"An exciting new addition to Gather Business Solutions!

Our clients come to us looking for a bookkeeper, but what we see more often than not is that they need numerous back-office services. Larger businesses can hire employees to manage the administration, marketing, bookkeeping etc. But small business owners have to do these jobs themselves or outsource using websites like Upwork or Fiverr. We want to offer our clients an outsourced option that provides flexible, reliable and professional office solutions.

Keep following our updates to learn about these services!" - Kelsey Trites

Meet Emily Bootsma👋

Emily has been working as a bookkeeper for Gather since 2016.

She is currently completing a diploma in Business Administration with a focus on Accounting at @[8208651525] (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology) 🏫

Before studying bookkeeping, Emily lived in Vancouver and completed a Professional Makeup Artist certificate at the internationally recognized Blanche Macdonald Centre.

Her advice for working with a bookkeeper?📌

"Active Communication! Sending important documents and keeping open communication is the number one way to get the most out of your outsourced bookkeeping professional. Some business owners can unintentionally avoid their bookkeepers because of their busy schedules. This miscommunication can lead to unwanted outcomes - missed deadlines, incorrect fillings. Active communication with your bookkeeping professional has the potential to reduce stress and encourage growth opportunities." - Emily Bootsma

What Our Clients Are Saying📢

Company Name? 👷‍♂️

Heritage Ventures Ltd.

What challenges did you and/or your company face before you began working with us? 💪

Getting my paperwork to my last bookkeeper was a chore. There were a lot of things my former bookkeeper wasn't aware of and a lot of unnecessary mistakes were made resulting in a CRA audit.

How were we able to help you and/or your company with these challenges? 📃

Getting my paperwork to Gather is easy. They are conveniently located but if I am tied up with other businesses, they will come and pick up my paperwork. Gather is a truly professional company and they take care of all my bookkeeping needs professionally. No need to worry about things getting missed.

Meet Irene Trites 👋

Irene is the founder of Gather Business Solutions formally known as Irene’s Bookkeeping and Office Solutions.

She is a born and raised Edmontonian, an avid Oilers fan, and is one of few to have held the Stanley Cup 🏆

She is passionate about small businesses, and her favourite part of the job is connecting with her clients about ways they can grow.

Her number one tip for new business owners? 📌

“Hire a bookkeeper! I see new business owners trying to do the bookkeeping themselves or enlisting their partners to do it for them. They miss claiming certain business expenses and critical deadlines. Taking care of your business finances is not like balancing your chequebook. Keep your relationship happy - hire someone else to do your books." - Irene Trites

💡Tax Tip: CEBA Loan Tax Consequences for 2020

CRA has indicated that ‘the forgivable portion of the loan is included in income in the year in which the loan is received [... ] A taxpayer can elect under Subsection 12(2.2) not to include the forgivable amount in its income by reducing its outlay or expenses in respect of which the loan is received by the same amount.” CPA Canada - CRA webinar on CEWS and more https://youtu.be/bRplWkpNX7U

🤔What does this mean?

If you received the $40,000 CEBA loan in 2020 then you will need to include the $10,000 forgivable portion of the loan as income. It is possible to use all or a portion of the funds to reduce expenses deducted in the tax return instead of classifying the entire amount as income. To do this you would have to claim a deduction under section 12(2.2) of the ITA for the amount used to reduce expenses.

💸What happens when you repay the loan?

Any amount of the loan that is not forgiven can be deducted for the year that it is repaid. This means that you may claim a deduction for the amount originally included in income or used to reduce expenses. This will reduce your tax payable in the year of repayment; for most of you, this will be 2022.
