Equitas Society

EQUITAS is a national, non-partisan organization formed to support injured Canadian soldiers suffering life-long disabilities.

EQUITAS discovered that disability support program imposed on Canadian soldiers as of 2006 - called the “New Veterans Charter” - does not provide the same level of compensation and benefits awarded under workers’ compensation programs across this country. It has unacceptable deficiencies when compared with the pension and disability support program in effect until five years ago. Because the New V

On October 4th, 2014, a statue was unveiled in New Westminster, British Columbia which commemorated what is perhaps the most famous and iconic picture of the Second World War in Canada. We’re speaking of course about Claude Dettloff’s “Wait For Me Daddy”, which made the cover of the extremely popular LIFE magazine. It would propel Jack Bernard and his young son Warren “Whitey” Bernard to fame, the latter going on to appear personally during national War Bond drives.
The families of these brave Canadian soldiers who went off to war in 1940 were Heroes of the Homefront.

On October 4th, 2014, a statue was unveiled in New Westminster, British Columbia which commemorated what is perhaps the most famous and iconic picture of the Second World War in Canada. I’m speaking of course about Claude Dettloff’s “Wait For Me Daddy”, which made the cover of the extremely popular LIFE magazine. It would propel Jack Bernard and his young son Warren “Whitey” Bernard to fame, the latter going on to appear personally during national War Bond drives. But whatever became of the others in that photograph? Who were they and what were their stories? My grandfather, Rifleman Joseph John Bodner, was the man in line directly behind Jack Bernard, and I’d like to share with you now his story.

Grandpa, who went by “Joe” to those that knew him, was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1905, to Hungarian immigrants. He married his first wife there, but unfortunately, she wouldn’t survive the birth of their first child, leaving him a young widower. He left his son in the care of his mother’s family, and then decided to forge a new life out west on the prairies. He settled in the town of Lestock, Saskatchewan, where he met and married my grandmother. Neither a fan of the prairie weather extremes, they picked up stakes and went further west, ultimately settling in the community of Mission, located in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, where they rented a farm on which to raise their growing family. VTN extends our condolences to the family, friends and veteran community on the loss of Pte. Jess Larochelle. Larochelle was awarded the country's second highest decoration for bravery in Afghanistan, but veterans lobbied for him to receive the Victoria Cross for his heroism in 2006. Larochelle passed away on Aug. 31, 2023.

Oldest Canadian Forces Veteran, Reuben Sinclair, Has Died at Age 112

Reuben Sinclair was born on Dec. 5, 1911, in Lipton, Sask. From a young age, he displayed a strong sense of patriotism and a desire to serve his country. At age 31, Reuben joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942, embarking on a military career spanning several decades. After retiring from the Canadian Forces, Reuben Sinclair continued to lead a life of service. He remained involved in veteran organizations, advocating for the rights and well-being of his fellow service members. Reuben’s commitment to his community extended beyond his military service, as he dedicated his time and efforts to various charitable causes. His remarkable longevity and service to his country garnered widespread recognition and respect. He symbolized resilience, courage, and patriotism, inspiring generations of Canadians. His legacy will undoubtedly remind us of the sacrifices made by those who have served in the Canadian Forces.

We join Reuben Sinclair’s family, and a grateful nation to remember a life of service to his country.

The annual Canadian Walk for Veterans is hosted by One Veteran Society and invites Canadians to walk shoulder to shoulder in recognition of our military, veterans and first responders. Their primary goal is to provide an opportunity for Canadians to learn about the challenges of coping with life after service.

When a member serves in the military, the entire family serves as well. Families play a critical role in enhancing the well-being of military personnel and Veterans, particularly those with service-related health conditions. Constant awareness of the potential dangers faced by their serving parent, spouse, or child, caring for members or Veterans with service-related conditions, geographic moves and transitioning out of military life all present challenges and require sacrifices by members of military families. The 2023 Canadian Walk For Veterans pays tribute to these “Heroes of the Homefront”.

Please join the CSMFRC on September 24 at Rotary park, in showing our support to the“Heroes of the Homefront” in our community. This year, net proceeds from the 2023 Canadian Walk For Veterans will go toward supporting the valuable work of Military Family Resource Centers that are situated in regions where in-person events are held. Military Family Resource Centers are essentially the heart of their military communities and their goal is to build strong, resilient individuals, families and communities.
