Some of you have met Kayleigh. If not, this is a bit about her.
Kayleigh has been at the clinic for 13 years….Yes we know she doesn’t look old enough! She has a master’s degree in physiotherapy and remains as passionate and interested as she did all those years ago.
When not at the clinic she has a busy life with her family….. including 4 children.
She is a keen Newcastle supporter. We try to balance out the football in the clinic and get a wide spread of support and reality.
She enjoys holidays to far away places and Malaysia is her next one. She has a friendly, bubbly nature and loves meeting and talking to people.
She has eclectic taste in tv programmes from, Bridgeton, to Outlander to The Apprentice.
She loves Curries and spicey food and loves to bake.

Golf Related Injury
Golf Related InjuryATTENTION ALL GOLFERS
Golf requires much more athletic ability than many imagine.
Golf is a sport with many health and wellbeing benefits. A reported 60 million people of all ages play golf across the world, sometimes into their 80s and 90s.

The health benefits have been widely reported in recent years with an 18 hole round amounting to 6-8 km of walking, requiring over 8,000-12,000 steps and a calorie burn of 1,500.

Golf Related InjuryHowever, golf can be very demanding; requiring strength, endurance, explosive power, flexibility and athletic ability to perform a movement that produces some of the fastest club head and ball speeds of any sport.

The effect of these repeated large forces on the body can lead to many different types of golf related injury, which are often specific to certain areas and sides of the body in golfers, depending on their lead side.

Much research has been done on the types and likelihood of injuries experienced by golfers with the main areas of the body prone to injury being the lower back, shoulder, elbow, wrist and hips.

Lower back injuries – Non-specific low back pain (NSLBP) What is it?
Golf Related InjuryLower back injuries account for roughly 30% of all golfing injuries, with poor technique and lack of flexibility in the mid spine and hips possible causes. Often it presents as an aching and discomfort on moving into certain positions and doing certain activities. However, the soreness and stiffness that people often present with is called ‘non specific’ as it is not usually clear which structure is causing the problem/pain.

How does physiotherapy treat this type of condition?
Trying to remain active and avoiding extended periods of rest is important in people with NSLBP. Whilst it may be a good idea in the very initial stages of the problem to reduce or avoid significant movements or activities that aggravate the symptoms, it is a good idea to keep mobile and try to do stretches and exercises that relieve the symptoms and promote normal movement. These are often specific to each individual and your physio will discuss the best options for you. Often in the initial phases the use of heat through hot packs and baths can help as well as manual therapy treatments, soft tissue massage, TENS and advice on the best ways to lift, bend, sit and move in out of the car and bed.

Shoulder injury –
Golf Related InjuryRotator cuff injury The shoulder is a complex joint and there is a large range of injuries that can occur within it and its structures. We will concentrate on the rotator cuff.

What is it?
The rotator cuff is a group of 4 muscles in the shoulder that are involved in movements and control of the shoulder joint. There are two main causes of injury to this structure, acute trauma and degeneration. The amount of stress needed to cause an injury to the rotator cuff tendon will often depend on factors such as the person’s age, general health and underlying condition of the tendon prior to the stress elicited on the tissue. Tears can occur from injuries such as a fall onto the arm, sudden lifting or rapid movement of the arm (such as in the golf swing) or deceleration of the club head suddenly when unexpected (hitting a tree root or getting the club head stuck in thick rough). Repetitive movements of the golf swing combined with poor technique and/or flexibility and control issues can lead to injuries to the shoulder and rotator cuff.

How does physiotherapy treat this type of condition?
The type of injury, its severity and stage will affect the physiotherapy management of the condition and the time of recovery. TENS, manual therapy techniques that can help with pain relief. The aim of physiotherapy will be to return optimum function and control to the shoulder complex through structured exercises rehabilitation. Physiotherapists often use various techniques to also help in the treatment of shoulder injuries. Advice on ergonomics, activity and lifestyle can help identify ways to reduce positions and aggravating factors that may slow the recovery or worsen the injury.

Conclusion
To conclude, golf requires much more athletic ability than many imagine and the consequences of this mean many people suffer injuries through poor general conditioning, lack of warm up, poor technique and practice and playing habits. But with regular conditioning, improvement in technique, warm ups and structured practice the improvements in a golfer’s performance and reduction in injuries can be significant.

We can help you with this as well as provide you with effective treatment should you suffer with any injuries.

What to expect in your first appointment –
The minimum standard
Please take time to ask yourself these questions. Do the answers compare with your own?
Have I ever been to a physio before?

👉 No, never even thought of going, especially a private one.

Why have I never been to a physio before?
👉 thought didn’t cross my mind.
👉🏼 doctor referred me to NHS but I got better before the session became available.
👉🏼 physios are for sports people.
👉🏽 scared of going. Don’t really know what to expect.
👉🏾 it’s not my priority. I am under a GP and consultant, how would a physio help me differently?
👉🏿 I am not ill or have a problem. I would just like a relaxing massage.

How am I feeling about attending a session?
👉 nothing…just going through the motions.
👉🏼 scared and worried
👉🏽 apprehensive and nervous
👉🏾 intrigued and curious
👉🏿 excited and eager (haha)

Why am I feeling this about attending a session?
👉 I need to do this so I can progress to consultant level and get my replacement.
👉🏼 they may find something bad or sinister, surely this pain means I have the worst thing imaginable.
👉🏽 they are going to look at my body! MY BODY!
👉🏾 haven’t got a clue what to expect. What will I have to do? What do I have to say? Will I have homework? What happens during the time I am there?
👉🏿 just can’t wait to find out what the issue is or what I could do about it. This could actually help my life in a lot of ways that I may not have thought of. Getting back to the things I enjoy or start something new!

What to expect from a typical initial assessment?
✅ the initial appointment lasts 1 hour.
✅ normally this is broken down into separate parts: subjective history of the client (approximately 15 to 20 mins), objective assessment of the body part concerned (15 to 20 mins) and lastly the management/treatment (15 to 20 mins).
✅ each stage informs the next. So it should all make sense and tie together. For example: if you attend with a history of going over on your ankle, and then the ankle is swollen and sore, then the resulting management and treatment would address the pain and swelling at the ankle….not a manipulation at your neck.
✅ you would be expected to expose the area involved. This area only, so no need to remove underwear. It maybe the case that changing into shorts maybe better.
✅ your dignity, respect and confidence/confidentially are always maintained.
✅ a thorough medical history will be asked in the subjective history as specific other illnesses can impact on others.
✅ please do not feel offended if specific sensitive questions are asked. They are asked for a reason.
✅ you are in control at all times. If something is uncomfortable please say! No pain, no gain is scientifically flawed in the main. This includes assessment and treatment.
✅ you will be listened to.

What will not happen in an assessment?
❌ you are laughed at, judged and insulted.
❌ you are made to do something that is out of your comfort zone or out of your control.
❌ you are ignored.
Please take note that:
👌Physio is for everyone not just sporty ones.
👌Physio may not be your initial ‘go to’ for a relaxing massage, but we are more than qualified!

The folklore surrounding intervertebral disc injury has inspired some wildly descriptive and unhelpful language.
'Slipped' disc wins by a mile, but you can also 'blow' a disc,
'bulge' a disc, 'pop' a disc, even say l've 'got' a disc. We once heard someone say that they had 'mulched' a disc! You could use more medical terms and say you have a ruptured, herniated or pr*****ed disc. Googling images of prolapse is definitely not helpful!

This is a fantastic short blog from a few years back where David Butler discussed unhelpful language and some useful retorts.

MOVEMENT!🏃‍♀️

People sometimes get scared😱, switch off😒, or point blank write it off 😡 when the word exercise is mentioned. But movement on the other hand doesnt quite have the same drop out rate! 😀.

When you mention exercise what do you think? Image of sweaty pits, red face, stitches, exhaustion🥵? Or image of relaxation, revitalisation, re-vigoration😊? Generally most would say the former. Doesnt have the appeal to some and i can understand why, not a great image. But movement is different. When we say movement it doesnt sound as energetic. It could be sit to stand to go to make yourself a drink or doing the hoovering. It could be going out for a stroll along the street🚶‍♀️, it doesnt have to be a marathon or 100m sprint 😜.

We are designed to move as living and breathing organisms. We need to move to survive.....even if it is to take a drink. Move to the front door to pick up the lockdown delivery. Or move to change position! We get sore just not moving. No one can tell me that you can sit through a full film without as much as moving something!? 😆. Or that long car journey where your bum starts not to feel like your own anymore! You cannot wait to pull over and get out the thing to move!

We need to move! It is as simple as that. It can be the smallest or biggest of movements. It can be as complicated as you make it! It can be to music or sound, it can be in silence (organising your thoughts and listening to the world around you), it can be simply putting the clothes away, emptying the dishwasher, putting the clothes on the line. Its all movement.

The aim daily is to move a little, and to move frequently. If you dont use it, you loose it.

Be sensible out there everyone, and move a little!

The Truth About Pain and Injury
(A Biopsychosocial Approach)

Are you a practitioner working with people with pain and injury?

Do you find that treatments such as joint manipulation and mobilisation, soft tissue techniques, massage, electrotherapy, acupuncture, core stability etc. often only provide patients with short-term relief from their pain and symptoms, or no relief at all?

Would you like to learn more about why this is and how the latest pain science can be applied in any clinical situation to help us treat pain and injury much more effectively and successfully, and would you like to learn this at your own pace?

If the answer is yes, then this course has been created and produced for you.

There is nothing else, like this course!

There are no other clinician centred courses that utilise high-quality evidence-based pain science and its practical clinical application to the level and depth, that is evident throughout the ‘Truth About Pain and Injury’.
Rooted in contemporary pain science based on research work by Steve Robson including his published work co-authored with Louis Gifford

Human pain is not simple! Pain is never just a result of something ‘going wrong’ with a joint, muscle, tendon, bone, or ligament. Nor is it a manifestation of weak, tight, or ‘knotted’ muscles. It is also not a series of simple signals that run from the body’s tissues up nerves registering as pain in the brain.

Pain involves the ever-changing complex interplay of factors such as our genes, immune responses, nerves, injured, and uninjured, body, tissues, thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and memories. It involves sociological and cultural factors, including our environment, family, life, and social upbringing. We could think of pain as the emergent perception of our biological, psychological, and sociological state, or put a little more simply, pain is a biopsychosocial experience.
