Studies have found that it takes a person an average of 10 years to seek treatment after first noticing a change in their hearing.

This is often due to their hearing changing so gradually that they are unaware of the severity or that their hearing loss is only partial. Another reason is that only few people have their hearing tested routinely either at work or to monitor an existing treated hearing loss.

The cochlea contains microscopic hairs (hair cells) that pick up vibrations or movement in the inner ear which are passed onto the brain as electric signals. ⚡️

The hair cells are arranged in order of frequency (pitch) along the basilar membrane. Higher pitched sounds stimulate hair cells in the outermost part of the cochlea, whereas lower pitches stimulate hair cells in the inner most parts.

At birth, it is estimated that the human cochlea contains around 15,500 of these hair cells! 👶

Over time these hair cells become damaged due to noise exposure, viruses or infections leading to hearing loss.

👂Two ears are better than one…👂

Having two ears enables us to work out where different sounds come from in our environment. This is called ”Sound Localisation”.

If you have a hearing loss in one ear, it becomes difficult to determine the location of a sound and sometimes these sounds can be missed entirely.

The brain also uses signals from both ears to process the sound more effectively over unwanted background sounds 🧠

This binaural hearing ability heightens our sensitivity to changes in pitch or volume, allowing us to hear better in noise. When we have a hearing loss, this ability is compromised, and we struggle to hear in noisy places like restaurants, cafes or in crowds.

Your ears are for more than just hearing alone.

The inner ear contains three small loops above the cochlea called the semi-circular canals. They are positioned at right angles to each other. These are responsible for our balance and helps the brain to understand where you are positioned in space.

The canals contain a fluid called endolymph. When you move your head, the flow of endolymph changes direction and/or speed. These changes are detected by sensory receptors in the ampullae and are sent to the brain to be processed. The brain then makes positional changes to the body to help you stay balanced.

It is estimated that 1 in 6 people in the UK have some degree of hearing impairment.

Studies have found that cognitive decline can be managed more effectively when hearing loss is detected and treated early with hearing aids. 🦻

There is evidence to suggest that those untreated mild hearing loss are twice as likely to develop dementia than someone without a hearing impairment. Further to this, those with an untreated moderate hearing loss are at three times the risk.

Did you know that it’s just as important to have a Hearing Screening Test as it is to have your other regular tests like an Eye Test for example.

Hearing loss affects around 17% of the general population. Although older adults are the more common recipients of hearing loss, there's a growing epidemic of hearing problems among adolescents and teens, thanks to their love of loud music and the propensity to wear personal sound devices like ear buds.

The Importance of Hearing Loss Tests:-

Hearing problems can rapidly decline or sneak up on you.
The first sign is often difficulty hearing high frequencies and making out what someone's saying when there's lots of background noise or, sometimes, ringing in the ears. Left untreated, hearing loss often worsens, and in some cases, leads to depression, anxiety or feelings of social isolation and even dementia.
Needless to say, it's just as important to get your hearing checked as it is to monitor your visual acuity, blood pressure and other health parameters.

Most guidelines recommend getting screened for hearing loss beginning at age 50, assuming you're otherwise healthy and have no known hearing problems.

Some experts believe screening should begin at a younger age due to the increasing incidence of hearing impairment in adolescents and teens. If you work around heavy machinery or in an environment where you're exposed to loud noise, testing should begin earlier, and anytime you have symptoms of hearing loss, get evaluated as soon as possible.
