The tiger stripes are rendered as dynamic, spiraling patterns that seem to swirl and pulsate with an intense, almost kinetic energy. They give an impression of raw, primal energy which is contrasted with the ethereal, ghostly forms of birds soaring against a bright blue sky.

The exhibition sees the launch of a new book 'Kensa's Encyclopedia Of Animals' 我的動物圖鑑 by Kensa Hung which contains 234 pages of the artist's works over the past 16 years. The chapters are categorised into mullusks, arthropods, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. They include paintings, sketches, comics, seal carvings, illustrations, ceramics, wood carvings, seal carvings, k**b carving, netsuke, designs, costume, and props making.

The book is currently available for purchase in the gallery.

About the curator.
May Fung is the founder of Art and Culture Outreach, a cultural organisation housed in Foo Tak Building, Wan Chai and Videotage, both in Hong Kong. She was the former school principal of the HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity and is a seasoned cultural worker and video artist whose own work is held in the collection of M+ Hong Kong.

Fung remarks, “When I first came across this batch of paintings created by Kensa Hung, I saw different animals in strange colours living in bizarre spaces. It was a mental shock to me.”

馮美華是位於香港灣仔富德樓文化組織艺鵠和錄映太奇的創辦人。她曾任香港兆基創意書院校長，也是一位經驗豐富的藝文工作者和錄像藝術家，其作品被香港M+收藏。

馮美華表示：「當我初次遇上洪忠傑這批畫作時，看到不同的動物處於不同的怪異空間和牠們的異樣色調，我腦袋產生了震盪，即時聯想到隱喻性的意義。」

Introducing artist Kensa Hung.
Kensa Hung (b. 1993, Hong Kong) graduated from the Hong Kong Institute of Contemporary Culture Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity in 2012. With a background in Chinese calligraphy and stone carving and a passion for the vernacular, Hung's multi- and cross-disciplinary creative practice spans painting, illustration, graphic design, arts education, and stage production. He is also a great appreciator of nature, with a specific interest in wildlife. Most recent exhibitions include ‘Urban Species’ at MUSTHAVEKEYS, Hong Kong (2023), ‘Tiger A(r)m Strong Biennale – The Tailed Scar’ at the HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity Gallery, HK (2023), and 'Wonder-Verse: Artzioneer Metaverse Experiential Space' at K11 Art Mall, HK
(2022).

“Biology was once my area of greatest academic interest. I was captivated by the taxonomic classification of organisms based on their evolutionary relationships, committing the details to memory with a fervent enthusiasm," says artist Kensa Hung.

洪忠傑（生於 1993 年）2012 年畢業於香港兆基創意書院。擁有中國書法和石雕的背景，對本土語言充滿熱情，他的創作實踐涵蓋繪畫、插畫、平面設計、藝術教育和舞台製作等多學科領域。他也是大自然的狂熱愛好者，對野生動物特別感興趣。2017 年出版《靜水畫集選譯》。最近的展覽包括「都市物種」，香港 MUSTHAVEKEYS（2023 年），老虎巖雙年展 - 「缺口長出了尾巴」， 香港兆基創意書院展覽廳（2023 年）與及「虛實幻境—Artzioneer 元宇宙體驗空間」， 香港 K11 art space（2022年)

藝術家洪忠傑表示：「曾經最喜歡的科目是生物，很迷戀把生物按照其演化關係分門別類，如數家珍。」

The composition of Emily Allchurch's ‘Towers of Babel Hong Kong’ (2024) takes inspiration from English artist and architect Joseph Gandy's 1836 painting Comparative Characteristics of Thirteen Selected Styles of Architecture, a survey of different cultural and historical architectural styles stacked in a layered elevation. In her re-imagining for the territory of Hong Kong today, Allchurch presents three soaring towers cast in the golden hour light before dusk, placed in front of a characteristically Hong Kong mountainscape, with the towers of Shenzhen rising hazily in the distance.

The digital collage recreates woodblock print from Hiroshige’s masterpiece, ‘One Hundred Famous Views of Edo’ (1856-58), forming a contemporary perspective using Allchurch’s own photographs taken in Shizuoka Prefecture.

Allchurch received a travel grant from a-n to tour the UK and photograph examples of neo-classical architecture which she could then use as a kit of parts to digitally construct Soane’s ‘unbuilt’ projects to appear as though they had in fact been built. These composite buildings have been placed in a hybrid Arcadian landscape comprised of numerous English gardens (from Stourhead to Castle Howard), through to the rugged mountains of Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh and Scafell Pike in the Lake District.

‘Italian Style Town (after Carpaccio)’ (2020), is based upon Carpaccio’s ‘The Disputation of St. Stephen’ (1514), from the Pinacoteca Brera in Milan. The composition, with its clearly delineated foreground and background setting, lends itself perfectly to a contemporary juxtaposition of Venice with the 19th century Italian Concession in Tianjin, Hebei Province. A 16th century Palladian portico in Venice leads you through to Marco Polo Square in Tianjin. Built by Italian architects in 1902, the resulting architecture in the concession is a fascinating pastiche that comes with the patina a century bestows. Created before the Covid-19 pandemic, the piece is an exploration of former trade links and modern-day tourism in both places.

In stark contrast, ‘The Lion & the Phoenix (after Carpaccio)’ (2020), which recreates Carpaccio’s ‘Healing of the Possessed Man’ (1496), from the Accademia Gallery in Venice, presents an empty setting, devoid of people – a direct response to being made during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent global lockdowns. Carpaccio’s bustling portrait of life around the Rialto Bridge is exchanged for a photomontage of Venice and Fenghuang (often cited as the ‘Venice of the East’) on opposite sides of the water. In both cities the shutters are down, tables and chairs are stacked, and tourist boats tied up. Draped from a Venetian balcony is the now emblematic rainbow banner, Andra Tutto Bene, (Everything will be OK). The title of the piece refers to the symbol of Venice, the Lion, and the symbol of Fenghuang, the Phoenix, the latter offering a suggestion of hope, that, just like the immortal mythological bird that cyclically regenerates, so we too will re-emerge from this challenging period.
