FLOODING: DTSG SERVES ABATEMENT NOTICE TO OWNERS OF ILLEGAL STRUCTURES / SHANTIES ACROSS THE STATE.

The Delta State Government in the last one week commenced serving abatement notices to all owners of illegal structures and shanties including containerised shops around the flood prone areas of the state as predicted by NIMET.

Chairman of the Delta State Task Force on Environment Hon. Sylvester Oromoni disclosed that these illegal structures and shanties including containerised shops were directly constructed/placed in the pathway of drainages and canals around the flood prone areas of the state thereby blocking the free flow of water during rainfall.

The Chairman explained that perennial flooding being experienced in some parts of the State was not natural but ‘Man-Made Disaster’ due to the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into both primary and secondary water channels by members of the public.

While stressing that the present administration is spending much on infrastructural development which includes clearing of drainages and canals across the State, Oromoni said there is a need for an ‘Attitudinal Change’ from members of the public to support the government in securing the environment.

He implored owners of such illegal structures, shanties and containerised shops around the affected areas including those who erected unapproved structures to abate all or have them demolished by the Task Force.

Oromoni who seeks for a total compliance and maximum cooperation from the people, however, advised environmental abusers around the area to relocate as anyone arrested would be immediately charged to court for prosecution.

COVID-19: Another bakery sealed for violating face mask order in Delta

The Delta State Taskforce on Environment on Friday sealed a famous bakery in Ekpan Uvwie Local Government Area for non compliance with government directives on COVID-19 prevention.

Chairman of the State Taskforce on Environment, Honourable Sylvester Oromoni, said the bakery was closed "temporarily" because workers were producing bread without putting on face mask.

Represented by the Coordinator Central and South Senatorial districts, Comr. Kingsley Iweka, Oromoni also explained that the bakery workers who always have first touch on breads before consumption refused to heed to the Governor's directive after well publicised announcement and warning for compulsory use of face mask.

"Early this month, Government of Delta state under the quarantine act said that "Anybody arrested for not wearing face mask would be placed on 14 days isolation at the person's own cost".

"We have observed with dismay the flagrant disobedience to the government directives which made it compulsory for everybody to always put on a face mask when moving around within the State to mitigate the spread of the deadly Coronavirus.

"Commercial vehicles and motorcycles are still in the habit of overloading their vehicles with passengers, thereby, disobeying the directive on social/physical distancing which is capable of jeopardizing the efforts of the government in the war against COVID-19 pandemic.

"Let me caution that people should not attempt to forfeit their liberty by being arrested and taken to isolation centre for not wearing a face mask.”

In another development, the State Taskforce also marked an ongoing building project built at the centre of Toka close, off W***y street, Warri.

According to Oromoni, "For some time now, the lax enforcement of environmental laws had seen many businesses erect illegal and rickety structures that encroached on pedestrian sidewalks and streets thereby obstructing the smooth flow of traffic and defaced the environment. The newly created Taskforce will help restore the aesthetics of our environment," Oromoni stressed.

When it rains, street drains help to keep City neighborhoods from flooding. When leaves collect in gutters and block these drains, water can back up and cause ponding that slows or stops traffic and can even flood yards and homes. While autumn is when leaves are most likely to collect in drains, it can happen at any time of the year. Just like what we saw at Ovie palace road by the entrance from effurun sapele road.
The State environmental Taskforce Chairman and his team work hard to maintain all of the City’s drainage infrastructure, including storm drains on streets. But with tens of thousands of drains spread all across the City, we need your help too. You can help prevent flooding by paying attention to what’s happening with the drains on your block. A few small maintenance actions on your property can also prevent stormwater from ponding.

Keep leaves and debris out of drains

Avoid piling yard waste like fallen leaves and sticks in your yard, where it could wash into City drains. Keep it in a yard waste bin or other container and register with the PSP operators in your area.
Use a rake or broom to remove leaves and debris from the tops of storm drains, and then place the material in your yard waste cart.
If the drain is still clogged after you’ve removed the debris, call our drainage problem hotline the line above to report it.
If an inlet or street drain appears to be blocked by debris, try to safely clear a channel to provide a path for the runoff. If the drain cannot be cleared, or if the cause of the blockage or flooding .

Clean the gutters and drainage downspouts attached to your roof twice a a month Just one wind or rainstorm can clog a well-flowing drainage system.
Inspect for leaks or damage to rain gutters that could cause a flat roof to flood.
Direct flows from downspouts away from your foundation, without discharging flows to adjacent properties.
Never discharge water over the edge of a steep hill.
Maintain your drainage systems

Maintaining the drainage system on private property is the owner's responsibility.

Check your property’s drainage system. This is especially important on commercial properties that have catch basins or other drainage systems. Maintaining these systems is the property owner's responsibility.
The best way to find out what’s in your pipes is to ask a professional to “video inspect” your underground drainage system.
If you have a driveway that leads down from the street, be sure to clear the drain at the bottom of the slope.
If you live at the base of a hill or on a cliff, ensure that drainage and retaining walls are properly functioning.
Respect the City’s drainage system

Don't put grass clippings, leaves or other debris into any of the drains, ditches, creeks, culverts, gutters or ravines in the City.
Do not store furniture or other items like firewood, fuel tanks, containers and loose items in your yard, as floodwaters can wash these items into culverts and cause flooding.
It is against the law to dump or to allow any material to enter the drainage system, as it leads to blockages. To report illegal dumping, call 08032611781. This method is yielding a high result now in Agbor.

Water is the most common cause of unstable slopes, mudslides and erosion. Check your property for signs of earth movement, such as leaning trees, or cracks in the soil or sidewalks.
Preventative planting can also help reduce the chance of a mudslide or flooding. However, avoid planting over side sewers that could create problems from plant roots in the future. Together we can make Delta State clean.
