A investigação conduzida por um mestrando da Universidade Nova de Lisboa analisou as (diferentes) medidas sanitárias adotadas por Portugal e pela Suécia durante a crise da covid-19. Na sua tese, Gonçalo Pessoa conclui que as autoridades de saúde portuguesas ficaram ‘reféns’ da influência de vários stakeholders – como as farmacêuticas, os media, e a Organização Mundial de Saúde –, ao passo que a Agência de Saúde da Suécia conseguiu manter a independência do poder político e seguir as evidências científicas disponíveis – assegurando, ao mesmo tempo, o respeito pelos direitos, liberdades e garantias da população.

Researchers discovered that the anesthesia drug propofol induces unconsciousness by disrupting the brain's balance between stability and excitability, leading to increasingly unstable brain activity.

Using a novel technique to analyze neuron activity, they found that propofol's inhibition of neurons causes the brain to become overly excited, ultimately losing consciousness.

Umbilical Cord Milking Poses No Neurodevelopmental Risks

Umbilical cord milking (UCM), a technique involving the squeezing of the umbilical cord toward the infant before clamping, is safe for newborns.

The study evaluated 971 children from ten U.S. medical centers, focusing on their communication, motor skills, problem-solving, and social abilities.

Results showed that children who underwent UCM exhibited no increased neurological challenges compared to those who received early cord clamping.

This research underscores the potential of UCM to enhance neonatal health without additional costs, especially beneficial in settings with limited resources.

Infant Microbiomes Dance to a Circadian Rhythm

Contrary to prior beliefs, the study, which involved 210 infants, revealed that dietary influences, including the type of infant formula, play a lesser role in shaping the microbiome than the process of aging itself.

Through meticulous analysis, the researchers observed that despite varying diets, all infants exhibited a gradual increase in microbial diversity, with notable rhythmic fluctuations in microbiome species over 24-hour cycles.

This pioneering research not only highlights the minimal impact of diet on early microbiome development but also provides the first evidence of an innate circadian rhythm within gut bacteria, independent of external environmental cues, suggesting a fundamental biological mechanism that may offer advantages in human gut colonization.

Altered Brain pH Linked to Cognitive Disorders

A new study involving 131 researchers from 105 labs worldwide uncovers altered brain pH and lactate levels as consistent features across various animal models of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, marking a significant advance in our understanding of these conditions.

This extensive research across 109 strains of mice, rats, and chicks, identifies energy metabolism dysfunction—specifically, changes in brain pH and lactate levels—as a common denominator in conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, epilepsy, and Alzheimer's disease.

Key findings include the discovery that about 30% of animal models showed significant alterations in brain pH and lactate levels, linking these changes to environmental factors and cognitive impairments, particularly in working memory.

This study paves the way for novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies targeting energy metabolism, offering hope for more effective treatments for cognitive impairments across a spectrum of neuropsychiatric conditions.
