University of Michigan Family Medicine
Family medicine residents and faculty from across the state gathered to discuss compelling topics at the recent Michigan Family Medicine Research Day last week. Our research teams delved into racial disparities in newborn drug testing; youth perspectives on healthcare accessibility, family physicians' attitudes about psychedelic-assisted therapy and more.
Brown University will be hosting Drs. Paul Chandanabhumma, Lauren Oshman, and Justine Wu next week to discuss their important study in anti-racism.
Join them from 4-5pm EDT on May 30 to discuss The Equity in Newborn Drug Screening Study: How Family Medicine Teams Can Mobilize for Change with Antiracist Methods & Practices.

Dr. Jones to the rescue!
Dr. Beth Jones was recognized with a Citizen’s Citation for her heroic, life-saving work. She and Deputy Darlene Warner provided intensive CPR on a spectator at a children’s event. Last week the Oakland County Sheriff's office celebrated them. Dr. Jones would be one of the first people we'd want around in an emergency and we're so glad she's being recognized!
🌍 Today, we celebrate World Family Doctor Day! 🩺 Let's take a moment to recognize the incredible dedication and care provided by family doctors around the globe. Thank you for being the heart of healthcare in our communities. ❤️
We had the best day connecting with middle school students at the Youth Summit at the Big House yesterday. Sharing our passion for family medicine and doing POCUS demos made for the best day!

Join us at STFM to honor Dr. Kent Sheets and to celebrate the launch of the Kent J. Sheets, Ph.D. Family Medicine Education Fund.
U-M Family Medicine Reception
In honor of Kent J. Sheets, Ph.D.
Sunday, May 5, 2024
6:00 – 8:30 p.m.
Santa Monica A Conference Room
The Westin Bonaventure, LA
Kent J. Sheets, Ph.D., a staunch supporter of family medicine education and STFM“celebrity,” joined our faculty in 1982. He advanced to the rank of professor and served as Director of Educational Development. Throughout his 38 years at U-M, Kent made a positive impression on everyone who had the privilege to work with him, both at U-M and throughout the wider family medicine community. He passed away unexpectedly following surgery in March 2020, days into the pandemic shutdown.
The University of Michigan Department of Family Medicine has established the Kent J. Sheets, Ph.D. Family Medicine Education Fund in his memory. The fund will support initiatives and programs related to medical student, resident, fellow and faculty education in the Department of Family Medicine. This could include: the FDI program, FMIG activities, residency bootcamp, sending students to STFM and AAFP conferences, and more.
Our family physicians do so much to support our communities. Thank you to Hope Clinic for celebrating the amazing Dr. Fenske!
She adds that she would be very grateful for individuals to volunteer with her if you have interest.
Did you know that our Board members are volunteers too?
Dr. Jill Fenske volunteers BOTH on our Board, and as a clinician! Wow!
Dr. Fenske says, "Volunteering as a board member and a family physician in the medical clinic inspires me, and reminds me of the reasons I felt called into the medical profession. I love practicing medicine at Hope Clinic within an integrated care framework, and it's rewarding to share my perspective as a physician volunteer at our board meetings. It's exciting to see the ways that Hope Clinic has grown throughout my time on the board and I'm very excited about the future!
P.S. - We need more medical volunteers right now - so come join us! It's rewarding, fun and a great antidote to burnout."
Welcome to the family!
Wherever your path leads you, Go Blue! 🔷
Happy from the entire Family Medicine family! We're so excited to celebrate with our graduating medical students and especially our future family physicians.

Today we celebrate Dr. Tom Bishop as he departs and heads to a new position at the University of Tennessee. Tom joined our Department of Family Medicine in June of 2017 and served within the residency administrative and wellness teams, cared for patients in an integrated behavioral science practice in Chelsea and led the program for interprofessional education at the medical school. He provided much-needed mental health first aid to colleagues throughout the pandemic. While he leaves BIG shoes to fill, we are happy he'll be closer to his children and grandchildren. Best wishes Dr. Bishop; you will be missed.

M1 Kennedy Miller packed up a U-Haul and made the 500+ mile trip from Washington D.C. to Ann Arbor to start her new life as a medical student. Kennedy had built a life she loved in D.C., falling in love with the culture and working with underserved populations.
Within a few weeks of move-in, Kennedy had the chance to meet Dr. Emad Abou-Arab, who works at Corner Health Clinic in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and she inquired about shadowing him in the field. Dr. Abou-Arab, and another fourth-year medical student, welcomed Kennedy into their day. She had the opportunity to observe and meet with patients, including those seeking gender-affirming care, an area of interest to Kennedy. The day ended with a visit to the community pantry, where the clinic provides care that extends beyond medicine to provide basic necessities.
“The word that best encapsulates my time so far at UMMS is serendipity. Though it was hard to leave DC, a series of chance interactions have catapulted me into incredible opportunities that make me feel as though I am exactly where I am supposed to be, and I am grateful for that,” said Kennedy.
