Dear Emory students, please read the above information and reach out to us with any questions or concerns you may have. We understand that this is a time of great uncertainty and fear, and we can assure you that we want to make the voting process as clear as possible. Thank you and please continue to stay safe.
We will be live streaming the first portion of the event in which we’ll discuss the actual facts of affirmative action. When the presentation is finished, we’ll turn off the cameras so that students can have a candid discussion about diversity on Emory’s campus.
Two great events this week! See you on Wednesday and Thursday!
First GBM of 2020 - Please join us this Wednesday for our first GBM of the year!
Town Hall with Jon Ossoff, US Senate Candidate - Please join us this Thursday in welcoming US Senate candidate Jon Ossoff.
We would like to express our appreciation for the Democratic members of Congress—representing Americans across the nation, from all walks of life—who voted today on the side of justice and democracy and impeached President Donald Trump.
Though many Republican lawmakers don’t seem to believe so, impeachment is never something that should be taken lightly. It is Congress’ constitutionally guaranteed tool and ultimate moral authority to hold the president accountable and protect the integrity of our democracy.
The exhaustive scope of the House’s inquiry, and the length of debate we’ve seen these past few months clearly shows the thorough and sound nature of this investigation. In light of the actions we now know the president has taken, it is clear that his impeachment is not only necessary, but the only way to show that in America no one is above the law.
Today, we saw House Republicans put party before country and continue their bad-faith opposition. Today they opposed impeachment on the grounds of a lack of facts; just months ago they opposed the impeachment inquiry—an effort to look into the facts in the first place. These same elected officials, and the party insiders working tirelessly to prop them up, have been spreading misleading, unfair, and often outright false narratives whenever possible.
Among a host of conspiracy theories that have been repeatedly disproven by Trump’s own appointees in federal agencies, they have claimed, wrongly, that the impeachment procedure we have seen thus far is somehow unprecedented; that there is no evidence for these proceedings; and, perhaps most alarmingly, that the president’s behavior is to be expected. Rep. Steve Chabot said that it would set a “dangerous precedent where impeachment becomes the norm”—Chabot helped lead the impeachment effort against President Clinton. It’s clear that House Republicans no longer care about protecting the key American ideals of democracy and justice. Today they opposed impeachment on the grounds of a lack of facts; just months ago they opposed any effort to look into the facts in the first place.
But, as much as Republicans operating under the Trump playbook like to pretend otherwise, facts are facts. So, to be clear, here is just some of what we know:
President Trump explicitly asked the president of Ukraine to launch an investigation into his political opponent, Joe Biden, making the sale of arms to Ukraine and a White House visit conditional on such an investigation.
After the phone call, when Ukraine took no such action, Trump proceeded to withhold $391 million of military aid to Ukraine—a strategic ally of the U.S.—until they “investigated corruption,” a term acknowledged by Trump aides as a code for an investigation into the Biden.
Trump openly asked China to open an investigation into Joe Biden, yet again inviting foreign interference into a presidential election. He later claimed, as he has so many things, that this request was a joke, which was not previously communicated to the Chinese government.
Trump ordered his staff not to testify, encouraging them to ignore and violate Congressional subpoenas. He denied access to documents and crucial witnesses in an attempt to hide what really happened from the American people.
Trump threatened a witness testifying against him in front of the House Intelligence Committee while she was testifying. He also publicly mocked and derided witnesses, including questioning the patriotism of a Lieutenant Colonel.
These facts show the severity of Trump’s misconduct: using his power as president for personal gain, threatening our national security and the integrity of our elections in the process. Any representative who values democracy, due process, and presidential accountability, should have supported impeachment today—and a firm majority did.
Today has shown, yet again, the importance of electing Democrats to Congress in 2020. We deserve lawmakers with integrity, who will stand up for democracy and for what’s right. We have the power to do that in 2020. Here in Georgia, we are the only state to have two open Senate seats this election season. We have a host of House seats in swing districts, and seats open in local and state government. The time for action is now.

Our nation’s gun problems are getting worse, and the thoughts and prayers being offered by far too many lawmakers with real power to change things is no longer an acceptable substitute for legislation and action. With gun violence becoming such a tragically frequent occurrence in our nation today, it’s easy to become desensitized to the injustice, brutality, and horror of our gun epidemic. But it’s important to remember that things don’t have to be this way: Whether the tragic events of the last few days have left you feeling angry, helpless, or confident that we can do better, now is a vital time to take decisive action to support common-sense gun control to make our nation safer. We’ve outlined some simple but impactful ways you can voice your concerns and make a difference below:
1. Congresswoman Lucy McBath of Georgia’s 6th District, just north of Emory, is running for re-election after her close win in 2018. McBath has been a fearless champion for gun control since her son, Jordan Davis, was shot and killed in 2016. In the House, she helped lead the passage of the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, and been a consistent advocate for gun reform. We’d urge you to donate, support, and get involved with her re-election effort so she can continue her invaluable work in Congress.

2. Get involved with some of the great organizations supporting gun control reform like the Giffords, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, Brady and Everytown for Gun Safety.
3. Call your elected representatives, at the federal, state, and local levels. Tell them how you feel, and that you want them to support increased gun control and regulation. They work for you - make sure they remember that.

4. Call on Emory to join the pledge to keep guns off college campuses.
https://keepgunsoffcampus.org/colleges-and-universities-list/
5. Run for office. The best way to get your voice heard is to make sure it’s heard on school boards, city council, the state house and beyond. Organizations like Run for Something can help you get started.
This issue should be talked about every day, not only in the aftermath of mass shootings. We need to be proactive in our efforts instead of reactive. If you’re interested in getting involved with any of the organizations/campaigns listed above, or in other ways, reach out to the Young Democrats of Emory and we’ll be happy to help you maximize your input and voice.
We have a gun violence epidemic in this country. The cause is not illusory, and neither is the solution.
We are outraged by the back to back mass shootings of this past weekend. We cannot sit around as our own citizens fall victim to gun violence due to the negligence of our own government.
The most important thing you can do is call your senators and ask them to demand that Mitch McConnell brings H.R. 8 (the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019) to the Senate floor for a vote. Below is a link to help you call your senators that includes some information about this legislation.

America does not have more mental illness than other developed nations. We don’t have more violent video games. What we have is a country awash in guns, and weak laws that allow young men contemplating violence to easily get their hands on a deadly weapon.
The Young Democrats of Emory are disgusted with the comments made by the President of the United States in the past week about four Democratic Congresswomen. These comments are racist at their core and have no place in today’s political discourse. Both at Emory and in The United States, we recognize that diversity of thought, religion, ethnicity, nationality, sexuality, gender and race is what makes America great. We stand with Congresswomen Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Democrats who are fighting for Americans every day in Congress.

Today we are remembering all the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We owe it to them to maintain a strong democracy by taking an active role through civic involvement. We hope everyone is having a restful and meaningful Memorial Day!
Last week, Georgia’s Governor Brian Kemp signed into law the most drastic bill in the country's history attacking abortion rights and women's health care.
Since then, Alabama and 14 other state legislatures have begun passing even more vindictive ‘heartbeat bills’ that place severe restrictions on a women's right to choose.
We, The Young Democrats of Emory, support the fundamental right for all women and people with female reproductive organs to access safe and legal abortions. We are outraged by these unconstitutional attacks on the right to choose. However, it isn’t enough to be angry, or to wait for the courts to intervene; we have to mobilize and act now!
1) Sign our pledge to kick the state lawmakers who voted for Georgia’s ‘heartbeat bill’ out of office in 2020: https://forms.gle/rogCUKX2SZskuCHM8
2) Call state representatives/senators, either in Georgia or in your home state if your legislature is one of the 14 introducing anti-choice legislation. Gov. Kemp’s office can be contacted here: https://gov.georgia.gov/webform/constituent-services
3) Register to vote so we can elect good, pro-choice Democrats to local, state, and federal office in 2020 and beyond. Register in GA here, or confirm your registration here: https://www.vote.org/am-i-registered-to-vote/
4) Donate, volunteer, and support groups like EMILY's List, Planned Parenthood, NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia, Access Reproductive Care-Southeast, Inc., and ACLU of Georgia.
5) Sign up to the Young Democrats of Emory mailing list to stay engaged and updated about our events in the coming academic year.
