The CCMS picnic was held on July 13 at Adams-Ricci park. We had a first reading of proposed Bylaws revisions and heard a report from the students that we sponsored to attend the International HOSA meeting in Houston, TX in June. Below, Beth Kempf of Community CARES tells us about how the medical room we provide at the Resource Center is being used and why she needs our support for a similar room in the new permanent shelter.

Many of you may recall meeting the students from the Cumberland Valley High School chapter of HOSA (Health Occupation Student Association) at our summer picnic last July. These students just completed their state competition 3/13-3/15/24 held in Lancaster, PA, presenting for an event that required creating a "Public Service Announcement" in which they created a presentation and a video message about the dangers of fentanyl. They placed 2nd in the state of PA and are qualified to present their work at HOSA’s International Leadership Conference being held in Houston Texas 6/25/24-6/30/24.

In addition to this presentation, HOSA’s International Leadership Conference is the highlight of the year for every HOSA member and advisors and includes:
• Competitive events focused on leadership, professional and technical skills
• The annual business of the international student organization of HOSA by the voting delegates
• Educational Seminars, Workshops & Exhibits presented by professional partners that provide Information about current health care issues
• An opportunity to meet people from across the globe with similar career goals
• Exciting general sessions providing recognition and opportunity for all HOSA members!

They have asked CCMS for a $1500 donation to help with the registration, room and travel costs for 3 students to attend the meeting/competition in Texas. We would love to support leadership and enthusiasm for health careers as a County Medical Society and this funding fits well with our stated Bylaws purposes: "to establish friendly interchange among physicians and with the general public; and to promote and enlighten public health and hygiene, so that the profession shall become more useful to the public in the prevention and management of disease and in prolonging and adding comfort to life. "

A motion has been made to make a $1500 donation to assist with their attendance at this conference. We are asking that you submit your vote via email by April 10.

Thank you,
Michelle Evans, Secretary

We were honored and thanked at a Safe Harbour dinner tonight. 💕

Thanks to everyone who joined us tonight for what is likely to be the first annual Cumberland County Medical Society picnic! We were joined by Dr. Domingo Alvear and wife as guests to tell us about World Surgical Foundation https://worldsurgicalfoundation.org/, which he founded . We were also joined by representatives of the Health Occupations Student Association (HOSA) from Cumberland Valley high school. After a brief business meeting where we approved our members who will serve as reps to the House of Delegates in October and even came up with a resolution to bring forward, we enjoyed a great meal and even better camaraderie!

At our meeting on July 22 we:

selected members to represent us at the house of delegates

we decided to take action on supporting safe needle exchange and on promoting the prior authorization bill to move through the legislative process.

We crafted one resolution for the house of delegates

Safe Harbour 03/31/2021

SAVE THE DATE: APRIL 29, 7pm
CCMS is in action to help promote health during the pandemic! At our last business meeting and a subsequent e-mail, we decided to make the following donations in March:
>$3000 to Central PA Food Bank. This will be distributed to various food banks throughout Cumberland County.
>$1000 to JFT - Just for Today Recovery and Veteran Support Services
This group offers safe, structured, and compassionate housing, fellowship, and recovery resources to anyone in need. https://www.jft-rvss.org/
Chosen because it addresses the op**te crisis which has increased again during the pandemic.
>$1000 to Safe Harbour
A non-profit organization that provides a continuum of housing services for the homeless of Cumberland County. https://safeharbour.org/
Chosen because of the anticipated housing crisis that will follow the expiration of federal eviction and foreclosure protections during the pandemic.

In addition, the donations to JFT and Safe Harbour have been matched, dollar for dollar, by Partnership for Better Health's "Match Madness" campaign. So each of these organizations will receive $2000.

We are still planning on having a meeting to discuss ways in which CCMS can assist the community and our members financially while keeping in line with our mission.

The most efficient way to get people vaccinated is through the network of primary care providers who already care for them. Thank you PAMED for advocating for common sense and a better plan!

Yesterday we sent a letter to Pennsylvania Acting Secretary of Health Alison Beam to seek clarification on behalf of our members that are hearing that the Pennsylvania Department of Health is cutting them out of the COVID-19 vaccine distribution plan.
