Is it too late to save your posture?

Poor posture often results from modern-day habits like working in front of your computer, slouching on your couch while watching TV, and looking down at your phone. Hours spent carrying heavy objects (like equipment at work, grocery bags, or a heavy purse) can also put your neck/shoulders at risk. If left untreated, this can lead to all of the long term side effects of poor posture (back and neck pain being the most common).

Rounded shoulders and a hunched stance may seem like they’re set in stone. You may feel like it's too late to correct them - but don't worry, there's hope!

As you can see from the image below, a forward head tilt adds a great deal of stress to your neck and shoulders. Better posture is often just a matter of changing your activities and strengthening your muscles in the right way.

Exercise should be performed through the largest pain free range of motion (ROM) without any compensation. And voila! Now you know the number one focus in all of our classes and private sessions!

Increase your strength and flexibility, enhance your balance and stability, avoid lower back pain, tone your waistline, buff your muscles and more!!!

This occurs with regular attendance of classes or private sessions with us!

Planks and sit-ups are both effective core exercises, but they target different muscles and have different benefits. Planks primarily engage the muscles in your core, including your abdominals, lower back, and obliques, as well as your shoulders, chest, and legs for stabilization. Planks help improve overall core strength, stability, and endurance. Sit-ups primarily target the re**us abdominis muscle, which is the muscle responsible for the "six-pack" appearance. While sit-ups can help strengthen this muscle and improve abdominal definition, they can also put strain on the lower back and neck if not performed with proper form.

Planks are often considered a safer and more functional core exercise compared to sit-ups because they engage multiple muscle groups and help improve overall core stability without putting excessive strain on the spine. However, incorporating a variety of core exercises, including both planks and sit-ups, can help target different muscle groups and provide a well-rounded core workout.

No matter what your hopes for a healthier, more active life are, our instructors can help you by demonstrating the stretches and movements that can have a dramatic impact on your health and well-being...no matter what your current fitness level is.

There are several ways to increase your energy level.
Even my favorite dog Nico does many of these:

1. Get enough sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to help your body recharge.

2. Stay hydrated: Dehydration can lead to fatigue, so make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

3. Eat a balanced diet: Fuel your body with a variety of nutrient-dense foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

4. Exercise regularly as my dog Nico does: Physical activity can boost your energy levels and improve your overall well-being. We need to see you at our studio several times per week!

5. Manage stress: Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or pilates/yoga to reduce stress and increase energy.

6. Limit caffeine and sugar: While these substances can provide a temporary energy boost, they can also lead to crashes later on.

7. Take breaks: If you're feeling tired, take short breaks throughout the day to rest and recharge.

8. Consider supplements: Talk to your healthcare provider about whether certain supplements, such as vitamin B12 or iron, may help improve your energy levels.

Remember that everyone's body is different, so it may take some trial and error to find the best strategies for increasing your energy level. If you continue to struggle with low energy, it's a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional.

Here are some general tips for treating back pain:

1. Rest: Avoid activities that worsen the pain, but don't stay in bed for too long as it can make the pain worse.

2. Ice and heat therapy: Apply ice packs for the first 48 hours to reduce inflammation, then switch to heat to relax muscles and improve blood flow.

3. Over-the-counter pain medications: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce pain and inflammation.

4. Exercise: Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises can help improve back pain. Consider activities like Pilates & Yoga, swimming, or walking.

5. Posture and ergonomics: Pay attention to your posture and the ergonomics of your workspace to avoid strain on your back.

If your back pain persists or worsens, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

The ideal balance between cardio and strength training can vary depending on your individual goals, fitness level, and personal preferences. However, a general guideline is to aim for a combination of both types of exercise to achieve overall fitness and health benefits.

For most people, a balanced approach might involve incorporating both cardio and strength training into your weekly workout routine. This could mean doing cardio exercises such as running, cycling, or swimming on some days, and incorporating strength training exercises that are utilized in Pilates on other days.

Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio exercise per week, along with two or more days of strength training targeting all major muscle groups. It's also important to include flexibility and mobility exercises to maintain overall physical health and prevent injury. This is why attending classes on a regular basis is so very important.

Ultimately, the ideal balance will depend on individual preferences, fitness goals, and any specific health considerations. In a private session we can create a customized plan that suits your needs.

So very important to do any movement with the correct alignment, breathing and control of your movement. This will reduce any joint or muscle pain.

Balance is important to us as humans because it helps us maintain physical and mental well-being. Physical balance allows us to move efficiently and avoid falls, while mental and emotional balance helps us manage stress, make sound decisions, and maintain healthy relationships. Achieving balance in our lives can lead to a sense of harmony, fulfillment, and overall happiness.

Unfortunately the sense of balance typically worsens with age. It can be further compromised by certain medical conditions and medications, uncorrected vision problems, or a lack of flexibility. When our balance is poor it often leads to falls, which can cause head injuries and other disabling injuries. Hip fractures, in particular, can lead to serious health complications and threaten independence. A combination of activities such as walking, strength training, and specific workouts like Pilates and Yoga can improve balance and prevent falls.

Strengthening your core muscles. It’s one of the best ways to ensure you stay active and independent as you age. That’s because your core muscles are so very important for nearly every move you make, from bending and reaching to twisting and standing.

There are several effective ways to strengthen your core muscles:

1. Plank exercises: Planks are a great way to engage your core muscles and improve strength and stability.

2. Pilates: Pilates focuses on strengthening the core muscles through a series of controlled movements and exercises.

3. Yoga: Many yoga poses and sequences are designed to engage and strengthen the core muscles.

4. Resistance training: Using resistance bands or weights can help to build strength in the core muscles.

5. Stability ball exercises: Using a stability ball can help to engage the core muscles while performing various exercises.

6. Bodyweight exercises: Exercises such as crunches, bicycle crunches, and leg raises can help to strengthen the core muscles.

As we grow older, muscle mass in the body generally shrinks, and the strength in our body declines. The process can begin sooner than you think. Sarcopenia—defined as age-related muscle loss—can begin at around age 35 and occurs at a rate of 1-2 percent a year for the typical person. After age 60, it can accelerate to 3 percent a year.
While we may think that all of these changes are due to aging alone, disuse of muscles plays a bigger role than many people realize. Studies have shown that one in every three adults ages 65 and older falls each year. But these studies also suggest that strength and power training can help reverse these effects and restore muscle function. This is why it is so important to be consistent with your exercise training with us!

When it comes to our general fitness and muscle strength, the adage is true: Use it or lose it. We know that regular exercise can improve heart health and increase strength and mobility. Unfortunately, taking weeks or months off can reverse many of those benefits.

That’s not to say that rest days are not important. It is important to take short breaks which can help you physically and mentally recharge. But it is important to avoid extending your time off for too long so that getting back on the wagon doesn’t feel too challenging.

Your muscles become used to the stress and the testosterone, the adrenaline and endorphins — all the wonderful things that circulate from exercise. When you take that away, your body will begin to see muscle loss.

If you have to travel or stay in because of bad weather, doing something is still better than nothing. Just do some activity throughout the day, take the stairs as much as you can, or better yet, set a goal to do a couple short high-intensity interval workouts.

“If you spend just a few minutes a day doing interval training, that’s sufficient to keep blood volume elevated and mitochondria relatively high. Studies have shown when you resume exercise, you can regain approximately one-half of your fitness in 10 to 14 days with moderately hard workouts.

When you think of all that your knees and hips help you do, it’s not surprising that they’re prone to injuries and other painful problems. The good news is that good, stable movement can help relieve hip and knee pain by reducing stress on the joints and promoting proper alignment and muscle balance. When the body moves in a stable and controlled manner, it can help distribute forces more evenly across the joints, reducing the risk of excessive wear and tear. Additionally, stable movement can help strengthen the muscles around the hip and knee, providing better support and stability for the joints. This can help alleviate pain and improve overall function.

In our classes/private sessions we will provide you with a safe and effective movement plan tailored to your individual needs. This will help turn those aching knees/hips into strong, stable knees/hips like you’re a kid again!

Core exercises offer a wide range of benefits, including:
1. Improved stability and balance: Strengthening your core muscles helps improve your balance and stability, making it easier to perform everyday activities and reduce your risk of injury.
2. Better posture: A strong core can help improve your posture, reducing strain on your back and decreasing the risk of developing back pain.
3. Enhanced athletic performance: A strong core is essential for optimal sports performance, helping to generate power, transfer energy between the upper and lower body, and improve agility and coordination.
4. Reduced risk of injury: A stable and strong core can help prevent injuries, especially in the lower back and surrounding muscles.
5. Improved functionality: A strong core is crucial for performing everyday activities, such as bending, lifting, and twisting, with greater ease and efficiency.
Overall, incorporating core exercises into your fitness routine can lead to improved physical performance, better posture, and a reduced risk of injury.
In our classes we always take into account your particular fitness level. We make modifications that are specially designed for people who aren't up to tackling regular core exercises, perhaps because you haven't been exercising for a while or due to an injury or health problem.

Start thinking About Stacking Your Body in a More Neutral Alignment.
While there’s no such thing as perfect posture, it is important for you to try to maintain a more neutral spine alignment by thinking about stacking your ribs over your pelvis and your diaphragm over your pelvic floor. This posture helps to reduce the amount of stress on the body. Notice how it feels; for example, do you feel different muscles are now working? You should feel fairly relaxed, as this position shouldn’t make you feel overly exhausting to hold. You can also play around with your alignment and see what works best for you as you move through different types of activities!
An exercise is at the right level if it feels challenging, but you don't feel discomfort. If you develop symptoms and they’re not immediately resolved by trying to modify the movement, it’s time to stop that exercise.

Sitting for too long can have negative effects on your health because it can lead to a decrease in physical activity, which in turn can contribute to health issues such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even mental health problems. Prolonged sitting can also lead to muscle stiffness and decreased flexibility. Fortunately, you can lower your risk of these conditions simply by carrying the laundry upstairs, dancing around the house to your favorite tune, or even standing while you talk on the phone. That's because routine movement during the day adds on to those benefits.
Coming to class on a regular basis will also be of great benefit to you!
