Unfortunately, more bad news for California!! Another insurance company, Hartford, has stopped offering new home polices in California. The list keeps growing!!! All insurance companies are waiting for a rate increase of 20-30% from the Dept of Insurance until they start quoting again. They say it is needed for them to be profitable again in California. This year and next year are going to be very difficult for all of us!!!!! Everyone will see their insurance policies increase dramatically. Our insurance company, JLV Insurance Agency, Inc., has received calls from clients from AAA, Allstate, State Farm, and Farmers Insurance who are being non-renewed. It was reported online that these companies were going to offer renewal policies on autos and homes and not new policies. For some reason, some clients are getting cancelled on their homes. Kemper Preferred Insurance, who offers auto and home policies, also announced a few months ago that they were leaving California, too. I believe that the insurance companies reviewing their current clients' policies and non-renewing older homes that they feel are a risk to their business, and the same with the auto policies. On the home applications, the underwriters at the insurance companies are asking if the client's home has had any updates since it was built. This can determine acceptance or not with the insurance companies. The types of updates they look at in a home are electrical updates, heating and cooling system updates, plumbing and drainage line updates, and a new roof on older homes.
