The mission of the Center for New Directions is to develop academic programs and courses focused in the areas of politics and public policy with the purpose of developing the leadership capacities necessary to address changing public priorities for the 21st century within neighborhoods, communities, governmental jurisdictions and nonprofit entities.

New Directions has various paid student internships available for incoming students. We welcome anyone who is interested in politics, local governments and nonprofit work.

1. The Paid Student Internship Information session: We will provide information about the Best and Brightest Student Internship ($42,500 a year) which provides a student with an opportunity to work full time at a small local jurisdiction in Colorado for two years and student internships with community non-profit organizations ($7,000 scholarship) which provides a student with an opportunity to work 10-12 hours a week for two semesters.

Paid Student Internship for the local government and community organizations.

New Directions offers various paid student internships.

1. The Best and Brightest Student Internship: This internship provides students with a paid salary ( up to $42,500) for two years while pursuing an MA program at New Directions. This year, there will be 8 counties that will open the position for the year 2020. Come to the informational session, if you are interested in this student internship. The internship information session will take place on May 9th, Thursday, at 12:30 pm, at the Political Science Department Library ( #3206).

2. Community Organization Internship: New Directions' students can apply for a paid student internship position. Selected students will receive a scholarship of $7,000 for working for a community organization for two semesters ( Fall and Spring). This year, the internship is effective as of September, 2019 and anyone who is interested in a student internship should apply for the MA program in order to be eligible.

The Best and Brightest Student Internship program is looking for a student Intern!

The Best and Brightest Student Internship is a unique opportunity for students to receive a full time salary of $42000 per year for two years, while pursuing a Master’s degree at the Center for New Directions in Politics and Public Policy in the Political Science Department at CU Denver. This internship program has been an important part of the New Directions program. As for the internship position for FY 2019 and 2010, there are 7 counties that are participating in this Best and Brightest program this year: Alamosa County, City of Brush!, Town of Eagle, City of Fountain, City of Fruita, Town of Oak Creek, City of Ouray.

New Directions is a weekend Master’s program which works for well for working professionals. Anyone who is interested in working for small local jurisdictions in Colorado or interested in local politics or politics in general should consider applying for this position!

As the application deadline is approaching fast, anyone who is interested in applying for this internship should contact Dr. Minsun Ji, [email protected] or 303- 315-1755 ASAP. The deadline is September 7, 2018 and students need to send their resume and a cover letter to Dr. Ji.

It is time to register for classes. We will have four new faculty members joining us this fall as new instructors. We are thrilled to have several new faculty members this fall: Crisanta Duran (Speaker of the CO House), Richard Male (a long time guru in social justice non-profit worlds), PJ D’amico (well-known community activist and the executive director at The Buck Foundation) and Joseph Drexler (a labor scholar and high ranking union officer). This is an excellent opportunity to learn from exceptional practitioner-scholars in our community!

Information about our upcoming classes is below.

1. PSCI 5914/4002 Community Organizing and Community Development. (Aug 25.26, Sept 8/9, Sept 29/30): Instructor-Minsun Ji

This course is a required class for all New Directions’ students, and we recommend all incoming students to take it this fall, if possible. This class is an intro class for New Directions which addresses the fundamental basics of the three program tracks of the New Directions program: local government, community-labor organizing and social economy.

2. PSCI 5024/4024 State Politics: Focus CO. (Sept 22/23, Oct. 13/14, Nov. 3/4): Instructor- Crisanta Duran, Speaker of the House

This course will be taught by Crisanta Duran, Speaker of the Colorado House, for the first time and we recommend people who are interested in public policy, legislative processes and in public leadership to take this class. It is a rare opportunity to learn from one of Colorado’s highest ranking officials.

3. PSCI 5265/4265. Social Justice and Globalization (Oct 6/7, Oct 20/21, Nov 10/11): Instructor- Richard Male/PJ D’Amico

This course will be co-taught by Richard Male and PJ D’Amico. Both are well known in social justice non-profit worlds. In this class, Richard and PJ will address issues, challenges and strategies confronting community organizers. Anyone who is interested in working for a nonprofit organization will enjoy making connections with these instructors and they will be tremendous mentors.

4. PSCI 5535/4535 Labor and Working Class Politics. (Oct. 27/28, Nov 17/18, Dec 8/9) Instructor- Joseph Drexler

This class address the history and evolving perspectives on the labor movement. This class is taught by a long time high ranking labor union officer and scholar, Dr. Joseph Drexler. Anyone who is interested in labor issues, labor union politics, workers’ empowerment or worker organizing will benefit from Dr. Drexler’s long experience in the labor movement.

In partnership with the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, the CU Denver Department of Political Science announces the availability of two-year professional-internship positions with local governments across Colorado.

Each internship pays $42,500 a year, in salary and benefits. While building career skills and professionally networking on the job, Interns will also complete a CU Denver Masters program in Politics and Public Policy.
