I am frequently asked how someone can get the cheapest insurance. With 30 years in the insurance industry, let me tell you. My answer is always the same – do not shop insurance based on price, shop on service. Let me explain.

When you go out and buy a product, any product, you can see what you are buying. For example, if you want to buy a car, you can go to the car lot, touch the car, test drive the car, look at the paint and the interior. When you go buy a shirt, you can touch the material, you can try it on, you can see the shirt.

When you go to buy insurance, you cannot touch the product. You cannot test drive insurance. You don’t get to try it on. You buy it, and then you never really know if it is any good until the time you need to make a claim. And, then, the rubber meets the road, as they say.

But, before we get to the claims process, let’s talk about buying insurance. In California, you are required to have liability insurance only. If you have financed the car, your finance company will require comprehensive insurance and collision insurance. Anything beyond that is optional, although highly recommended.

So, if I am shopping for car insurance, I may see a quote for $357 per month. That quote might include $500 deductibles for comprehensive and collision and $100,000/$300,000 liability limits. However, the uninsured motorist limits were $50,000/$100,000. If I pay $20 more per month, then my uninsured motorist limits would be $100,000/$300,000. So, for $240 per year, I am doubling my per person uninsured motorist limit and tripling it per vehicle.

Why does this matter? Because uninsured motorist coverage protects YOU. If you are involved in a crash with someone who is uninsured, or underinsured, this coverage protects you and provides you with peace of mind. However, in California, your uninsured motorist limits can never be more than your liability limits.

Now, let’s say you get this far and you are still comparing two policies. One is cheaper than the other, even though the coverages are identical. What happens if you have a crash? This is where you don’t want to get cheap on your coverage.

The insurance policy provides you a service. And this service is the claims process. Having cheap insurance, but having to fight through your entire claim is not worth any savings. When you are in a crash, whether it is your fault or not, you want to know that the insurance company will do what is right and make sure your car is fixed and your damages are paid. Saving money but getting a worse claims process is simply not worth the savings.

Please, please, please, find a local agent or broker and shop insurance based on service, not based on price.
