The Importance of Your Glutes!

Glutes are some of the most important muscle group in our body. They are not just the look good Brazilian b***y that we may think. They have super important functions. What are the glutes? They are the b***y muscles- the gluteus maximus (fondly known as glut max) helps with power and function. Those athletes with the high larger b***y will be sure to explode with force and be a great athlete. We see them mostly in tennis, baseball, basketball, gymnastics and many other sports. Body builders can sculpt a gorgeous buttocks by doing squats with great weight. Cross fit enthusiasts use the glut max to do box jumps.

But, glutes are very important in everyday activities. Such as standing up straight, getting up from a chair or toilet, and even getting up off the floor. They come in very handy when climbing a flight of stairs and if you are like me, when climbing mountains , I’m grateful that they are in strong.

The very obvious glute max gets all the attention however, the glute medius and even minimus play a very important role as well. While the glute max is in the back of your hips and we refer to it as our butt, the glute medius (and minumus) are on the side of our hips and keeps our hips level and stable. Often, weakness in these muscles will cause problems that appear to be “back” issues, but really come from where your sacrum meets your hip (pelvic) bones. This is your SI joint.

Our pelvis is the foundation of our body and all of our weight is transferred through this area. If it is unstable or weak, we can find ourselves with pain, instability, poor posture, pelvic floor issues, back pain and so much more.

Just by tightening our glutes and nodding our pelvis, the entire orientation of your spine and pelvis can change. When the glutes are weak, our spine doesn’t have a stable base of support and backpain with ensue.

If you are going to train one muscle group- The mighty Glutes should be on the top of your list. Anyone at any age or fitness level can start. You don’t even need to get out of the chair (although sitting is not good for glutes- or anything else for that matter). Just by squeezing your butt cheeks tighter, you can activate the glutes. If you are starting your training sit to stand exercises are a good one to begin with. But squats – with proper form- are the most superior method to increase strength and increase it quickly.

Bird-dog is also an excellent glute and pelvic stability exercise. Don’t stop with just the basics because strengthening along with movement is great for functional stability.

Because we do not move in just one plane- forward and backwards, DON’T forget to train your glute medius. Simple exercises for your glute medius can be clams, side-lying and lifting your leg up. You can use resistance bands while lying down or you can put a resistance band around your ankles and side walk in a partially squatted position.

There are so many exercises, but please remember the importance of them have good strength. They are not just there to look good! We need them active and strong and be functional.
