Two newly-filed lawsuits allege wrongful death, gross negligence and neglect by Simon Property Group and Allied Universal Security Services in relation to the 2022 mass shooting at Greenwood Park Mall. The cases were filed in Marion Superior Court on behalf of Rosa Gomez, who survived the shooting, and the families of Victor Gomez, Pedro Pineda and Rosa Pineda, who were killed when Jonathan Sapirman opened fire in the mall’s food court.

The complaints allege Defendants failed to take reasonable steps to prevent the shooting from occurring, and contend the Defendants routinely practice an uneven allocation of security resources based on perceived favorable demographic areas, without proper regard for the safety of patrons at all Simon-owned mall properties.

It appears no Allied personnel were in or near the mall’s food court at the time of the shooting, nor did they respond to provide aid in the minutes after Sapirman was killed by legally armed bystander Elisjsha Dicken.

Sapirman spent more than an hour in the restroom preparing to carry out the mass shooting, unchecked by security. In fact, he went entirely unnoticed on mall property as he walked past dozens of purportedly monitored cameras through mall’s parking lot, into the mall, through its food court and into the restroom. He was wearing an oversized black backpack, full and sagging, containing an ammunition vest, a Sig Sauer model 400M rifle, a Smith and Wesson M&P15 rifle, a G***k model 33 handgun, six fully loaded 5.56 magazines and two G***k 33 magazines.

FOX59 News reporting on alleged s*xual misconduct by Charles “Chuck” Jansen, a former teacher at Taylor High School and St. Joan of Arc/St. Patrick’s in Kokomo. Jansen was arrested by Indiana State Police yesterday, on a level four felony charge of vicarious s*xual gratification with a victim under 14 years of age.

Cohen & Malad, LLP's Greg Laker spoke to Fox59 about the case, saying Jansen’s alleged grooming of minors in multiple school systems over decades is all too common. Laker praised Jansen's former students for coming forward, thus protecting other students from potentially being victimized.

Lastly, he encouraged others who were impacted by Jansen to share their stories. “You don’t need to be afraid," Laker said. "You will be believed. You can speak out and people will listen.”

As the investigation into s*xual abuse by former Greenfield, Indiana childcare worker Jericho Johnson continues, there are now also allegations against a former employer. Kelley Basey, owner of Shining Stars Childcare Academy where Johnson was also employed, has been charged with failure to make a report of abuse and reckless supervision of a child.

In March 2023, at least one child reported abuse by Johnson while in his care at Shining Stars. Indiana law requires childcare workers and volunteers report suspected abuse to either police or DCS, but Basey never notified authorities.

Multiple other alleged child victims of Johnson came forward in February 2024. Those instances, related to his role as an after-school childcare worker, were reported to the Greenfield Police Department and resulted in Johnson's arrest.

The Lake County, Indiana, judge overseeing it ordered the sides to finalize agreements for turning over thousands of pages of internal records as part of a legal process known as discovery.

Gary’s attorneys have for years sought those documents as they try to prove that manufacturers are aware of the straw sales occurring at the Indiana retailers they supply. But the discovery process might never be completed, now that the Indiana legislature has passed a bill making the Gary lawsuit and any like it illegal.
