About 20-80% of women develop fibroids by the time they reach age 50.

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in the uterus. They can vary in size, from as small as a seed to as large as a grapefruit! These growths are made up of muscle and fibrous tissue and can cause symptoms like heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, frequent urination, and pressure in the abdomen. However, many women with fibroids may not experience any symptoms at all.

If you suspect you have uterine fibroids or are experiencing related symptoms, contact our caring team to schedule a consult with our specialists: 863.577.0316.

An Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) uses sound waves to create images of your artery in real-time to evaluate your arteries to see if they're normal, and if there's plaque. It defines the extent and type of plaque that may cause blockages and is useful in diagnosing and planning treatment. During coronary angiography, a catheter with an ultrasound probe is threaded into the artery to the area to be tested. The ultrasound catheter sends sound waves and receives echoes from the sound waves as they bounce back from the body’s tissues. These echoes are translated by a computer into images of the artery.

Aortic dissection is a life-threatening heart condition where the inside lining of the main artery (aorta) carries blood away from the heart and tears.

While the aortic wall rarely tears, if it does the blood flow can cause it to rupture and cause serious internal bleeding. Risk factors include high blood pressure, existing aortic aneurysm, and trauma to the chest.

The vascular specialists at Lakeland Vascular can evaluate the health of the arteries and diagnose any dissection. https://www.lakelandvascular.com/services/vascular-disease/

NBC News (2/12, Carroll) reports “people who lower the amount of salt in their diets by using a salt substitute may significantly decrease the risk of developing high blood pressure, a study”. The study “found that cutting salt back by more than a third by swapping in another mineral supplement – salty-tasting potassium chloride – along with other flavorings, such as mushroom, seaweed and lemon, was protective against high blood pressure over a two-year period.” The findings were published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Once you and your care team decide on a treatment for Peripheral Artery Disease, you may be wondering what the recovery process looks like.

How long will I need to recover?
How soon can I get back to normal activities?

If you and your care team opt for a minimally invasive procedure, your downtime will be considerably shorter than open surgery, and post-procedure follow-up usually happens within a few weeks.

Consider reaching out to our vascular specialists to discuss your options: 863-577-0316

The Get A Pulse on PAD patient education campaign empowers people by encouraging them to take an active role in the Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) treatment decision-making process.

It starts with choosing the right treatment for you. PAD treatment is not one-size-fits-all, and depends on the severity and symptoms. For mild symptoms, simple lifestyle changes like quitting to***co and increasing exercise can help. More severe cases may require a vascular procedure.

The team at Lakeland Vascular Institute offers minimally invasive treatments that restore blood flow and reduce recovery time. https://www.lakelandvascular.com/PAD/

Your doctor may recommend abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair to treat an aneurysm - a bulging, weak spot in the aorta that may be at risk for rupturing.

Lakeland Vascular Institute offers two options for aneurysm repair: endovascular grafting with stent placement and traditional open surgical repair. Open repair requires an incision to be made in the abdomen for the doctor to access the aneurysm for repair. An endovascular grafting with stent placement is a tube composed of fabric supported by a metal mesh called a stent. It is placed via a catheter that is guided through the veins to the place of repair.

Cancer may spread from any part of the body to the liver, where the cancer cells may grow for months or years before they are detected. Surgical removal of liver tumors offers the best chance for a cure but liver tumors are often inoperable because the tumor may be too large, or may have grown into major blood vessels.

Embolization offers another solution. It cuts off the blood supply feeding the tumor, allowing it to shrink and go away.

The main symptom of pelvic congestion syndrome is pelvic pain that lasts at least 6 months. This pain often first starts during or after a pregnancy. It may worsen after a later pregnancy. Common symptoms are pain before or during periods, feeling a sudden need to urinate, and enlarged and distorted veins on the buttocks, external ge****ls, or thighs.

Ovarian Vein Embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that seals off the faulty veins and reduces symptoms. If you've noticed enlarged veins in the pelvic area, contact Lakeland Vascular Institute: https://www.lakelandvascular.com/services/uterine-fibroids-pelvic-congestion/

1 in 20 people over 50 years of age experience Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), but over 70% of Americans haven't ever heard of this condition. PAD is caused by a buildup of cholesterol and scar tissue on the walls of the artery, known as ""plaque"". This plaque builds up over time and restricts blood flow.

If you are over the age of 50, are a current or former smoker, or have a family history of PAD, learn more about PAD with this informational brochure provided by the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions: https://www.secondscount.org/get-a-pulse-pad

Pelvic pain is a symptom of Pelvic Congestion Syndrome.
Many people realize they have Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS) when they experience chronic pelvic pain. PCS is the result of enlarged veins within the pelvis. The valves within the veins become weak and do not close properly, causing the blood to flow backward into the vein. This results in pressure or pain in the vein. Lakeland Vascular Institute offers a treatment for PCS called Ovarian Vein Embolization. If you think you might have PCS, please visit our website to schedule a consultation.

LVI is a subsidiary of Radiology and Imaging Specialists, a local community-based radiology group in Lakeland. By working together, we provide a multi-disciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of our patients. Our accredited facilities are staffed with experienced and dedicated radiologists. These doctors are available 24-hours a day to provide interventional radiology services, give quick and precise film interpretations and also to answer any questions from our patients or referring physicians.
