I don't know about you, but when I think of the 4th of July, I think of barbeque and WATERMELON! 🍉 On a hot day, it is so refreshing.

Far more than just a delicious summer fruit, watermelon is highly regarded in Chinese medicine for its hydrating and cooling properties. In the Chinese medicine theory of the 5 Phases (5 Elements), Summer is the time of Fire and the organ system associated with it is the Heart. As you can see from the 2nd slide, watermelon benefits the heart and clears heat, making it a delicious treat perfectly suited for this time of year. Enjoy this juicy treat and appreciate the array of health benefits it brings each time you indulge!

👀Check out the Watermelon Gazpacho recipe included on the 4th slide and let us know how it turned out.

Lemon is not just a citrus fruit that adds a tangy zest to your dishes; it’s also used medicinally in Chinese medicine. Lemon is esteemed for its detoxifying and invigorating qualities, aiding digestion and refreshing the spirit. Its ability to harmonize the stomach and clear heat makes it a powerful ingredient for maintaining balance and vitality. Next time you enjoy the bright flavor of lemon, ponder the rejuvenating effects it’s imparting on your health.

Since everybody likes recipe suggestions, I've included one below for Honey Lemon Ginger Tea. It's a soothing tea great for aiding digestion and boosting immunity. This drink harnesses lemon's vitamin C, ginger's anti-inflammatory properties, and honey's antibacterial benefits.

Ingredients:
- 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon honey
- Juice of 1 lemon
Preparation:
1. Boil 2 cups of water and add the sliced ginger.
2. Steep for about 10 minutes.
3. Strain into a mug, add lemon juice, and stir in honey until dissolved.

Acupuncture is known for being good at relieving pain. But in the 20+ years I've been doing acupuncture, I've also seen how lifestyle choices impact our bodies. Poor food choices, food sensitivities, lack of physical activity, stress, poor sleep, and lack of adequate hydration often contribute to pain in a big way. Acupuncture is only one part; if you keep doing those things that aggravate your pain, the pain will keep coming back. It's not easy and nobody is perfect, but try reflecting on something, even a little thing, you can do to have a healthier lifestyle. You might be surprised how big the results are!

Barley isn’t just any ordinary grain; it’s a powerhouse in Chinese medicine. Barley, with its cooling and nourishing qualities, is perfect for promoting digestion and eliminating dampness from the body. It’s a staple for those looking to maintain balance and wellness. Western dietetics also recognizes it health benefits for digestive health, immune health, and lowering cholesterol and blood sugar. Barley is a great source of fiber, magnesium, iron, and vitamin B6. It does contain gluten, so those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivities should avoid it. However, if you don't have any sensitivities to barley, try incorporating it into your diet for it's many benefits. I've included a photo with simple directions for barley water. It is excellent for hydrating and can be helpful for urinary tract health

Turmeric isn’t just a vibrant spice that adds color and flavor to dishes; it’s a potent ally in Chinese medicine. As an acupuncturist, I understand the powerful influence our diet has on our well-being. Turmeric is renowned for its anti-inflammatory and cleansing properties, making it invaluable for promoting circulation and purifying the blood. Incorporating turmeric into your diet means not just enjoying its warm, earthy taste, but also tapping into its deep healing benefits. Next time you sprinkle some turmeric, reflect on the healthful impact it’s making on your body.

Sharing a recipe from the Ayurvedic tradition, I've posted a recipe for Golden Milk, also called haldi doodh (the 2nd picture).

Discover the vibrant benefits of Lime! More than just a zesty addition to beverages and dishes, lime holds a special place in culinary and medicinal practices around the world. As an acupuncturist, I recognize food as a powerful agent for health and wellness, capable of either enhancing or disrupting our bodily functions. Limes are celebrated for their detoxifying properties and their ability to boost digestive health. They are also rich in vitamin C, which supports immune function and skin health. Whether squeezed over a meal or mixed into a refreshing drink, lime brings a burst of flavor along with numerous health benefits! Check out the directions for Cilantro Lime Rice in the 4th picture.
