Yesterday joined and other community members at the City of Richmond’s. annual Back-to-School Bash held at Irvine-McDowell Park. We got to speak with students and parents about our Office’s mission and provided information on keeping kids safe on the Internet, social media and online gaming. Everyone also got an opportunity to play Federal Fortune and answer trivia questions about the . This event was a great way to start off the 2024–2025 school year!
The Community Relations team joined the London Police Department, KY, Laurel County Sheriff's Office, and other law enforcement partners for at their community event to connect with the community, our neighbors, and law enforcement. We are so incredibly thankful for our law enforcement and community partners who continue to show us how strong our communities are when we are united and work together
Last Thursday, U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Kentucky staff had the opportunity to volunteer at God's Pantry Food Bank, one of our community partners in Lexington, to assist in sorting food donations and packing boxes of food to help feed Kentucky communities.

The has an on-going investigation regarding conditions of confinement for kids living in the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice’s eight youth detention centers and the Adair Youth Development Center. Our team is hosting a virtual community meeting on Monday, July 8 at 7 PM ET, in order to provide an overview of our investigation, answer questions community and family members may have, and share information about how to contact our team. On Wednesday, U.S. Attorney Shier and the community relations team attended Winburn Public Safety Day with our law enforcement and community partners in Lexington. We introduced our new, interactive game, “Federal Fortune” which is a fun way to engage with our fellow community members and spread some knowledge about our Office and the Eastern District of Kentucky! Thank you to the Winburn community and the Community Action Center for hosting a very fun and successful event!

This event focuses on education from our federal, state, and local law enforcement and community partners, to ultimately inform and empower Kentuckians to spot and stop scams. On Wednesday, U.S. Attorney Shier and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kate Dieruf, along with Special Agent in Charge Michael Stansbury, and Special Agent Chelsea Holliday, participated in a media engagement to discuss the impact of elder fraud, including investigation and prosecution. During the event, the media was able to learn more about trends in elder fraud and ways that we can all work together to help prevent it

Over the next couple of months, they will have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in working on challenging projects and cases principally involving issues in federal criminal and civil law. During National Police Week, we pay tribute to law-enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. In honor of the 2024 National Crime Victims' Rights Week, U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Kentucky, along with the Fayette County Commonwealth's Attorney, Fayette County Attorney's Office, Lexington Police Department, the Office of the Fayette County Sheriff,Fayette County Sheriff's Office, KY, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons- Federal Medical Center commemorated 2024’s National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) (April 22-26, 2024) at the Lexington Crime Victims’ Rights Luncheon- launching the weeklong honoring of crime victims and their support systems.

U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Kentucky was honored to have Claudia Love Mair, the Coordinator of the Kentucky Black Writers Collaborative at the Carnegie Center for Literacy & Learning, speak to our Office about Black Americans in literature and the arts. In addition to her role at the Carnegie Center, she is a published fiction writer, memoirist, and activist. Ms. Mair was a speaker as part of our 35th Annual African-American History Celebration, coordinated by our Black History Month Planning Committee.
