on August 18, 1991, an attempt to overthrow Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev and his leadership began. The attempted coup ended on August 21 after massive street protests and several deaths.

The Coup That Killed The U.S.S.R. In August 1991, a group of Soviet hard-liners locked Mikhail Gorbachev up in his Crimean dacha and tried to keep the U.S.S.R. together by force. Facing massive protests, they gave up just three days after taking power, when the first civilian blood was spilled in Moscow.

Кино - Перемен 08/16/2023

On this date 36 years ago Виктор Цой, singer, lyricist, co-founder of the band Кино, died in a car accident at the age of 28. If you don’t know his music, google Цой/Tsoi and Кино and you can find most if not all of it. His song Перeмен [we’re waiting for] Changes] became an anthem for perestroika but also was sung during the protests of 2011 when Putin announced he was going to run once again for president after Medvedev, his 2nd in comman (think of Pence) served a 4-year term. Everyone who went to those protests knew the words. Tsoi also sings this song at the end of the film Асса [Assa] but in this video he’s singing in concert. Quite a presence. The chorus is below:
Перемен – требуют наши сердца [our hearts demand changes]
Перемен – требуют наши глаза [our eyes demand change]
в нашем смехе и наших слезах и пульсации вен [in our laughter and tears and the beat of our veins]
перемен – мы ждём перемен! [change – we’re waiting for change!]
(forgive my pedestrian translation)

Russian Flagship @UCLA

The UCLA Russian Flagship program is part of the national Language Flagship, a groundbreaking national initiative designed to enable American undergraduates to become global professionals and world leaders in their chosen fields.

UCLA is one of four universities in the United States that offers a Russian Flagship program. The other three institutions are Bryn Mawr College, Portland State University, and the University of Wisconsin, Madison. These programs work in partnership with American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS, which runs the overseas programs.

With a network of federally funded programs in Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, and other strategic languages, the Language Flagship facilitates students’ development of bilingual and bicultural competencies through a combination of domestic and overseas programs. This includes not only accelerated and specialized language learning, but also experiences such as professionally oriented internships and direct enrollment in local university courses, which fully immerse students in the target language culture.
