Today is Debunking Day! Oklahoma Injury Care is celebrating by sharing the truth about some common myths about car accidents and injuries.

Myth #1 – All car accident injuries are visible. While bruises, cuts, and scrapes are common after a collision, many injuries are invisible to the eye, like whiplash, concussions, and even broken bones.

Myth #2 – If your car wasn't damaged, then your body can't be either. Modern cars are manufactured so well that they often sustain little more than some scratches and dents, even after a serious collision. Swerving and starting or stopping suddenly can jerk the body around and cause injuries such as whiplash, even if your car doesn't look damaged.

Myth #3 – If you don't feel pain immediately after a collision, then you haven't been injured. It's very normal to feel physically fine after a car accident because of the stress and adrenaline. But after a few days or even weeks, your injuries can become more obvious as the pain sets in. It's important to see a medical professional as soon as possible after a collision so all of your injuries can be documented and monitored.

If you've been in a motor vehicle collision, come see us at Oklahoma Injury Care so we can help you get the treatment you need!

Did you know that Oklahoma Injury Care doesn't just treat injuries sustained in motor vehicle collisions? We also provide care for patients injured in slip & fall incidents, like slipping on a puddle of water in a store or restaurant or tripping over a broken step in a public establishment. We can take x-rays of your injured body parts right here in the office, provide a variety of therapeutic modalities to treat your injuries, and refer you for advanced imaging like MRIs and evaluations with specialists if needed.

If you've been injured in a slip & fall incident, come see us at Oklahoma Injury Care so we can make your recovery our priority!

Today is Brain Injury Awareness Day. Many people involved in motor vehicle collisions experience a type of mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) known as a concussion. Even if you don't hit your head during a collision, the rapid movement and shaking of the brain inside the skull can result in bruising or tearing of brain tissue and blood vessels. Common symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nausea/vomiting, sensitivity to light or sound, blurry vision, ringing in the ears, difficulty concentrating, and trouble with short-term memory. Many of these mild TBIs resolve naturally over time, but sometimes symptoms can cause significant impairment to your daily life and may require additional treatment.

It's important to be seen by a medical professional as soon as possible after a motor vehicle collision so that your injuries and symptoms can be documented and monitored. If you or a loved one is struggling with these symptoms after a motor vehicle collision, come see us at Oklahoma Injury Care so we can help you get the treatment you need!

According to the Federal Highway Administration, 75% of weather-related car accidents occur on wet pavement and 47% happen during active rainfall. Here are some tips for staying safe on the roads in rainy weather:

1. Make sure your car is in good working order - check your headlights, taillights, turn signals, tire pressure, tire treads, and windshield wipers. Wipers should be replaced about every 12 months.
2. Turn on your headlights to increase visibility.
3. Give extra room to other vehicles to allow more braking distance.
4. Slow down - hydroplaning most often occurs when a vehicle is driving too fast in wet conditions. Decreasing your speed by 1/3 is a good rule of thumb.
5. Gentle steering, braking, and accelerating are best on wet roads.
6. Don't use your cruise control - it can interfere with your vehicle's ability to decelerate while hydroplaning, and it's better to keep that focus on the road.
7. Avoid standing water on roadways. If water is covering the markings on the road, it's too deep to drive through. Turn around and find another route.
8. Stay calm. If you start to hydroplane, avoid slamming on the brakes, gently ease off the gas, and keep steering in the direction you're going until you regain traction.
9. Pull over if you have to. If your windows become too foggy or the rain is too heavy to see, pull over to the side of the road until you have better visibility.

Be careful and stay safe out there!

Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day! Taking just a few moments of your time to do something kind for someone else is great for the community and will make you feel pretty good, too. Maybe you can pay for someone's drive-thru order or let someone ahead of you in line at the store. If you're buying groceries today, consider picking up a little bit extra to donate to your favorite local food pantry. There are all sorts of ways to make small differences in the lives of the people around us – what better day to start than today?

Tell us about something kind you did today!

February 1st is Car Insurance Day! It may not be the holiday most people associate with the month of February, but it is a great reminder to make sure you have the coverage you need and keep your documents up to date. The state of Oklahoma requires motorists carry a bodily injury minimum of $25,000 per person/$50,000 per accident and a property damage minimum of $25,000. It's also a great idea to include uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and MedPay in your policy to make sure you're taken care of in the event of a hit and run or a collision with a driver that isn't covered by insurance. Take a moment today to make sure you have the right insurance policy for your needs!

According to the National Safety Council, motorcycles make up 3% of all registered vehicles and 0.6% of all vehicle miles traveled in the USA, but in 2021 motorcyclists accounted for 14% of all traffic fatalities, 17% of all occupant fatalities, and 3% of all occupant injuries. It's important for drivers and motorcyclists alike to look out for each other and keep everyone safe on the road.

Drivers are more likely to notice the absence of a car than the presence of a motorcycle, so it's important to look twice at intersections and mind your blind spot. Increase your following distance if you see a motorcycle ahead of you and be vigilant when changing lanes.

Motorcyclists should wear full protective gear including boots, gloves, heavy clothing, and of course DOT certified helmets. Choose a light-colored helmet to make yourself more visible to other drivers.

Share the road safely and look out for each other!

January is Teen Driving Awareness Month. Motor vehicle collisions are the number one cause of preventable deaths for US teens. Here are some tips to discuss with your teen drivers to keep them safe:

1. Stay alert and aware of changing road conditions and other drivers on the road.
2. Keep 3 to 4 seconds of distance between your car and the car ahead of you.
3. Avoid using your cell phone, radio, or other electronic devices while driving. It's illegal to text and drive!
4. Buckle up!
5. Never assume you know what another driver is going to do or how they'll react to potential hazards on the road.
6. Create a Parent-Teen Driving Agreement. The CDC has one here: https://www.cdc.gov/parentsarethekey/agreement/index.html
