National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week
March 18 - 24, 2024
National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
Can using drugs or alcohol help me deal with anxiety and depression? The overall answer is no, unless a properly prescribed medication by your doctor is recommended.
Substance use in one’s mid-twenties, before the brain has fully developed, places young people at greater risk for substance use disorder and other mental health disorders. Teens and young adults use substances for a variety of reasons, including curiosity or peer pressure. Often, those who become habitual users are trying to “solve a problem.” They use substances to cope with stressors in their lives, feeling like they do not fit in, or feeling anxious, sad, or overwhelmed.
Developing healthy coping skills is a wonderful way to deal with those feelings. When negative feelings come up, it is always a clever idea to talk to a trusted adult about these feelings. Remember, negative feelings are temporary. Let us support each other in finding healthier ways to navigate life’s challenges, without the use of drugs or alcohol.
