In 1989, Volker K.H. Sonntag, MD, famously reattached Timothy Mathias' skull to his spine after the connecting ligaments were severed in a bicycle-truck accident. Dr. Sonntag, alongside Robert Spetzler, MD, also successfully drained a golf ball-sized blood clot at the top of his spinal column. No one had ever been known to survive such a combination of injuries before Timothy!

"Before surgery, my life was consumed by constant pain and limited mobility. Two years after surgery, I have my life back. I have ZERO pain. It was a complete miracle. I'm not sure another doctor could have removed the problem area with success. A few doctors before him refused to attempt my difficult case. I owe my newfound free life to Dr. Uribe!" - Nicole, Barrow grateful patient.

This August, we recognize the life-saving work of the neurosurgeons at Barrow Neurological Institute and highlight how philanthropic support empowers them to continue pushing boundaries in research, education, and patient care.

Charles Barrow, whose gift funded the opening of Barrow Neurological Institute once said, "Wealth has no meaning if it cannot be used to benefit others. Bricks and mortar alone will not make this Institute successful, but the people who work there will." In 1962, Barrow opened its doors as one of only three neuroscience institutes in the country. Thanks to the generosity of donors, Barrow is now a world leader in treating the most complicated brain & spine disorders.

The Barrow Women's Board's contributions go beyond funding groundbreaking research and neuroscience leaders. Patient care is another vital component of the mission of Barrow Neurological Institute, and the Women's Board funded the Memorial Waiting Room at the Institute for patients' families in 1985. To this day, the waiting room provides a space of respite for families during difficult times. A few of the fantastic women who sat on the board during this time are pictured here!
