No journey is without its pitfalls. As humans, it is very natural for us to make mistakes, especially when it comes to something so fickle as sobriety. Between the physical and mental aspects of the recovery process, it’s easy to fall into old habits and patterns that push us further away from our goals. Let’s take a look at some common mistakes people make on their journeys to sobriety and how we can take steps in avoiding them:

✨Thinking you can do it alone - It's common to think that sobriety is a journey best done alone, but you should be sure to lean on outside support systems like close friends & family.
✨Not treating a co-occurring disorder - Addiction is quite often pared with a mental health condition, which is equally as important in treating.
✨Having unrealistic expectations - Be sure not to hold yourself to standards that you won't be able to meet instantly. Recovery takes time.
✨ Comparing your journey to others - No two sobriety journeys look the same - it's going to be different for everybody.
✨Feeling ashamed of your struggles - Everybody struggles with something. You should never feel ashamed for it.
✨Returning to your pre-treatment lifestyle - Try to avoid the reintroduction of toxic relationships, friendships, and places after treatment.
✨ Thinking the journey ends after rehab - The path to recovery is a full one that transcends the detox and rehab process. You will always need to put in the work.

The good news is that you are completely capable of meeting all of your sobriety goals. Even if you do make a few mistakes, you need to be forgiving to yourself. This is not an easy path to take and just taking that first step is a feat in itself.
