Oregon Health Authority : Measles / Rubeola (vaccine-preventable) : Diseases A to Z : State of Oregon 08/12/2024

As of August 12, public health officials have confirmed 28 cases of measles in Clackamas, Marion and Multnomah counties, all among unvaccinated individuals. Case counts:

> Younger than 10 yrs of age: 12
> Ages 10 to 19: 11
> Ages 20 and older: 5

It’s the largest measles outbreak the state has seen since 2019.

Someone with measles can spread the virus up to four days before the tell-tale rash appears. According to state law, an unvaccinated person exposed to the virus must be excluded from school or child care during the period when they could become sick, which is usually for 21 days after exposure. Pediatricians urge parents and guardians to get their children vaccinated against the highly infectious virus before classes begin.

The Trauma-Informed Pediatric Practice [Paperback] | AAP 08/01/2024

Congratulations to Oregon Pediatric Society member RJ Gillespie, MD, MHPE, FAAP, and Oregon psychologist Amy King, PhD, for their book, The Trauma-Informed Pediatric Practice, published by the AAP and shipping as of August 1, 2024.

The book is designed to support caregivers, prepare organizations for change, and help child health providers create a trauma-responsive practice. A growing body of research shows that early relational health is the essential factor in building resilience in children to buffer the effects of trauma and adversity and prevent toxic stress from occurring.

PSA Child Safety Seats 07/24/2024

Oregon law requires children in cars to be in child safety seats until they weigh 40 pounds; infants must ride rear-facing until they reach two years of age. However, kids can be eight to twelve years old before they safely fit in adult seat belts.

This video public service announcement from the Portland Police Bureau and OHSU Doernbecher Hospital gives information about when children are ready to progress to the next stage of car seats, meeting current product standards, and keeping older kids safe.

For the first time, a U.S. Surgeon General has declared firearm violence a public health crisis. Gun violence is now the leading cause of death in the U.S. among kids and teens. Gun-related su***des have risen among all age groups since 2012; the greatest rise has been among 10–14-year-olds.

The AAP advises families who own guns to keep them locked and unloaded with ammunition locked separately.

"Pediatricians have long understood that gun violence is a public health threat to children and that its impact on families and communities can be devastating and long-lasting," said American Academy of Pediatrics President Ben Hoffman, MD, FAAP, in a statement.

Health care groups enter Oregon gun control case | The Lund Report 06/21/2024

The Oregon Pediatric Society is proud to join seven other healthcare professional associations in a legal brief supporting the implementation of Measure 114, which would reduce gun violence. The 2022 voter-approved initiative has been tied up in the courts. Fi****ms were the single leading cause of death among children and adolescents in 2021, more than car crashes, cancer, and other diseases. We all agree no child should ever be hurt by a gun. Measure 114 will keep kids safer from firearm homicide, su***de, and accidental shootings.

Gun Violence Prevention/safe firearm storage is one of the top advocacy issues for OPS members. We'll be wearing orange with OPS pediatrician and State Representative Lisa Reynolds, MD.

This Friday, June 7, is Wear Orange Day. This is a day when we honor those who have been harmed or killed by gun violence, and a day when we re-commit to reducing gun injuries and deaths. In the US, 43,000 people are killed by guns every year, and 76,000 are injured.

Wear Orange commemorates the birthday of Hadiya Pendelton, who was shot and killed in a park in Chicago, just a week after performing in President Obama’s inaugural parade (Jan 2013) in Washington, DC. Her friends started Wear Orange for her birthday in June, because orange is the color hunters wear to avoid being shot. My family is pictured here wearing orange in 2017.

There is a Portland event on Saturday for Wear Orange – a community gathering at PCC Southeast (2305 SE 82nd Ave, at 1 pm).

Please join me in wearing orange on Friday.
