Our History is in Our Art. Today we remember the impact and legacy of painter and sculptor, James W. Washington, Jr. Washington studied painting at the Northwest School in Seattle with artist Mark Tobey, who encouraged the spirituality in Washington's work. He turned to sculpture work and carving after discovering an engaging piece of stone in the street in Mexico where he met muralist Diego Rivera.

An important figure in the Seattle artistic community for decades, he was the subject of several major museum retrospectives at the Frye Art Museum, the Bellevue Arts Museum, and the Washington State History Museum.

In 1990 the City of Seattle's Historic Landmark and Preservation Board designated Washington's home and studio a cultural landmark.
