Do carrots really help you see in the dark? 11/30/2018

To save you a click: No, they don’t. Dark green, leafy vegetables are better!

Do carrots really help you see in the dark? There's a surprising source to this popular myth, which stretches all the way back to an attempt by the British Air Ministry to hoodwink the Germans in WWII.

Frequently asked Questions with Dr. Dave

Q: Do I need a specific magnification for Occupational Lenses?

A: Occupational lenses are calculated from your distance and near prescriptions. From a standard prescription any optician should be able to create a pair of occupational progressives for you. If you were to get glasses just for computer that were not progressives, generally speaking, that prescription will be your distance prescription plus half you near prescription. But this depends on how far you sit from your computer. If your computer is closer you may need slightly more power and if it's further you may need less power.

Frequently asked Questions with Dr. Dave

Q: Is dry eye curable? What are plugs? Will they cure my dry eye?

A: There is no "cure" for dry eye, but there are ways to treat it. Plugs work by blocking the outflow of tears through your tear duct. This allows the tears to stay in your eyes longer than normal and will reduce your dry eye symptoms. But it is not a cure. Sometimes the tears may still evaporate more quickly than they are produced despite the plugs and you will still have symptoms. This may depend on environmental factors as well (dry winter air, fan blowing in your face, etc).

There are two types of drops for dry eye: artificial tears and long term anti-inflammatories. The first category just replaces the tears you lose to the tear duct or evaporation. In the category of artificial tears there are two subcategories: lipid enhanced and non-lipid enhanced. The lipid enhanced have a bit of oil in them and they work best for combating evaporative dry eye. Naturally, your eyes produce oil for your tears to prevent the water part of your tears from evaporating, so replacing the oil later of your tears is important. If you don't wear contact lenses, these are the drops I recommend. If you do wear contact lenses, there are non-lipid enhanced artificial tears that do not have an oil emulsion. Sometimes the oils of the lipid enhanced tears can stick to the contact lens and cause cloudiness. Non-lipid enhanced artificial tears can be used to clear out the eyes of debris as well.

Currently on the market for long term ant-inflammatory drops for dry eye are Xiidra and Restasis. These are medicated drops that require a prescription and long term treatment. The exact mechanism between these two drops are slightly different but the general effect is the same. Both drops reduce inflammation in and around the eye to help produce more of your own quality tears. "Quality tears" is defined as tears having the correct proportion of oil, water and mucous. Oil helps prevent evaporation, water provides nourishment and mucous keeps the water attached to the eye. Inflammation will damage the cells that produce all three components of tears, therefore, reducing inflammation aids in the production of quality tears. These drops take a little while to work, two weeks in the case of Xiidra and one month with Restasis. However, these do not cure your dry eye because if you stop taking these medications the inflammation and consequently the dry eye will return.

Fish oil capsules can aid in the reduction of inflammation more generally and may help with dry eye but these medications reduce inflammation right in the eye and are generally more effective.
