In 2014 researchers did an interesting study about the role of communication in the treatment of chronic back pain. They compared electrical stimulation vs placebo/sham electrical stimulation and found a 25% reduction in pain. Then they compared electrical stimulation with Physical Therapists who actively engaged and communicated with the patients with those that just put the stimulation machine on them and left the room. Those that received an engaged Physical Therapist and electrical stimulation were the winners by reporting a 77% drop in their pain symptoms.

If you’ve gotten hurt during a yoga class, you’re not alone. A new study published last November in the Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine found that yoga injuries are on the rise, especially among older adults. Many know that practicing Yoga is a great way to gain flexibility, strength, but it also stimulates the circulatory, nervous, endocrine and immune systems, which is important this time of year and always.

Here are some tips to make your journey into this practice a safe one:
1) Start with a GENTLE/HATHA or BEG. IYENGAR class
2) Yoga is a practice, not a competition, so do the best you can with each pose and listen to your body
3) Set your intention to invigorate and be kind to your body during the practice

I Love the Eliptigo for all of my patients. It promotes the cardiovascular system as an aerobic exercise, and unlike biking it uses the Gluts more than the quads. Additionally, it provides a functional movement pattern, and prevents osteoporosis since it is a weight bearing activity. But most of all ....It Is FUN!!! Two things close to my heart are Breast Cancer Prevention and Yoga . Now we can speak of them in the same breath. A recent study has found that yoga benefits recovering breast cancer patients by reducing inflammation, combating post treatment fatigue and easing post surgical musculoskeletal tightness. I already knew this, but it is nice to see the scientific community embracing these findings too! NAMASTE
