Day #27: Marion Barry:
Marion Barry born in Mississippi became the first Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). He was also was involved in the Free DC movement which was a movement that gave DC residents the right to elect a 13 member city council and elect a mayor which before 1974 DC residents were only able to vote for school broad and President. Barry served as A Member of the DC State Board of Education then served as the first At Large Council Member for the first elected DC Council.
Barry served 4 terms as Mayor of DC giving him the nickname Mayor For Life during his years as mayor he grew the Black middle class and his administration was able to create many opportunities for the Black community.

Day #27: Denzel Washington
Denzel Washington is an American actor, director and producer. He has received a number of awards and has received critical acclaim for his film work and portrayals of real-life figures.

Per usual, we will be having our weekly meeting today at 5pm in the board of trustees room. Being the last Wednesday of , we wanted to do something a little special. Today we will be having a discussion about masculinity but here with us today will be Dr. Martin Pierre. He is a psychologist here at the Brandeis Counseling Center and formerly worked at the Massachusetts Psychological Association and Carney Hospital. Included below is a short video of him discussing some of the implicit bias that affect black men and how that can affect us. We hope you can join us for what is looking to be a great meeting.

Day #26: Marcus Garvey
A Jamaican-born political leader, Garvey was the first president of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League. He is the inspiration for the ideologies of black nationalism referred to as Garveyism. The economic and political policies in Garveyism include repatriation for the descendents of African slaves and empowerment of African Americans.

Day #25: Jesse Owens
Jesse Owens was an Olympic gold medalist in the 1936 Olympic Games for track and field, and is credited with singlehandedly destroying Hitler’s myth of A***n supremacy. A little known fact is that his name was actually JC [James Cleveland] Owens and that the name Jesse came when his family moved to Ohio from their native Alabama as a school teacher could not parse JC’s southern accent.

Day #24: W. E.B. Du Bois
The first African American to earn a doctorate degree from Harvard University, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was a renowned sociologist, Pan-Africanist, and public intellectual in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. His contributions include The Souls of Black Folk, Black Reconstruction in America, and The Crisis.

Day #23: Marvin Gaye
Marvin Gaye is a renowned singer, songwriter, and record producer. He, along with Stevie Wonder paved the way for many of today’s musicians by freeing himself of his record label, and allowing further proliferation of the Motown music scene. A posthumous winner of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement award, his contributions to the musical world have been etched in stone.

Day 22: Muhammad Ali
Muhammad Ali was an America professional boxer. In addition to being one of the greatest to ever pick up the gloves, he was an activist and philanthropist. Ali was known for his overwhelming self-confidence and his unapologetic demeanor. He was played by Will Smith in his 2001 biopic "Ali."

Day 21: 2pac
Tupac Amaru Shakur was an American rapper, poet and actor. Considered by many to be one of the greatest rappers of all times, he has a plethora of iconic songs that make him a household name such as "Dear Mama," "California Love," and "Keep Ya Head Up." He also starred in projects like "Poetic Justice" and "Juice."

Day #20: Bob Marley
Robert Nesta Marley was a Jamaican Singer-Songwriter who brought reggae music to the entire globe. He also shaped many perceptions of Rastafarianism and Jamaican culture with his social commentary, the spirituality of his music, and his life’s path that took him from Jamaica to America, then Europe, etc.
